Commenting on the government acreago report, Logan & Bryan telegraphed to Overbeck & Cooke company, of this city: 'Considerable confusion exists as to the acreage figures in today's government re port. Yesterday's report gave the acreage last year at 4f, 700.000. This was the acre age actually harvested. Today's report, giving the acreage seeded this year Is, of course, compared with the acreage seeded lam year, or 44,870.000 acres, being the revised Mgures. The acreage abandoned last year, due to winter killing, etc., was slightly over 2.000. Qi)0 acres, which was unusually email, as the normal abandoned acreage is around 4. wnen tne trade anail7.es the report more carefully we believe they will realize that it Is a very bullish document." Resumption of the selling movement to establish income tax losses and weakness among specialties whose position has long been a matter of conjecture provoked considerable lrreg-u larity in today's stock market. Another adverse develooment of consid erable significance since It involved a local institution, was the suspension of the Ban ca Italtana dl Sconto of Home, which op erated numerous branches throughout Eu rope and South America. Other foreia-n contributions to the day'i budget of financial Incidents included the weekly renort of the Bank of England, showing a strengthening of liabilities, the French bank statement, wnich reponea la rite exDansfons In note circulation ana discounts and Berlin advices indicating another enormous increase in the Issue of DaDer marks. The money market Imposed no restraints upon constructive efforts. iall money opened at 3 per cent and held at that rate throughout the session, while time funds for the shorter dates were pientirui. Ralls were strengthened by the extra 5 per cent dividend on Delaware, Lacka wanna & Western and publication or nu merous November statements of earnings, some of which offered ground for en couragement. Among equipments, steels, oils motors and miscellaneous shares, the movement became more unsettled with the progress of the session. Pressure was most effective against General Motors, coppers and other metals and specialties such as Columbia Graphophone preferred. Sales amounted to 770. ooo shares. The Italian bank failure caused -a wharp decline In the local quotation for lire, but much of t he loan was recovered later. French and Belgian exchanges n-lso eased In sympathy, but sterling and Dutch bills were firm. Victory notes were strongest of the do meatic war Issues, liberties easing for the most part. Railroad bonds continued to strengthen, especially the various con vertible offerings. United Kingdom of 1 1 a I v 0'4 reacted to t h news of t he financial crisis in Rome. Purchases for Shipment to Russia May Xot Exceed l'lve Mil lion BuslieU. CHIICAGO. Dec 29. Assertion that a liberal amount of wheat would ba bought for Russian relief did a good deal today to atrengthen the wheat market. Closing prices, although unsettled, were Iirle net higher with May J1.17U to 1.17U and July 1 06H to ll.WHi. Corn finished c off to Sc up. oats Sti wo to 'c aavanco and provisions unchanged to l-c lower. I'oturns la the value of wheat were pre ceded by a bried display of weakne.ie.. due to bearish aspects of the government re port on the 1021 crop. Rallies, however, ensued owing to generally accepted opin ions that the governlment figures today on the 1022 crop would prove bullish. Iter a report was circulated that 1.1. ikki, 000 to 18.0ft0.00O bushels of wheat woul be acquired for Russia. It was at this Juncture that top prices ot tne nay weie reached, and denials mat moro man 5.000.000 buahels would be bought failed to cause much reaction in the final deal ing.-. The government report on winter wheat was received after the close and was construed by some authorities as bearish, because it showed a sitglitly bet ter condition than expected and a larger acreage. In tho corn market December delivery was under pressure from hedging sales, but May and July were strong m h result of Russian relief purchases and the re duction of the government crop estimate. Oats advanced In response mainly to the government report. Sharp declines in the hog market weak ened provisions. The Chicago grain letter received yes terday hy the Overbeck & Cooke company of Portland folkows: Wheat The government crop report of yesterday, showing 54.0HO.O00 bushels more wheat than previously estimated, was for gotten soon after the opening this morn ing. The report was bearish only In the sense that It showed a greater Increase than expected. Based on the accepted consumption figures and allowing for a minimum carryover, tho exportaoie sur plus for the remaining months of the crop veur Is not over 50.11110. llllO bushels. This certainly means a readjustment of sup plies. All cash markets were steady and receipts light, primary points having a total of only 345.0(10 bushels, against 557. 000 last year. The most potent factor in the situation at present is the evidence that receipts are going to average exceed ingly small for the remainder of the sca- n. Corn Persistent buying by prominent Interests took the surplus off the market early in the day and a strong tone ob tained for the remainder of the session. Receipts were small, estimated at 16(1 cars, and the local cash market was firm and higher. Country offerings to arrive in creased slightly on the advance. There Is ample room for a material upward price movement here and we believe It can eas ily be brought about by tne producer soil ing only when absolutely necessary. The demand promises to be good. Oats Buying by shipping interests Im parted strength to oats futures today. The news was without feature. Demand waa reported good. Rye Thero was little Interest In futures, hut the strength In wheat was easily re flected as there waa no pressure of conse quence on the market. Leading tutures rangea as ioiiows; WHEAT. Open. High. The ANSWER When the contract was let for pavement on the Morrison - street bridcre, he usual questions for dis cussion arose concerning specifi cations, etc. All these questions were answered in a sentence by the authorities, who said: "Sim ply make it like the pavement on Hawthorne bridsre." Incidentally, this answer served as a testi monial for Warrenite - BituHthlc, because the pavement on Haw thorne bridare was laid over five vears ano. and sustains more heavy traffic than any pavement in the city.
