THE MORNING OREGOXIAX, THURSDAY, DECEMBER 29, 1921 11 : NAMES OF GERMUIS Basement Clearance Sale Now in Progress Extraordinary Bargains iri All Departments BARRED BY COUNCIL Commissioners Flatly Rule Against Street Changes. PETITION IS THROWN OUT Keprcsentatives From Patriotic Organizations Not Required to Protest Restoration. A score or representatives of patriotic organizations. including Madame Fifl, the famed French dancer, had no opportunity to voice their protests against the effort to return names of German origin to streets in southeastern Portland. The council refused to make the change, and held that there was no good to be derived from arguing the ques tion. At the time the question, -which, in cidentally, aroused the ire of mem bers of many organizations, came up, a. delegation of American Legion representatives, acting as escort to Madame Fifl, was in the council ante room awaiting an opportunity to ap pear before the council. LrclonnaJrr Present In Body. Word came to them that the ques tion was up for consideration and the entire delegation. Including the masked dancer, flowed into the coun cil chambers. Charles B. Becker, representing the 6 petitioners seeking the change of street names, eald that the persons whose names were affixed to the petition had all shown the highest type of patriotism durirxc the war, many of them sending their sons into tattle for the United States. He pointed out that there had been 110 protest when the names were given to the streets at the time the district was platted, and he could not understand why there should be any particular objection to the return of the names. Old Name Mean Nothing. "What benefit would it be?" sought Mayor Baker. "Well, they were all right then, why not now?" retorted Mr. Becker. "There is nothing to be gained," aid the mayor. "The old names mean nothing, but the new ones do. To change these names back to those of German origin would be to keep the fires of hatred burning. We want to get away from that feeling. There isn't a man on this council who would vote for a change In the names, but just to show the sentiment on thisj subject, let some of the persons who have gathered here epeak on this petition for a moment." Several representatives of patriotic organizations rose to epeak, at the mayor's invitation. DIxcusMlon Is Cat Off. Before they could launch a discus slon of the petition, Commissioner Barbur held that the council did not want to make any change and that he couldn't see what good argument against changing the names would do. Commissioner Bigelow moved that the petition be denied. Commissioner Barbur seconded the motion and by unanimous vote of the council the motion was adopted. TRAVELERS PICK OFFICERS W. F.
