17 THE MORNING OltEGOXIAN, THURSDAY, XOVE3IBER 17, 1921 NO EXPORT TRADE IHI COAST WHEAT Operations of Australian Ship pers Extended. SALES AT LOWER PRICES Flour Offered at Mediterranean Ports 60 Cents Barrel Under Best Figure of Mills Here. The local wheat market was higher yes terday with Chicago. Blda were advanced S cents on hard white and soft white, iVt oenta on white club and 2 cents on bard winter. The market here goes no an down with tne east, but It appears to be mill buying and the covering of previous sales that Is keeping; prices In line. There Is nothing in the export situation to warrant activity r even the paWng of current prices. Yes terday's cables showed that Australia la not only underselling the Paclflo coast in the United Kingdom, but also in the con tinental markets, in Constantinople, Japan and China. Australia is likewise offering flour to Mediterranean ports at 60 cents s barrel better than the mills in this sec tion can do. The gulf trade is also suffering from a severe Interruption to its foreign wheat commerce, as shown by the following sta tistics of New Orleans exports in Oc tober of thla and last year and for the season to date. The figures were com piled by the Louisiana state grain in spection department: short supply of fresh stocks, storage eggs are moving out better. The cube butter market was steady and a good local and shipping demand took all the stocks offered. Turkey receipts were of fair sise and most of them went to fill out-of-town or ders. The general market was around 40 cents. Live poultry prices In sJl lines were fairly steady. Canned Milk Declines. All brands of ' canned milk, both the large and small sixes, were reduced 83 cents a case yesterday. EASIER m FACTOR STOCKS STRONG AND HIGHER AXD TRADING ACTIVE. Bank Clearings. Cotton and Stock Strength Also Tends to Stimulate Buying : at Chicago. CHICAGO. Nov. 16. Decided upturns In wheat took place today, owing more or less to a rise In foreign exchange. The Cose, although unsettled, was 2-02c net higher, with December $1.06 1.06 lc and lc. and oats 0c to c. and May $1.09 1.09 . Corn gained 0 Provisions varied from unchanged to loc decline. t With sterling exchange quoted above 14 for the first time this year, wheat had an upward alant, except about the middle of the session, when large selling orders from the east forced a temporary sharp set back. Strong commission bouses absorbed the offerings, however, and news favored . the bulls, advices telling of better export demand at the gulf and of Germany taking 1 flour at the Atlantto seaboard. Gossip was also current that a powerful banking ' Interest was working on a loan to tier- many. Strength in stocks and cotton i tended further to stimulate buying. On the other hand, the fact that absence of moisture continued in the southwest was overshadowed V by predictions of general rain or snow. Announcement that much Canadian grain would go to Eairops by way of Vancouver received considerable nctlce. Active demand from the east together with scantiness of receipts here, gave a lift to the corn market. Oats sympathized with the sdvancs of other cereala Provisions at first were firm, reflecting the action of bogs and grain, but packers' selling of lard brought about something ot a reaction. The Chicago grain letter received yes terday by the Overbeck A Cooks company of Portland follows: Wheat There was plenty of bull news today to Justify a strong market, but early in the session outside buying power was so utterly lacking that the market again displayed weaknesa The turn cams In the last hour with the advance meeting little opposition. The improvement was reflected In advanced premiums at the gulf and there waa also good demand lo cally from mlllera and exportera A sig nificant feature of the market for the past few days has been the relative strength of the near-by delivery. This should evince no surprise as the stock of contract wheat In Chicago is only little more than 600,000 bushels, with every likelihood of a decrease from week to Underlying strength was again apparent and -when wheat turned up this market was quick to follow. In fact, there were not a few in the trade who expressed the opinion that corn is about to assume the leadership of the grain markets. Ru mors were again current regarding possi bilities of war finance corporation taking care of the burdensome surplus of this ar tiole and although argumenta are heard to the effect that the plan Is not feasible and would be of little benefit, the fact remains that any action which would tend to relieve the immediate pressure would be reflected In a stronger market. This Is especially true at this time In view of the activity of the cash demand. We have no hesitancy in recommending purchases of corn futures at this level. Oats Followed the leadership of wheat and corn. The cash was firm with de mand rather Indifferent, but offerings light. There la little In the way of news to stimulate bullish enthusiasm, but It Is to be expected that strength in other directions will exert more or less influence on this market. Rye Showed strength throughout the session, due to decreased pressure from the northwest snd' moderate buying by the seaboard. Cash waa stesdy at half cent over December bid for No. 2 on track. Provisions Rather strong at opening, but soon weakened on scattered selling, which met poor support. Grain strength caused a rally at the close. Leading futures ranged as follows: WHEAT. Open.
