FLOUR PU8CWISES LM1EE
IVIIKAT HAS SHARP ADVANCE
IX CHICAGO MARKET.
all of the so-called distressed flour has
been cleaned up for export and although
there was no evidence of foreign buying
of wheat today It Is expected that some
governmental orders are to be placed very
shortly.. In analyzing the prospective sit
uation, the possibility of a tremendous
flour demand for domestic consumption
should receive more consideration than
any other factor. We believe the buying
of wheat to fill these sales will soon as
sert Itself In the market.
Corn The market was a strong one
throughout the session with buying some
what more aggressive and hedging sales
readily absorbed. Receipts of 375 cars met
a good demand at advance of about one
half cent compared with the futures. With
hogs holding well above the $3 level, there
Is little incentive to sell corn.
Oats Trade was of moderate propor
tions, but the market was strong, with
sentiment Inclined to the constructive side.
The cash demand and spot basis were
fractionally higher. Shipping sales of
B0.04M) bushels were reported. We recom
mend Investment purchases at present
prices.
Rye Leading- elevator Interests were
conspicuous on the buying side and this
market gave a good account of Itself.
There was little doing in the cash de
partment, but No. 2 rye was firm at 5

Liberal Foreign Buying Reported
on Recent Break Coarse
Grains Also Firmer.
CHICAGO, Jan. 11. Wheat scored a
material advance in price today, helped by
gossip that foreigners were purchasing fu
ture aenveries ana that a large export
buslnes in flour was under way. Wheat
closed strong. lc to 2Vc net higher,
with May $1.10 to $1.10-J, and July
c to $1. Corn gained c to
-)c. oats He to c and provisions
10c to 1.1c.
Strength In wheat at first was based to
a considerable extent on the fact that no
confirmation had been obtained for yes
terday's reports that several French banks
were In trouble. Higher prices for wheat
and some broadening of the market was
also ascribed to talk that Germany had
taken 7.000.000 bushels of Argentine
wheat In the last two weeks and that
Japan had taken more than 1,000,000
bushels of Pacific coast wheat. Including
Canadian, on the recent break. Closing
prices were at the day's top level.
Corn and oats were 71rmer In sympathy
with wheat and as a result of continued
active buying of corn.
Provisions followed upturns In the value
of grain and hogs.
The Chicago grain letter received vester-
day by the Overbeck A Cooke company of
Portland follows:
Wheat Sellers of yesterday were the
best Duyers today and It was quite appar
ent that many in the trade who have
lately maintained bearish ideas were In
clined to alter their position because of
the change in the general tone of impor
tant news items. The bugaboo for the
past few days has been the bearish for
eign advices which we have persistently
claimed must sooner or later be sup
planted by domestic conditions. Judging
from the action of the market today and
the numerous mesages received telling at
a broadened flour demand, that time Is
now at hand. Minneapolis, Kansas City,
St. Louis and Interior points reported more
flour bulnesa being done than at any time
this sesson. The seaboard advised that '
