The list of vessels In Portland har bor engaged in foreign and non continuous coastwise traffic was raised from 19 to 23 as a result of arrival in the river yesterday of four big steamers in addition to smaller carriers. Some of the vessels ar riving yesterday will discharge cargo here and all take out substantial loads to the orinentlor Atlantic ports. Arrivals included the Amerftan steamer Lewis Luckenbach of the Luckenbach line, which Kot in from New York city, and the Japanese steamers Salkai Maru from Muroran, the Yaly-ou Maru from Raymond, Wash., and the Talkai Maru from Astoria. In addition to the offshore and non-continuous coastal .vessels, the coaster Sinaloa, a Norwegian ves- el, got in from Aberdeen, Wash. General Cargo Brought. The Louis Luckenbach brought in lome general cargo from the Atlan tic and will take out general. ne Is one of several steamers operating In the Atlantic-Pacific service for the Luckenbach company. The Japanese stmer Salkal Maru is one of the vessels of the Suzuki company, and will load wheat and lumber here for the orient. The Yaiyol Maru has been taking on lumber at Raymond. Wash., and came to Portland to complete her cargo. She docked at 4:30 yesterday afternoon after having been en route from Astoria since 7:30 Saturday night- She and other vessels re ported some trouble on the trip up on account of heavy fogs. A number of the steamers were delayed be cause of the Inability of pilots to get their bearings at times. Vessels to Go to Orient. The Yaiyol Maru is another vessel of the Suzuki fleet. She will also go from here to oriental porta The Talkai Maru. which is a mem ber of the fleet of the Yamashita company, had been taking on a part cargo of flour at Astoria. She came up to Portland harbor to take on some wheat, lumber and general nr.erchandlse to complete her. cargo. She will go from here to the orsent. The steamer Sinaloa is a vessel of the Latin American line and has been loading lumber at Aberdeen be fore coming here for some cargo. She will touch at sound ports before leaving south for Mexican and Cen tral American ports. MONDAY'S STOllM BAD OCT Skipper of Sir Thomas Llpton Tells of Bxperlences. MARSHFIELD, Or., Dec. 4. (Spe cial.) Captain Norman Granwell of the schooner Sir Thomas Llpton, brought into port today by the tug Fearless, said the storm the Upton outrode here was the worst lie had ever experienced. Captain Gran well brought the Llpton up to Coos Bay last Monday, just as the recent storm broke. He was blown north as far as the Columbia r rtr, and was nearly wrecked at Cascade Head. All on board the Llpton were Wall and Dr. Phil J. Kelzer, marine sur geon, gave them a clear bill of health. The Llpton will load white cedar for Yokohoma. KAYMOXD CARGOES LARGE (11,161,732 Feet of Lumber Sent out on 1 1 Vessels in November. RAYMOND, Wash., Dec 4. (Spe cial.) Lumber shipments from the port of Raymond totaled 11,161,732 feet and shingles aggregated 1,297,275 In November, according to a sum mary Just compiled. Eleven vessels cleared during the month. November marked the first direct shipments from this port to Japan. Charters have been arranged for Jan uary and February. The Willapa Lumber company proposes a schedule of bi-monthly sailings for New York beginning in January, if weather con ditions on the Atlantic coast permit. Harbor Channel Improved. HOCjUIAM, Wash. Dec. 4 (Spe cial.) At mean low tide there is a depth of 20 feet along the Inner chan nel of the harbor and 19 feet a,t Cow point, the port commission's property, said C. R. Wright, resident engineer, at the weekly luncheon of the Ho quiam Commercial club, Friday. The dredge has but rocently completed work at the Grays Harbor shoal, where for some time the water was less than 20 feet deep at low tide. This shoal has been removed. Frank H. Lamb, president of the commission, said the sum voted two years ago would be sufficient to meet the ex pense of dredging to a 28-foot depth. Pacific Coast Shipping Notes. SEATTLE, Wash, Dec. 4. (Special.) To stimulate shipments of exhibits to the Grand Industrial exhibition to be held at Tokio In 11(22 under the auspices of the Toklo prefecture, the Nippon Yusen Kalsha haa announced a reductlun of 20 per cent on all outward freight shipped as exhibits from Seattle to Japan. Furthermore, the company will make a reduction of 20 per cent In passenger rates for alt classes of exhibitors and officers concerned in the exhibition. Carrying 700.000 feet of lumber, the Jap anese steamship Mltsukl Maru. under char ter to Walker Ross, Inc.. sailed for Yoko hama and Kobe last night at 6 o'clock. The steamship Alameda of the Alaska Steamship company sailed for Alaskan ports last night at 0 o'clock. Early this morning the Admiral Good rich, coming from Vancouver, B. C, via Belllngham and Everett, arrived at this port. The Admiral line announces the pur chase of the steamship Callao to be placed In the coastwise service operating be tween Pugct sound and California ports on the run opposite the steamship Presi dent and replacing the steamship Gov ernor sunk last April. The Callao will be renamed Ruth Alexander, in honor of Mrs. a. F. Alexander, wife of President Alexander of the Pacific Steamship com pany. The purchase price of the Callao was 12.500.000. Bringing 250 first-class passengers and a cargo of copper ore and salt fish, the steamship Northwestern, Captain J. G. Nord, of the Alaska Steamship company, arrived this morning at 7:45 o'clock from southwestern add southeastern Alaska. She la expected to leave from this port December 24. The Royal Mail Steam Packet company's carrier Nebraska is due here today or to morrow to load 60.000 boxes of apples for European ports. At Vancouver, B. C. and Portland she will take about 90,000 boxes of apples, and her total apple cargo will amount to 140,000 boxes. According to announcement made today the Williams line steamship Willsolo, due here December 8, will load 300 tons of fir doors, 750 tons of copper, 1,000.000 feet of lumber and 30,000 cases of canned goods at Seattle and Tacoma for the Atlantic seaboard. Inward she la bringing 900 tona of east coast cargo. She will be fol lowed by the Wlllfaro. December 21. The Willfaro will be the last Williams line ship to come here this year. Laden with 6000 tons of cargo, loaded at Seattle and other Pugct sound ports, the Matson Navigation company's steam ship Manulani sailed for the Hawaiian Islands Saturday. Tue marine department of the chamber of commerce today started a new sys-tem in announcing wireless reports on the position of vessels at sea. Heretofore, the latest wireless reports were received for the position of the vessel 8 P. M. the previous night, livery night at the 4ame time such a report was received. The new system gives the position of the vessel at 6 A. M, on the day re ceived. The reports are received direct from the United States weather bu reau, and contain the exact position and the weather conditions of the vessel making the report. This sys tem will enable shippers and people interested in' certain vessels to get news ten hours earlier. Obituary. Lawrence B. Heitzman. EUGENE. Or., Dec. 4. (Special.) Lawrence B. Heitzman, for the last 30 years a resident of Lane county, hav ing lived on a farm six miles north west of Eugene most of that time. died there yesterday at the age of 84 years. Skipworth of the circuit court of this district has been desig nated by the chief Jurtice of the state supreme court to hear the Klamath county courthouse case at Klamath Falls, which will come up some time next week. This case has been in litigation for a number of years. It has been heard once by Judge J. W. Hamilton of Roseburg and once by Judge Calkins of Medford and has also been through the supreme court.
