Victory 4 Xotes Again Go to
Par Demand Extends to
Foreign Issues.
NEW YORK. Nov. 23. Most of the lib
erty bonds Issued by the United States
government to meet expenses of the war
mounted to new high- records for the year
on the stock exchange today, while victory
4i notes duplicated their recent record
of par for odd lota Transactions' In these
Issues approximated $10,000,000, par value.
The demand evidently proceeded from high
financial quarters, including banks. Injur
ance companies and other large corpora
tions. Liberty 8Vs made the greatest gain
at a net advance of 78 cents per $100 to
06.00. The flrat 4 '4 s rose 30 cents te 05.40,
the second 414s 24 cents to 09.24. and the
fourth 44s 38 centa to 95.54.
The demand for liberty Issues, which
later extended to other bonds, notably sev
eral foreign war flotations, was accom
panied by Indications of easier money. De
mand loans opened at 5 per cent, but the
light Inquiry at that, figure soon forced
the rate to 4H. Much money was available
for one to two months' accommooauons.
Concurrent short selling and covering In
stocks of the same descriptions caused con
fusion. The only Issues to register more
than nominal changes, mostly upwara
were specialties of the utility, chemical
and minor Industrial typea
Dealings in rails were unusually con
tracted and many popular industrials
such as steels, enuinments and motors,
held within fractional bounds, while oils
reflected profit-taking over the Impending
holiday. Sales were 6.,0.000 shares.
Remittances to neutral countrlea. par
ticularly Holland and Sweden, at gains of
15 to 20 points, featured the foreign ex-
chana-es. Sterllna was firm, but rates to
the other allied countriea showed further
heaviness.
In addition to liberty Issues. French mu
nicipals displayed marked atrengt'h. Many
domesur ratis. especially convertible issues,
were at their top prices for a year or more.
Total sales, par value. $20,730,000.

Boston Trade Estimates Country's
Consumption Next Year Will
Be 600,000,000 Pounds.
BOSTON. Mass., Nov. 23. (Special.)
The Indefinite extension of the life of Che
emergency tariff haa given additional Im
petus to the upward tendency in wool
price here, aa It Is seen that no more
foreign wool can be made available until
scarcity has advanced price to a level
making It profitable to withdraw auch
wool from bond and pay a, duty of 30
cent per grease pound.
The Boston trade estimates that the
country's wool consumption the next yeax
will be normal, or 600.000.000 pounds, and
that the domestic clip of 1921 Is 250,000,000
pounds. On ttils basis 350,000,000 pounds
of foreign wool must be secured. The only
argument against the logic of these fig
ures Is the country-wide demand for lower
priced goods and the refusal of textile
operatives to accept wage reductions.
The logic of the situation Is causing
considerable speculation In wool by deal
ers. This has been a feature of the trad
ing thlsi week. Operations are confined
largely to medium wool, because so much
of these have been absorbed by the yarn
knlttera Dealers fear to be caught with
out such supplies when the demand comes
from mills for the heavy weight season,
hence accumulation 1 general where pos
sible. Callrornia six months' wool has sold at
41 to 45 cents for average and 60 to 52
cents for good new California. Fall wools
are being acoured on thavcoast and wilt
not be available hero until later. Texas
fall wools are selling at 60 to 63 cents and
braid wools at 26 to 32 cents and Montana
In original bags at IS to 31 cents, accord
ing to staple and condition.
Valuea for territory wools run about as
follows: Fine staple, 83 to 87 cents: fine
and fine medium staple, 82 to 83 cents;
half blood staple. 70 to 75 cents; good,
fine and fine medium clothing. 70 to 75
centa: quarter-blood, 45 to 50 cents; three
eightiis blood, 52 to 53 cents. Some dealers
are talking of 55 to 60 cents for three
eighths blood, which figures, though ex
treme, are typical of the trend.
A good turnover In super pulled wools
is In progresa. One transaction involves
2000 bags at 48 cents clean. In Ohio
eastern buyera are reported paying 83 cents
for fine wools and '25 cents for medium.
In this market Ohio fine clothing Is sell
ing at 30 cents and quarter-blood at 26
to 27 cents, r .
Other Ohio wools are quoted as fol
lows: Fine unwashed delane, 85 o 36
cents; fine unwashed clothing, 29 to 3C
cents; half-blood combing, 32 to 83 centa
three-elahths blood. 20 centa
Some transfers of foreign wool in bond
are noted and much Montevideo 6s have
sold at 17 cents.' A sale of 15.000 bales of
Puntaa wool Is reported. Oregon and Utah
wools are held on consignment for higher
prices.
London Wool Auction Firm.
LONDON, Nov. 23. At the wool auction
sales today 12.621 bales were offered.
There waa a fair demand from the home
trade and the continent. The opening
rates were maintained, but there was
more competition for fine kinds.

EXPORT SALES AT GULF
HIGHER MARKETS AT BCEXOS
AIRES AND LIVERPOOL.
Chicago Traders Become Bullish
With Revival of Foreign
Buying of Wheat.
CHICAGO, Nov. 23. Export sales at ths
gulf of Mexico, together with unexpected
higher prices at Liverpool . and Buenos
Aires, had a bullish effect today on wheat
here. The close, although unsettled, was
1 to 2c net advance with December,
$1.10 to $1.10 and May. $1.13 to
$1.13. Corn gained and to c
oata, and' to o and provisions,
3 to 12c.
Bullish sentiment as to wheat predom
inated. With foreign prices going upward,
the question of whether additional ex
ports from this country would be at tha
expense of domestic requirements received
fresh notice, especially as domestic ar
rivals remained small. Meanwhile, London
reporta told of activity In buying by Jap
anese and of unfavorable crop conditions
in Argentina. The only setbacks which
occurred in values proved transient, but
the December delivery eased somewhat as
compared with May. elevator Interests
announcing the purchase of considerable
hard wheat to be brought here from out
side terminals.
Corn and oats rose with wheat. For
the first time In weeks, December corn
commanded 50 cents or more a bushel.
Provisions were given a lift by strength
In hog values, as well as In grain.
The Chicago grain letter received yester
day by the Overbeck A Cooke company of
Portland follows:
Wheat The most bullish news of many
a day found substantial reflection In the
market despite the appearance of renewed
selling and rather Indifferent outside buy
ing, on account of the holiday tomorrow.
Foreign cables had a decidedly optimistic
tone and the Liverpool market confirmed
a stronger situation abroad by advancing
three pointa. It would appear as though
available supplies on the other side, which
recently were reported to be pressing on
the market, havo been well cleaned up
and miliera In the United Kingdom are
expected to take hold again In the very
near future. An eastern statistician Is
sued a statement Placing exports from
July 1 to date at 179.000.900 bushels, and
sdded that In spite of claims to the con
trary wheat la still clearing in good vol
ume. In other words, we have already
exported our surplus and the bullish ar
aliments of two months ago. which proved
of no value, are Just beginning to mate
rialize.
Corn Trade was broad and the market
strong throughout on buying led by ship
ping interests and commission houses. Ex
porters were again In the market, but bids
were slightly below the ideas of sellers
and there was no business confirmed. Spot
offerings met a ready demand at a firm
basis. An article from Minneapolis report
ing merchants taking corn from farmers In
payment of debts and for merchandise at
10 cents per c-usnei over tne maraet price
was unimportant in itself, but had a aen-
timental effect here.
Oats Outside traae was laoking, nut tne
market ruled firm on local buying Inspired
by the strength In other grains. Cash
was strong. Country offerings to arrive
show no increase.
Rve Trade was small nut tne marxer,
strong, helped by reporta from the east
; good export inquiry, caan was nrm
but Inadequate.
Flax Slightly nigner on some commis
sion house buying, but offerings were
lift. . . .'
