    PUREBREDS TO BE SOLD
CHEHALIS TO BE CENTER OF
GREAT ANNUAL- AUCTION.
Holstelns of Southwestern Area of
Washington Are Offered by
Well-Known Growers.
CHEHALIS. Wash., Dec. 7. (Spe
cial.) Stanley Butchart, secretary of
the Washington State Holsteln-Frle-slan
association, who la looking after
the final .arrangements for the sec-
ond annual Chehalls consignment sale I
of cattle to be held Friday at the ,
outhwest Washington fair grounds, .
stated today that unusual Interest la
manifested In the coming event.
Sixtv-flve animals are to be of
fered, the bulk of them females, there j
being but four males In the list 01
offerings. The most of the cattle are
young animals and the breeding rep
resents some of the best families of
Hoist, ins to be found in the entire
Pacific northwest. Fifteen head were
born in 1920, ten In 1919, six in 1918
and none of them in the near-aged
class. Many of the females are bred,
some of them just fresh recently, and
all-in-all the men who have the sale
In charge consider this an exception
ally fine offering. The personnel of
the sales committee, which includes
some of the most prominent men in
the state, and embraces such breed
ers as Alexander Todd, William Bish
op, Alfred Ghormley. J- I Smith, Ed
Hoen and Stanley Butchart, is suffi
cient to Insure the quality of the
offerings. When prospective buyers
are assured that a personal inspection
of every animal to be sold was made
by County Agent Fowler of Lewis
county, and Chris Hendricksen, one
of Lewis county's best-known and
most successful breeders, to determine
the quality and character of the cat
tle breeders wished to offer, end that
nothing will be offered that was not
approved by this local committee, the
man who want3 to buy Is doubly as
sured of good cattle in which to In
vest his money.
The cattle consigned to the sale
come from such well-known breed
ers as George W. Lawler of Tacoma,
Thomas Bowen of Snohomish, Charles
Bldrldge of Chimacum, Thomas McGee
of Chimacum, T. K. Tarr of Chima
cum, A. C. Mills of Curtis, Charles
Peterson of Chimacum, Hugh Nesbit
of Chimacum, William Eldrldge of
Chimacum, H. C. Davis of Granger
and Harry Hamilton of Forest. Many
of the animals are already in the
spacious dairy barn at the fair
grounds and are being inspected by
. prospective bidders.
Thursday evening preceding the
sale there will be a dinner in Chehalls
for the Holstein breeders. The sale
will open promptly at 10 o'clock Fri
day morning, with George A. Gue, the
well-known auctioneer, In charge. A
lunch will be served at noon. A fine
pavilion in the new dairy barn has
been arranged and every convenience
possible will be afforded those who
attend the sale which promises to be
the biggest event of Its kind ever held
in the state of Washington.

UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS AN
NOUNCES NEW INVENTION.
Plioio-EIcctrIc Cells to Be Csed In
General Impulses to Re
produce Human Voice.
t Tin ANA, TO, Dec 7. A discovery
which It "seems possible will make
the movies of the future talk." was
announced by the University of 111!
nois today. The basic patents of the
Invention are held by the Institution.
"The scientific discovery la that of
an extremely sensitive and reliable
photoelectric' Cell, made about two
years ago In the physical laboratory
of the university by Professor Jacob
Kuril." said the announcement.
"The photo-electric cell Is a device
for turning flashes of light Into elec
tric pulses, and is so sensitive that It
reacts to light from stars which can
not be seen with the naked eye. A
second film Is used on the same spin
dle as the moving picture film, on
which are photographed various
curves and openings corresponding to
the words which are "to accompany
the pictures. A beam of light sent
through this film falls upon the
photo-electric cell. It Is thus possi
ble to get variations in an electric
current by letting the beam of light
from a speech photograph film fall
upon such a cell. These variations
act In a telephone to reproduce
speech.
"Dr. Kunz' photo-electric cell in
transforming light waves into elec
tric pulses responds Immediately to a
light wave even after hours and days
of use," it was said.
The selenium cell was used with
some success by a Swedish scientist,
but Dr. Kunz' cell Is declared by the
university announcement to be1 far
more sensitive and promises to give
the perfect "photo-phone" of the fu
ture. LIONS' CLUB IS GROWING
