WASHINGTON. D. C, rc. 1.
(Special.) Everybody is going home!
First several delegates to the confer
ence departed and now the literary
lions are leaving. Colonel Charles
Repington has gone; Lord Rlddell' Is
sailing next week. He is one of the
foremost writers attending the con
ference, you know, and anytttJfig he
says or does Is of particular Interest
because he Is so close to Lloyd
George; can get his attention proba
bly more quickly than the king of
England. He has been here as he
was at the Paris conference, the "go
between" fir the newspaper men and
the heads of the conference and other
notables. However, after suffering
a temporary eclipse, Washington
smart unofficial society Is coming
Into its own aualn.
Witness the several functions given
recently by Mr. and Mrs. Sylvanus
Stokes. Jr., and the large dinner
party given by Mr.i. Thomas F Walsh
for the vice-president and Mrs. Cool
Idge last Sunday and a number of
others of the same Bort with resi
dential society members as hosts and
hostesses.
Sundays Are t.ay.
Each Sunday seems to be a bit
gayer than the preceding one. Last
Sunday, for example, there was a big
dinner of Mrs. Walsh. The Belgian
ambassador and Baroness de Cartter
de Marchiennu gave a dinner when
their guests included a number of
officials and conference delegates.
Also Warren De Lanor Bobbins of the
state department and Mrs. Robbing
had guests for dinner to meet Count
and Countess Szecheny, the co-untess
was formerly Gladys Vanderhilt, you
know; Mis. John B. Henderson has
some delegates and others dining
with her; there were several dinners
and luncheons at the various clubs.
There was a bud presented almost
very day this week and one or two
days two were launched, and every
day there were teas and luncheons
and "bridges" for the debutantes;
several every day, In fact. Senator
and Mrs James W, Wadsworth, Jr.,
gave a dinner party Friday night far
their debutante daughter, "Evelyn.
Her mother was Alice Hay. daughter
of the late secretary of state.
Annual Dinner tilven.
Then Commander Theodore Jewell,
U. S. N., gave his eleventh annual
debutante dinner. The commander
gives such a party every winter,
though he himself is well beyond the
debutante age. On his invitations he
had the "11th annual dinner" when
Miss Elizabeth Zo'nay. daughter of i
the artist, George Julian Zolnay, was
presented. The bud and her mother
received in the drawing room and
were assisted by several women and
a bevy of buds, according to rules
and regulations.
However. Mr. Zolney received in the '
studio and had assisting him a group
of men who even poured the tea.
Quite a delightful Innovation. I
should say!
Miss Laura LeJune. daughter of the;
commandant of the marine corps, aad
Mrs. LeJune, was formally presented!
today at a tea dance at the Marine'
barracks, and was also the guest of:
honor at several parties for the lae?t '
seven days.
General Pershing, who Is enter-1
tnlned constantly doesn t do much en.
tertatning himself. However, he gave
three luncheons this week, one In I
honor of General the Earl 'of Cavan,
who is being much feled lately, one
"to compliment General llaz, who ar
rived Just along In time for the party,
which was on Wednesday. He sailed
for Italy yesterday. Then today the
general had another luncheon for
General Tanaka of the Japanese dele
gation, who gave a dinner Wednes
day for the general.
Cabinet U n Receive.
Ths women of the cabinet who have j
been so busy with the conference got I
down this reek to the business of
having their days at home, all of!
them in town receiving Wednesday
for the first time for several weeks.
Mrs. QoOlidge and Mrs. Gillette are
also back to regular schedule.
The Hardlngs had a dinner party
last Thursday night for BO when sev
eral governors of stateB and their
wives were among the guests. The
governors were passing tHrough
town when en route from the guber
natorial convention In South Carolina
Wednesday night the Hardlngs dined
with Senator and Mrs. Reed Smoot.
when Chief Justice and Mrs. Taft, the
attorney general, Harry M. Daugh
erty, and one or two others were
th-e; just a family party in a way.
Kirs. Harding, as usual, entertained
box parties at the several concerts of
the week, each time having with her
a particularly Interesting company of
women, most of them being wives of
delegates or diplomats. President
and Mrs. Harding had also their
usual weekly theater party, this time
entertaining In their box Representa
tive and Mrs. James R. Mann and the
director of the budget and Mrs.
Charles G. Dawes.
The Congressional club gave a
brilliant reception Friday, the first
party of the season. I reallv can't
remember all the large and Interest-i
ing parties of the week: society was
In a mad whirl; it was like a three-
ring circus.
