Ex-Utahans Back Exposition. Ex
residents of Utah who are now living
In Oregon are planning to aid in the
campaign to promote the 19-5 exposi
tion in Portland. What is intended
to be done will be unfolded at a dinner-meeting
at the Chamber of Com
merca Saturday evening. Jay H.
Stockman, deputy county attorney,
and others prominent in local pro
fessional activities are working for
the success of the meeting. Ex-Utah
persons now here are requested to
notify "Bud" Black, telephone East
8J97, or D. S. Bennion. Tabor ?25, of
reservations for the dinner.
Blow Dealt Bootleooers. The
bootlegging industry of Portland re
ceived a blow yesterday when Judge
Bean decided that Intoxicating liquor
seized by the police would be recog
nized as evidence In the federal court
whether It was taken with or with
out a search warrant. John Remac,
Michael Zarkvlch and Antone Kozun
Ich had been arrested by the police,
who seized from them a suitcase con
taining liquor without f-irst having
obtained a search warrant. The men
sought the return of the .liquor
through the federal court.
Armistice Praters Planned. A
"quiet hour of prayer" and thanks
giving will be observed In the audi
torium of the Portland Y. M. C. A.
tomorrow In commemoration of the
ending of the world war by the sign
ing of the armistice. A public meet
ing will be held from 11 to 12 o'clock.
Prayers will be spoken in thank
fulness for the conclusion of the
great war. J. W. Palmer, executive
secretary of the department of social
and rellKlous work of the Y. M. C. A.,
will preside.
Jail Kitchen Is Proposed. A
kitchen may be established next year
In the city Jail to prepare food for
prisoners. The question was pre
sented to the council by Chief of
Police Jenkins last year, but was re
jected. At that time it was estimated
that 12070 would be required for
equipment and that $6500 would cover
the coat of the food. The city pays
out approximately $10,000 a year for
meals purchased under contract. The
question is now under advisement.
Damaoe Suit Trial Opens. The
suit of Henry A. Schmidt of Till
mook against the Cudahy ' Packing
company for $25,000 damages alleged
to have been Inflicted when he was
struck by one of the company's auto
mobiles while walking along the road
nsar Tillamook started yesterday in
the federal court before Judge v ol
verton. In addition to the $25,000
Schmidt la asking $906.60 special
damages and $1000 punitive damages.
POBTOFriCE Closes Tomorrow. The
Portland postoffice and branches will
be closed tomorrow because of the
Armlstlo day holiday, announced
Postmaster Jones yesterday, except
that stamp windows at the new office
and central station will be open from
IA. SI. until noon. Carriers will not
make deliveries. Perishable matter
will be delivered and outgoing mall
will be dispatched aa usual.
Barn Declared Unsanitart. Prop,
erty owners in Woodlawn have filed
a, petition, urging the city council to
take steps to have an old barn located
at 12S5 East Fifteenth street north
cleaned or demolished. The petition
ers say the barn Is an old structure,
badly deteriorated, overrun by rats
and so unsanitary as to be a menace
to the neighborhood.
Sherwood Will Celebrate Sher
wood will be converted into a typical
French village with members of the
American Legion in uniform re
enacting the scenes of 1917-18, Armis
tice night. The legion post of the city
has arranged a programme which,
la all respects, will typify army life
la France. There will be singing,
acting and dancing.
Auxiliary Members to Report.
Members of the American Legion aux
iliary who wish to participate In the
parade on Armistice day will report
on the Fifth-street side of the court
house 'tomorrow afternoon at 1
o'clock. Automobiles will be pro
vided. Neoroes Favor Fair. The negro
residents of Portland are in favor of
the 1925 exposition, according to sen
timent expressed Tuesday night at a
mass meeting at the First African
Methodist Episcopal Zion church.
Negro speakers said they will have a
building of their own at the fair.
Tank Corps Men, Attention: All
members of the tank corps who left
Portland and served overseas are re
quested to call Edward V. Knox at

Dr. Rossiter is Crrr. Dr. F. M.
RosBiter, who formerly lived in Port
land, is here for a few days visiting:
old friends. He is on his way to Los
Angeles after 16 months In London,
where he has been doing: special
medical work. Dr. Rossiter left Port
land six years ago. He had lived In
this- city about three years. While
here he conducted a health depart
ment in The Oregronlan. In London
Dr. Rossiter studied at the University
college, London, and St. Bartholo
mew's hospitals. He is visiting: Dr.
W. B. Holden here.
Women Realtors Meet. John
Gratke will be one of the speakers
at the first dinner of the women's
realty board to be held in the Dutch
room of the Hazel wood tomorrow
evening: at 6 o'clock. Mrs. W. J.
Hawkins is also on the programme
for an address. The progress made
by the organization will be reported
on and delegates who went to the
Eugene convention will tell of de
velopments there. The meeting is
open for all women real estate
dealers.
Fair Tax Levt Indorsed Resolu
tions indorsing the proposed tax levy
for the 191T5 exposition and calling
upon the city council to oper. and

Student Officials Named. William
Scott, senior was yesterday elected
editor in chief of. the Griffin, the
Reed' college annual. William Helms
was elected business manager. Mr.
Scott Is at the present time a mem
ber of the Quest staff, while Mr.
Helms is the present business man
ager of the same publication.
Damage Suit Piled. Damages of
$5248 are sought in a suit filed in
the circuit court yesterday by Andreas
C. Albrecht against Carroll Sayrs and
F. Sayrs for injuries received while
operating an alleged defective engine
on the Sayrs ranch, near Wasco, Or.
Offender Gets Six Months. Six
months on the county rockpile was
the sentence given Richard Miles
when he pleaded guilty before Judge
Stapleton yesterday to a charge of
receiving stolen property.

theater tonight, will aford theater

of the most thrilling and beautiful
stories that the American stage has
ever had In the form of a spectacle
It was the sensation of Paris In 1914
at the Theater Renaissance and last
winter achieved one of the biggest
hits at the Century theater in New
York that playhouse has ever wit
nessed. The costumes, gorgeously colored
and strangely beautiful, were designed
by Percy Anderson, the famous Urlt
Ish artist. Local theater-goers have
already become acquainted with Mr.
Anderson's art, for It was he who
designed the costumes for "Chu Chin
Chow," and now, at the age of 72,
he has fairly outdone himself in the
production of "Aphrodite."
"Aphrodite" Is one of the most ex
pensive spectacular offerings ever
staged.

Demotion From Lieutenant Brief
AVhen Chief Jenkins' Consults
Civil Service List.
Fred M. West, police sergeant, was
promoted to a captaincy and assigned
to take charge of the second night
relief of the uniform bureau, accord
ing to announcement yesterday by
Chief Jenkins. West relieves Captain
Harms, who is assigned to the detec
tive bureau as captain of detectives.
In the recent police shake-up Cap
tain West was demoted from lieuten
ant to sergeant, but because he stood
highest on the list of those who had
passed the examination for captain,
his appointment was made by the
chief.
Captain West reported to the sec
ond night relief last night and will
work with Captain Harms for the re
mainder of the week. In order to
familiarize himself with the routine
of the office. Captain Harms will
ascend to the detective bureau the
first of the week. -
Senior Captain Moore will still re
main as commanding officer of the
detective dlvisron with the rank of
chief of inspectors, and Lieutenant
Thatcher will remain in command of

GRANTS PASS. Or., Nov. 9. (Spe
cial.) Of the 1377 school children In
the Grants Pass district between the
ages of 4 and 20, there are 689 boys
and 6S8 girls. Last year there were
1330 registered In the district. Under
the method of computing the popula
tion by a ratio of 1 to 3. there are
4200 inhabitants at present In the city.
