CLUB WOMEN FIR DIG 116 IN SCHOOLS Stand of Methodist Ministers and Laymen Opposed. EXPERT ON GIRLS SPEAKS Mrs. Baldwin Backs Vp Pastors by Declaring Temptation Put in Way of Youths. Prominent club women of the city, when interviewed yesterday, did not Rxe with the stand taken by Metho. dlit Bpiscopa.1 ministers and laymen Monday against dancing In public school buildings of Portland. Among those who said they believed that properly supervised dancing Is not an evil, were men and women who are active members of Portland Methodist churches. On the other hand a strong sup porter of the stand against dancing Is Jlrs. Lola G. Baldwin, head of the women's protective division. Mrs. Baldwin went to the Parent-Teacher . association officers and to the city superintendent of schools several months ago, urging them to prohibit dancing In the schools. She had nt connection with the resolutions de nouncing dancing, passed at the.meet ing ox tne roetnoatsts, but she ap proves the sentiments therein ex. pressed. Those Methodists who are not op posed to dancing In public schools are loath to speak for publication, but several inferred that the action taken .Monday did not meet with their en lire approval. They said they pre ferred "conKtructlve rather than de structlve criticism." Amtdfe Smith Not Opposed. I am not opposed to dancing In the auditoriums of public schools, provided the dances are given under the proper auspices and the young people are well protected." said Ame- clee M. Smith, a Methodist, who president of the Portland council of churches. "I recognize the fact that the church does not approve of danc lng, but I think In a case of this kind It Is better to have the dances prop erly supervised than to let them run wild " "I stand behind my organization," said Mrs. J. K Hill, a prominent church woman, who is president of the state Parent-Teacher association. "I think the women are trying to do a constructive work In providing wholesome amusement for the young people. Good chaperonage-wlll remove the menace of dancing, to a great ex tent. . Because of proper supervision' of dances in public schools, I feel that they are among the most whole some to be found anywhere. The ob ject of the Parent-Teacher associa tions In sponsoring these dances was to see that the young boys and girls had supervised amusement, where the parents and children could be to gether. "1 do not dance myself and I do not know that any good comes from danc ing, but I think the Parent-Teacher women have made an earnest effort to provide clean, wholesome amuse ment for their children." . Kvll Seen From Dance. " Mrs. Baldwin said that she thought the schools should be kept free from dancing. 'We are not criticising the dances held In the public schools," said Mrs. Baldwin. "I speak as an expert on girls Girls are learning to dance earlier than ever before. TUey learn to dance first, perhaps, In the public schools. Cater, we find these girls on the outside. "I believe that the schools should be kept free from dancing. I think there there should be nothing In the schools which any parents can criticise. We should hold our schools for other forms of recreation. "Dancing In the schools tends to break down the morale of some homes. Parents who do not wish their children to dance are In an em barrassing position. The dances aret held in the school buildings and the parents find it hard to keep their children from going to such affairs. Ideals Got From Schools. "Children get their Ideals from the school and so the parents find It dif ficult to forbid their children taking part in school activities. "I do hot wish to Interfere with parents in any way, and I do nbt wish to be prudish, but I do think that dances should not be permitted in the public schools." Mrs. Baldwin said that young people Indulge today in "dance shopping," going about from one dance to an other in an even'ng. She said that, although they may start at dances where there is proper supervision, that they may end the evening at a public dance hall. Mrs. Norman Christie, executive sec retary of the Toung Women's Chris tian association, speaking as an indi vidual and not for the organization she represents, said that she was in favor of dances in public schools, if they were properly supervised. f Mrs. Bathgate Upheld. Although the school law forbids dancing in "schoolrooms," an opinion of the attorney-general of the state, under date of July 10, 1916, reads: "The school law forbids dancing in schoolrooms used for regular class purposes, but not in gymnasiums or Dther rooms bull especially for re creation." Members of the executive council of the Parent-Teacher association stand behind their president, Mrs. W. H. ilathgate. In upholding the dances in schools, which have been conducted under the auspices of the parents. The viewpoint of the Methodist Episcopal church on dancing Is clearly given in the paragraph on "amuse ments" of the "Discipline of the Meth odist Episcopal church." "We lift up a solemn note of warn ing and entreaty, particularly against tlfeater-going, dancing and such games of chance as are frequently associated with gambling; all of which have been found to be antagonistic to vital piety, promotive -of worldliness, and especially pernicious to youth," says the Discipline. "We adjure our peo ple to remember that often the ques tion for a Christian must be, not whether a certain course of action is positively immoral, but whether It will dull the spiritual life and be an unwise example. We affectionately advise and beseech every member of the church absolutely to avoid 'the taking such diversions as cannot be used in the name of the Lord Jesus." r it 5 5 i llomc-Mado Goods Exhibited.
