AMERICAN GRAIN NEEDED
ln Icr Purchases Expected to Be
Mutle In Southern Hemisphere.
Buying by Continent.
Slocks of wheat tn Europe, particularly
In tha United Kingdom, are limited and
buying tn considerable volume of North
American auppltea must be done before
much wheat can be ahipped from south of
lha equator. According to BroomhalPa
rable veaterdar. atocka of wheat In the
Liverpool district total only 1.004.000 bush
la, aa compared with about T.SOO.OOO bush
els at thla time last year. The cable fur
ther aald: "Purchases of wheat for for
ward movement have been only moderate,
but thla haa been offset by the lower Ar
gentine prices and the expectation of early
shipments of new-crop wheat from the
southern hemisphere. Demand for wheat
- Is generally quiet but the continent con
tinues to take orders csrgrocs."
The later crops In Australia, the cable
mU1. are ripening fast and harvesting of
wheat will be completted about the mid
die of January. Yields are uneven. Crop
prospects in Europe are reported as fol
lows:
Western and southern Europe Weather
continues mild and favorable.
France Sowing of new crop of grains
resumed under generally favorable weather
conditions at tho present time.
Austria This grower haa received a
a;ood fall of snow.
Balkans It Is confirmed that wheat
owlngs la the Balkans are very short this
year.
India The favorable crop outlook is
maintained.
Danube There has been a heavy bill
iard and frost. The Danube river Is frozen
over and many steamer have been raught
In the Ice.
Denrrmrk Danish crops suffered consid
erably from the severe drouth which pre
vailed over an extended period during the
summer months, and while late reports
would indicate that the belated arrival of
moisture has awlftcd some crops, says a
consular report, it also appears that It has
Inlured others during the harvesting.
Tiiken as a whole, however, an average
crop has been harvested. Rye Is slightly
below middling; wheat somewhat ahove.
The spring crops on the Islands show an
average yield, while on the mainland they
are considerably below average.
Belgium Wheat to the value of R13.
42!.0Sfl francs was Imported by Belgium
during the first nine months of 1021. an
Increase of 31 per cent over that Imported
during the same period of 1H20. In the
IWM period 3 per cent of this Import came
from the United States, compared with
only 20 per cent during the previous year.

STOCK AND BOND PItlCKS ItK
ACT AS CONSEQUENCE.
All Liberty Issues Sell Lower.
Foreign Exchange Rallies From
Lust Week's Setback.
NEW YORK. Dec. 20. Stock trading to
day lapsed Into the dullness which usually
marks the approach of the holidays. Spe
cial and secondary issues with little pub
lic . following were ilrm to strong, but
high-clasa Investment sharea moved within
contracted llmita.
Bonds were heavy, all liberty Issue, sell
ing down from 70 cents to about $1.25 per
$100. Minimum quotations represent re
actions of $3 to almost $4 from November
high records.
The money market probably accounted
In part for these uncertain tendencies. Call
loans opened at SH per cent, the highest
initial rate in several weeks, subsequently
advancing to 6 per cent. Time funds were
lees plentiful.
Foreign exchanges made further rallies
from last week's setback, a circumstance
attributed to latest advices on Germany's
reparations payment.
Junior steels and equipments, motor ac
cessories, fool specialties and utilities of
the gas and power divisions rose 1 to 2
half points. Ralls, oils, rubbers and to
baccos eaed almost to the Sams extent.
Sales were 5.1.1, 0OO shares.
More price reductions in raw sugar and
other foodstuffs and prespect of further
downward revision of schedules by inde
pendent steel producers were accepted aa
a logical result of backward conditions in
thee and kindred Industries.
Dealings in foreign remittances were
light, aside from the demand for British.
French and Dutch bills. Except in the
Danish rate, which forfeited part of yes
terday's substantial advance, all Euro
pean currencies, including Oerman marks,
showed a strong undertone.
Various Junior railway Issues In the
bond list were strong, but the general
trend was in keeping with tha reversal
sustained by the liberty group. The public
offering of Ortnii.li $30,000,000 bonds was
soon oversubicrihed. Total salea. par value,
aggregated $ tu. 2.10,000.

DUE TO TARIFF
Next Year's Clip Will Be Smaller, gays
Clileago Merchant.
When 1021 passes Into history It will
have marked a recovery of sales and
strengthening of values In the domestic
wool trade attributable solely to the en
actment of the emergency tariff, declared
Hubert Sllberman, wool merchant and ex
presldent of the Chicago Wool Trade asso
ciation, In an Interview.
The approach of 1922, he said, finds
the wool market In a firm position with
higher prices inevitable, barring unfore
seen contingencies such as a low tariff or
a general catastrophe.
"It will not be necessary for mills to
run over 7.1 per cent capacity In 1022 to
being about an advance In price." stated
Mr. Sllberman. "The supply of wools In
tills country hss been radically reduced
by the present year's consumption, and It

WHEAT LOWER AT CLOSE

MARKET SETBACK.

Forecast of Colder WeaUirr in Win

' Lasting Effect.
CHICAGO, Dec. 20. .Notwithstanding
that cold, wave predictions for the win
ter crop belt, together with lack og mois
ture In the outhwest gave considerable
strength to wheat today, profit taking
at the last led to declines. The close was
weak, quarter to e net lower, with
May $1.141.14 and July $1.03
103. Corn lost o and oats B c
to if? c. Provisions varied from un
changed figures to 5 cents lower.
With a forecast out for zero tempera
tures as far south as northern Kansas,
and with complaints current that portions
of Kansas and Oklahoma were excessively
dry, wheat averaged somewhat higher un
til the final half hour. Setbacks in Winni
peg quotations, however, and holiday cur
tailment of trading were an offset. The
finish was at the day's low point.
Corn and oats were easy In the ab
sence of any special demand. Prospective
colder weather was construed as bearish.
Action of the hog market governed
provisions.

being quite well balanced in spile of the
almost complete absence of export Interest.
It Is probable that there will be no big
foreign inquiry until after the holidays,
but there are Indications that Europe will
want more of our wheat before the crops
of tho southern hemisphere become avail
able. It begins to look as If the wheat
situation In Canada is on about a par with
that of the United States, the farmers of
both countries having rushed their wheat
to market so rapidly that reserves are at
an extremely low ebb, presaging a most
unusual state of affairs between now and
next July. The situation Is made all the
stronger by the fact that to date the do
mestic milling trade has been on a hand-
to-mouth basis.

agreement with the mate highway
comml-ssion and the Clackamas county

MOXTESANO, Wash., Dec. 20.
(Special.) Work on the Olympic
highway west of Montesano was com
pleted yesterday, and the road, closed
for a week on account of the high
water, is now open to traffic. The
decking of two small bridges had
floated away and it was necessary to
wait until the receding waters un
covered the piers before the repairs
could be made. Stages, which have
been making a 12-mile detour to Aber
deen, over the Wishkah and Wynooche
rcadi. are atraln running on time.
