Trakkio Ci.ub Elects. The first
snnual election and banquet of the
Portland Industrial Traffic club was
held at the Seward hotel Thursday
right. Officers chosen were: W. H.
Sainsbury, president; F. O. Donald
son. vlct-prcKldent; P. P. Kinsinger,
secretary; A. Baker, treasurer,
and J. l-i. McConnell. VV. O. Rogers,
Ji. C. Long, P. L. Miller and T.
H. Spencer, directors. Matters per
taining to transportation and for
eign trade were discussed. The club
was organized in May of last year
and now has traffic managers of
about 40 of the largest manufacturing
and Industrial concerns of the city in
its membership.
- Garaob Permit Granted. By unani
mous vote the city council yester
day granted the application of the A.'
H. Kerr company to erect a two-story
garage building on Fourteenth strtiet
between Washington and - Alder
streets. Members of the council had
opposed the application, but after E.
H. Mac.N'augliton of Strang A Mac
Xaughton, estate managers, had pre
sented plans which showed that the
tulldlng was to be finished with
pressed brick and have large store
window fronts opposition was with
drawn. Narcotics Civic League Topic. At
the regular luncheon at 12:30 P. M.
today of the Oregon Civic league there
wllL be discussion of the narcotics
problem. ' Thu Serious Menace" will
the tho topic discussed by Lester W.
Humphreys, United Slates district at
torney, while Dr. George Parrlsh, city
health offirer, will speak on "A, Pro
posed Remedy." The talks will be fol
lowed by general discussion. The
luncheon w ill be at' the Benson hotel.
Inspector Gets Absence Leave
Raymond Gill, motor bus Inspector for
the city of Portland was yesterday
granted a four months' leave of
absence without pay. Mr. Gill has
been selected manager of the new
automobile stage terminal, and has
accepted the position so . that he
might gain experience that will aid
him when he returns to his city posi
tion. The motor bus Inspector will
take over his new work next Monday.
Zebhuvtii Estate JJ1.SU0. An estate
worth J24.500 was left by IS. Zee
Luyth, whose death occurred Decem
ber 'lb, according to the petition for
probate of will filed yesterday In the
fircuit court by a son. Charles B.
Zeebuyth of 1973 Kast Glisan street.

Leroy Zeebuyth of Yakima, Wash.;
.Mrs. Electa M. Locke of Quinault,
Wash., and Mrs. Lois L. Anderson of

Juvenile Store to Move John M.
Thompson, who has been manager of
the Juvenile store, at 143 Sixth street,
for nine years, has closed a five-year
lease on a larger storeroom located at
391 Washington street. The amount
involved Is in excess of 925,000. Mr.
Thompson is remodeling the Interior
and expects to be open for business
this week.
Resolutions Honor Commander.
Resolutions In "memory William A.
Ketcham, past commander In 1 chief
who died at Indianapolis, Ind., on De
cember 27, have been adopted by
George Wright Post No. 1 in Port
land. The post took action providing
for the draping of Us colors for 30
days.
Poreion Commerce Club to Meet.
The annual meeting of the foreign
commerce club wilt be held Wednes
day noon, January 18, at a luncheon
to be held in the Portland Chamber
of Commerce. Nine directors to serve
the coming year are to be elected.
Activities of the club for the year
will be discussed.
Stanton Hearing Continued. The
hearing given by Mayor fiaker to
Harry Stanton, patrolman, accused of
having used intoxicating liquors while
on duty, began yesterday, but was
continued to next Monday afternoon
at 2 o'clock. The myor desired to
hear some witnesses in the case who
could not appear until Monday.
Druo Evil to Ba Discussed. The
fight against narcotics will come up
for discussion at the regular lunch
eon of the Civic league at the Ben
son hotel today at noon. Lester Hum
phreys, United States attorney, will
speak on "The Serious Menace," and
Dt. George Parrlsh, city health officer,
on "A Proposed Remedy." "
Rev. B. B. Sutcliffb to Preach.
Calvary Presbyterian church has made
arrangements with Rev. B. B. Sutcliffe
to conduct the services of the church
until further notice. Tomorrow morn
Ing he will speak on the subject, "The
Pre-eminence of Christ." In the after,
noon at 3:30 o'clock he will start a
series of Bible studies on the Epistle
to the Romans.
Japanese to Be Deported. Orders
for the deportation of Kitamura
Sousuke, Japanese narcotics vendor,
recently sentenced to 13 months in
McNeil's Island, ha've been received
by R. P. Bonham, Immigration Inspec.
tor. The Japanese will be deported as
soon as his sentence is served.

Memorial Directors to Confer.-
Another Joint meeting of the Roose
velt Memorial association and the
David Campbell Memorial association
will be held soon, or the purpose of
discussing the use of the triangular
strip of land ' at Nineteenth and
Washington streets. The latter as
soclation has prior right to the use
or this land, but the members of the
Roosevelt association are anxious to
acquire the site to place the Roose
Lvelt equestrian statue which Dr.
Henry Waldo Coe has given to the
city. The directors of the Campbell
Lassociatior. thus far have declined to
relinquish their hold upon the prop
erty, as they plan a memorial in
honor of David Campbell at this
point.
Call Pleases Dr. Villers. H. W.
Stone, chairman of the special com
mittee of the White Temple. (First
Baptist church) on pulpit supply, yes
terday afternoon received from Dr.
Thomas Jefferson Villers, pastor of
First Baptist church, Detroit, Mich., a
telegram, saying he had been "deep
ly moved" by his call to the Portland
church and that he would await com
plete details, which have been sent
by letter. Following the unanimous
call extended Dr. Viliers by the con
gregation of the White Temple. Thurs
day night, a telegram was sent to
him, merely stating this fact and say
ing details would follow by letter. In
the opinion of Mr. Stone, Dr. Villers
will accept.
Buildino to Bb Erected. A the
ater building and stores and offices
are to be Include In the building
plans for the triangular block at
Foster road and Sixty-fifth avenue,
Arleta, construction on which is to
begin the middle of this month. H.
W. Worth and Robert White are the
owners of this property. The Werth
holdings will he Improved with a two
story building with four stores on the
ground floor and offices and apart
ments above. It is to cost approxi
mately 112.000. The heater building
will be erected on the property of
Robert White, and the buildings now
on this property are to be torn down
at once.
Attembt to Bribe Charged Japa-
I nese officers and seamen on board the
steamer Keifuku Maru failed in an
attempt to bribe agents from the
office of George U. Piper, collector of
customs, Thursday night, Mr. Piper
said, and a large quantity of first
class Scotch whisky was seized and
now reposes In the vaults of the
customs-house After the officers had
conducted a"iong search they dis
covered the liquor. They were start
ing to take It off the ship, when, ac
cording to Mr, Piper, offers of bribes
were made. No arrests were made.
Federal g'rand Jury Faced.
George Teeters, ex-patrolman, and
Alex Legault are scheduled to appear
before the federal grand jury on
charges of violating the prohibition
law. The'y were arrested In their
'construction office" In the Exchange
building, Thursday- night, by agents
from the office of Dr. J. A. Llnville.

the officers raided the office. Teeters
and Legault were released on bail of
$."00 each.
City Club Meets. "Although a
slash of MS9.0OU was made in the
county budget. It was done on a sound
and scientific ba," said Robert G.
Diec.k, construing engineer of the tax
supervising and conservation com
mission, in a speech on the work of
the commission yesterday noon before
the City club. Mr. Dieck outlined the
action of the tax commission In
various details of the budget. He ex.
pressed the belief that the budget In
its present form would benefit the
county and win popular approval.
LenTs Improvement Club Planned.
Business and professional men . of
the Lents district are discussing tht1
formation of an Improvement ciub
and the possibility of establishing
permanent clubrooms In connection
with the work of such an organiza
tion for the general advancement of
public improvements. It is probable
a public meeting will be called soon
to discuss plans for the proposed or
ganization and for the general bet
terment of the community.
Japanese Sailors Sentenced. After
pleading guilty to a charge of im
porting narcotics Into the United
States, in violation of the federal
statutes, Yozaemon Hlrata and Zen
norsukl, Japanese sailors, were sen
tenced to nine months' each In the
county jail by Judge Bean In the fed
eral court yesterday. Dave Lightner,
Portland news dealer, who was in
dicted with the Japanese, will fight
his case In the courts.
Liquor Shipped by Parcel Post.
Ernest O. Hall of Newberg is now
facing a grand jury Investigation.
Hall was arrested Thursday at New
berg, after he had shipped bottles of
moonshine, packed in prunes, to
customers In Portland through the
parcel post. His bail has been set at
$1500. Thd penalty for shipping liquor
through the mails is two years In
prison and a fine of $.'000.
Foroer Sent to Jail. Arndld Stryf
feller, disabled Veteran of the war,
pleaded guilty to a charge of forgery
before Judge Bean In the federal
court yesterday and was sentenced
to three months In the county jail. He
was charged with having taken a
check made out to a comrade, in
dorsed It and attempted to cash it at
the Meier & Frank store.
Sandy to Open' Store. Sandy, well,
known Portland photographer, will
open a new store Monday morning at
152 Fourth street, near Morrison. The
new branch will occupy a floor space
of 14 by 24 feet, and will replace the
store at 329 Washington street, which
Sandy closed January 1. Sandy op
erates another store at 120 Broadway.
To Hood River and The Dalles by

Whisky Cached in Chair. Four
policemen, two of whom are ser
geants, ransacked the apartment of
Mrs. Emma Lumovlch, 228 ",4 East
Burnside street, from top to bottom
and from front to rear, but could not
f!nJ the liquor they knew was there
and t which they had come to find.
Finally they gave up. On the way
out one of the four accidentally felT
over a chair and upset It. jOut from
under the cushion rolled a bottle of
moonshirfe whisky. Mrs. Lumovlch
was then placed under arrest and
released on $250 bail. Tin police
men were Sergeants Shadd"and Bunn,
and Patrolmen Johnson and Rudolph.
Poolhall Men Fixed 200. The
proprietors of the Hie Hour poolhall,
145 Third street, were fined $200 In
municipal court yesterday afternoon
for vlolat'on of the prohibition law.
Several nights ago they were ar
rested when officers found ten bot
tles of liquor, cached in an ash can,
where. It was alleged? patrons of the
place could help themselves after pre
liminary arrangements for reimburse,
ment had been made.
