Society Woman Makes Home
for Jobless of Block.
BACK BAYITES SHOCKED
Friend of Unemployed Declares
Her "Boys" Are Fine Men and
Defies Puritanism.
BOSTON, Nov. 18. (Speolal.) While
tJrbaln J. Ledoux. apostle of the
- church of the unemployed in Boston's
alums, conferred with Mayor Peters
and state officials in city hall regard
ing1 the use of a state armory to house
Jobless men, six of the "slaves" he
had auctioned on the block on the
historic common disported themselves
in the palatial suburban residence of
Mrs. W. Thatcher Mollis, wife of a
Boston leather dealer, herself the
proprietor of a flourishing trucking
business.
She has braved the hostility of
fashionable neighbors, even of the
clergy of her district, and Suffered
the loss of her nursemaid, who de
serted when the "slaves" invaded the
colonial mansion and one of them
"took" to the baby.
Society Woman Stand. Alone.
But among all those who have
espoused the cause of the man who by
his spectacular, methods has aroused
not only praise and nation-wide inter
est, but calumny and abuse, Mrs.
Hollls, the society woman, stands in a
class alone. Listen to her giving or
ders to some of the six slaves she
bought at the block on the common
and took Into her home:
"Albert, will you take this watch
to the Jeweler in Boston this morning
to have a new crystal put in it?"
"Arthur, please take this $100 and
pay this bill of $93 for me."
"Robert, will you get the baby's coat
upstairs In the front room"
"These men have the run of the
house." Mrs. Hollis explained to a re
porter, after she had sent one of them
to the second floor to get the wrap
for the child. "And they have lived
up to the trust I have placed in them."
Proteges Are "Good Boys.
"They are good boys. One gets a $5
a month pension as a disabled navy
man. He must go back to the Parker
Hill hospital for examination the com.
ing week. In the meantime he is look
ing for work. Some of the other men,
you notice, are wearing the American
Legion insignia. Until they -get em
ployment our house Is open to them. I
have found homes for 18 others
among my friends in tho Newtons.
"Most of them have turned out well,
but it would be too much to expect
that all of them would prove capable
and competent. It is likely that lomi
grafters will try to impose on people
"I am Judging only the men I have,
and for a whole week they have
proved themselves worthy of assist
ance. The watch I entrusted to one
fellow was valued at $200. On his
return trpm Boston at 2 o'clock In
the afternoon he told my eldest son
Warren, who will enter Dartmouth
this fall, that he was honest, and
only Just 'out of luck.' "
Four Children In Family.
In the Hollls family are four chil
dren. The youngest Is Buddy, the
playboy of the house, but young Rob
ert also chums with the six men of
the adopted brood.
The "slaves" live with the family.
Rooms on the top floor have been
furnished with extra beds two men
to a bed. They eat in the family din
ing room, expensively equipped with
liver and cut glass refracting the
rays coming through the sun porch.
The nursemaid quit in disgust, de
claring she wouldn't work in a fam
ily which gave strangers the freedom
of the house; but the cook doesn't
protest, despite the healthy appetites
of the young ex-service men.
Mr.. Hoi II In llu.lne.a.
Mrs. Hollis, sole owner of a truck
ing business in the city, has made
her mark in the Boston business
world, but her friends delight more to
tell of her prowess as a war worker.
When her husband enrolled she en'
tered the secret service and was toe
cial agent for some time engaged in
highly important work in Washing-
ion ana in Europe.
"I believe Mr. Ledoux is sincere In
his work," she says, "and I have en
deavored to help him. 1 am going to
urge the women's club, of which I
am a member, to assist him in placing
as many men as possible.
"Many of my friends in Newton
Boston business men. have toldi me
they wanted to do all they could. I
have received 22 substantial subscrip
tions from theso men, who said it
would be inadvisable for them to
help In any other way than through
tno cnannels of private contributions.
Worth-while persons are responding
ana i believe the church of the un
employed will shortly .ssue a state
ment to show how many worth-while
rolks have responded
Where la Spirit of Ilrlpf
"It does seem absurd to have beau
tiful churches and huge edifices In
which to worship God. and to have
men destitute on th streets. People
in comfortable homes not ready to do
something to help these men certainly
have none of the spirit of Christ In
their hearts."
She says she did not know Ledoux
until she saw him on the commons
nelling- "slaves." And she knew none,
of the men she "bid in."
Tho oldest 's 21 and the youngest
13 but beyond that, as to whether
they are New England boys, or
whether they have Riven their right
names! Mrs. Hollis will not say. As
for them, one of them was discovered,
paint brush In hand, putting the fin
ishing touches on a bench for 6-months-old
Buddy. They use the
only word "wonderful" to describe
their experience.
In their odd' moments the six slaves
play rough and tumble with the
younKsters. Mis. Hollis says the kids
are anything but mollycoddles and
she believes in their being "treated
rough."
Meantime. Puritan Boston society
of the Back Bay sits primly aghast
and awaits the worst!
HOBOS HIT TRAIL SOUTH
"KnijtMs of Ittmd" Ilrsicjre Lumber
SclKMnrs at Aliordeen.
ABERDEEN. Wash., Nov. IS. (Spe
cial.) Grays Harbor, within the last
few day, has become a division point
on a much-traveled route the hobo
trail to the funny south, where many
migratory citizens of slender purse
hibernate through the winter.
Numerous "knlchts of the road,"
fleeing from the chilly blasts of the
interior, have been attracted here by
the possibility of working; their way
to San Pedro and other southern coast
cities in lumber schooners clearing
from this port, according to ships' of
ficers who have been beselged by
these "tourists" seeking transporta
tion to a clime where (ewer blankets
are needed.
