The demand for apples ha been the fea
ture of th local fruit market this week.
Buying was confined chiefly to ths better
trade and large sizes, where they were
to be had, and in their absence purchasers
took smaller fruit. The supply of large
apples, like Spltzenbergs and Ortleys, has
been much reduced and these are firmer
In prlcew Other trades are steady.
Apple trade authorities believe tiere Is
very food prospect of somewhat better

EASTERN DEMAND FOR WOOL BROAD
Speculative Buying by Dealers and Orders
From Mills.
BOSTON, Dec. 23. The Commercial
Bulletin tomorrow will say:
The demand for wool this week was of
fair proportions, due In part to specula
tion on the part of deaiers, but aiao in
considerable measure to piecing out orders
from the mills, which met the advanced
price reluctantly. Fine and medium
wools are very firm and tending upwards,
while low wools are somewhat higher.
Scoured low South American woola have
shown sn advance of perhaps 6 cents a
pound for the week.
The mill situation shows comparatively
little change, although rumorrjrora New
York state the good market is In slightly
better shape, which seems to be reflected
more or leas In the yarn market.
State and Municipal Bond Issues
Exceed Billion Dollars for First
1 1 Months of Tear.
A national surrey of trust company re
sources shows that the Pacific coast states
have the biggest gain in resources in a
ear for any section f the country. Ore
gon, Washington and California trust com
pany resources show a total of $857.31,301,
compared with $751,507,711 a year ago. At
the same time resources of all trust com
panies in the country fell off in the year
$l28,tH0,tKo. the figure recently given be
ing $12,323,430,000.
State and municipal financing through
the medium of bond issues had exceeded
$1.000,0(M.0O0 for the first eleven months
of this year.
Accompanying this tremendous activity
In public financing there has been an ex
traordinary advance in the market value
of state and city bonds, which has car
ried prices back to the level of 1110. The
Dally Bond Buyer of New York has pre
pared an index of, municipal bond values
indicating that bonds of twenty leading
cities which were selling at prices yielding
54 per cent when the rige started last
July were recently commanding prices
yielding only 4H per cent.
This means that a 5 per cent bond, with
twenty years to run, has appreciated 10
points (n five months. More than one-half
of this advance has taken place in the
last month.
The following table compiled by the
Daily Bond Buyer shows the saks of
rhe long-term state and municipal bonds
In November and the eleven months' pe
riod ending November 30 for the last ten

The president of a Philadelphia bank re
cently gave vent to the following lay ser
mon on laxness of morality in business
shown through the number of cancellations
of orders:
"I never knew business morality to be
so low. Of my personal knowledge orders
have been canceled where the raw ma-,
terlal and the manufacturing costs rep
resented from $10i,000 to $0rt).0O0.
"I think I am a good Christian. At
least I try to be one 1 am a churchman.
Therefore my criticism may be excused
when 1 say the churches, representing the
greatest organization on earth for spread
ing the doctrine of righ teousnea honesty
and decency, are aot functioing as they
should.
"Here In Philadelphia you have an Illus
tration. We have had no end of agitation
over the fact that boys played ball In
the park on Sunday. We have had none
over the cancellation of contracts or the
tremendous Increase In crime. To me play
ing ball In the park on Sunday Is so small
an offense compared with open crime, of
which we hear so much and disregard of
moral obligation, as In the case of orders
placed, thit the churches-may be said to
be using their great guns to shoot files
while Ignoring big game.
"The cancellation of contracts Is a far
greater evil than many persons appreciate.
It Is a national menace today. Through
cancellations many worthy men and firms
have been left to face very heavy losses,'
or, possibly, bankruptcy. It has under
mined conflcnce as has no other thing.
"It has to be stopped. The moral wrong
must be made clear, even if the legal
wrong is not. In this the churches can
do a great work. The man who cancels
contracts week days and goes to church
Sundays is more of an offender many times
ever, in my estimation, than the boy who
works week dais and piays in the park
on Sunday.
"We rose to a great moral height In the
period of the war. If that spirit of ex
alted service for mankind had been caught
up at the close of the war by the church
and translated into a higher moral stand
ard. It would have been of tremendous
value to the nation ana the world today.
To my mind the greatest loss we suffered
through the war was in the failure to
make that emotion something real, some
thing that would lift, all people to a bet
ter plane of living, of thinking and of
action."

NEW YORK, Dec. 23. Apart from the
conflicting movements of a few specula

over Christmas were made at 5 per cent,
although the opening quotation was slight

The Impending holidays reduced attend

Business in foreign exchange was at low

of the north European countries were
lower, but Swiss francs again rose well

Mixed conditions attended the smaller

shade lower.
Definite assurances that buying of food
supplies for the Russians would begin
at once tended to make th. wheat market
strong, from the start, and at no time
were prices lower than yesterday's finish.
Besides the weather map showed no mois
ture where most needed in the winter crop
belt, although later In the day private
messages told of snow In parta of Kansas
where much benefit was expected to re
sult. Gossip was current also that the
domestic visible supply total on Mon
day might be expected to decrease, and
that milling demand was becoming better.
On the other hand, export sales proved
small and failed to bear out . assertions
early la the day that foreigners were after
wheat Toward the last, accordingly,
something of a resctlon took place and
there was evidence that numerous holders
were ready to realize at 11.17 or above.
Strength In prices for corn and oats
came chiefly from the signing of the Rus
sian relief bill. In addition, however, ex
port demand for corn was active, receipts
were light and rural offerings small.
Selling by packers counterbalanced In
the provision market the effect of upturns
In the value of grain and hogs. -
The Chicago grain letter received yester
day by the Overbeck ft Cooke company of
Portland follows:
Wheat Started strong on the higher
Liverpool cables and 'advanced further
when reports from Interior grain markets
again Indicated that a atrong domestic
situation Is developing. The upward
course of prices was checked only by scat
tered selling In the way of evening up con
tracts over the holidays. The lark of
export business reported by the seaboard
was no surprise, a It is not expected
there will be much foreign buying until
sfter the first of the year. The same la
true of the domestic flour trade. Some
interesting news was received from Min
neapolis, reporting strong bids there for
winter wheat with interior mills buying
ST'd local milling Interests beginning to
look to elevat.ir stocks for supplies.
Corn There was aggressive buying of
futures throughout the session and the
market had a strong tone. Receipts were
smsller than expcted and met a keen
demand at higher prices. Exporters were
again active buyers, and although only
l.tO.OOo bushels were reported out pf Chi
cago there was undoubtedly consirt.-mbie
more bitslneas being done. The boVi"g
pr'itr.miite for Ross'an relief should give 1
trit market added strength. i
