THE MORXIXG OREGON! A.N. TUESDAY. NOVEMBER 1, 1921 51D MEMBERS QUIT llffl'S LEAGUE Withdrawal Is Result of Long Jissatisfaction. MANAGEMENT NOT LIKED Resolutions Adopted at Recent Meetings Demanding Changes In Handling Affairs. ASTORIA. Or., Oct. 31. (Special.) As the result of a meeting here this afternoon of K. C. Kldrldge, manager of the Oregon Dairymen's League, with delegates from the various locals in sone five. 610 dairymen in this zone have withdrawn from all affilia tion with the league and are taking steDS to form a local organization The dairymen have been dissatisfied for some time because they received. no voice in the affaire of the league the entire management being concen trated ut the headquarters in Port land. Accordingly, at meetings held during the last few days In various parts of the zone resolutions were adopted demanding that changes be made In the by-laws of the league to permit of different methods in han dling the affairs of the dairymen. Demands Are Summed Up. These demands may be summed up .as follows: First Authority to be given to the zone directors to shape the policies and manage the affairs of the dairy men within the zone. Second The keeping of separate account at each zone headquarters, instead of all the accounts being kept at Portland, In order that errors may be adjusted quickly and with less ex pense. Third The furnishing to each zone of a monthly statement by the general manager as to the amount of the zone's product sold, the price obtained, the amount of products on hand and the expense incurred in the state headquarters. Fourth Selection of at least one bank in each zone to act as a deposi tory of the funds of the organization of each zone. KequrNtM Are llenled. The demands were presented some days ago to the directors of the league, who authorized Manager Kldrldge to make such changes in the methods of management as he saw fit. At the meeting today Mr. Eldridge denied the requests and submitted a counter proposal, whereby the book keeping and banking for this zone were to be conducted here, but he re served to himself the right to control all the league business. The delegates, by unanimous vote, rejected that proposal, thus automat ically, by the authority Invested in them by the various locals, severing the membership in the league of the 610 members In this zone. The man ager declared at the meeting that the withdrawal of one complete zone will have the effect of disrupting the en tire league. ' The state organization still owns a creamery and three cheese factories In zone 5. Asked what the league Intends to do with them, Mr. Kldrldge replied he would lease them so as to produce some revenue. It was said that deflections from the league have been so pronounced In the last few months that of the 510 members only 180 have been deliver ing the products of their dairies to the league plants. Men and Business. 11 y Itlrliard Kplllane. BY RICHARD SP1L.LANE. ON THE ROAD, Oct. 26. Oil has been substituted for coal in New Orleans to a pronounced degree, both in industrial establishments and by vessels. The largest dealer in coal in Louisiana gave the writer a copy of a letter he wrote to V. J. Mitchell, vice-president of the Canal-Commercial Trust & Savings bank, on this subject. Here it is, in part: "tearn coal for land users. Includ ing tonnage consigned to New Orleans by two railroads leading west, prior to about three years ago approxi mated 1.000.000 tons annually. This was reduced rapidly until about 18 months ago, when about 75 per cent, or 750,000 tons, of coal had been re placed by oil as fuel. "Steam coal for steamship bunkere. including export shipments, prior to about two years ago amounted to approximately 750,000 tons annually. "Substantially, the same volume was handled during 1919, but this approx imated about 1.000.000 tons during 1920 and will fall back during 1921. If deliveries the first half of the year are maintained, to about 750.000 tons, though possibly for the year down to 600,000 tons. "While there has been enormous In crease in use of oil as fuel by steam ships, the Increase in shipping was sufficient to maintain and for a while Increase the tonnage of coal required. Vessels entering this port for the lawt 12 months represented as between coal burners and oil burners about 60 to 65 per cent coal and 35 to 40 per cent oil. Kor the last 60 to 90 days and right now this percentage would show an Increase somewhat in percentage favor of oil vessels owing to the abnormally low price of oil, whereas the price of coal has not dropped a great deal, owing to wage and transportation costs. "The writer "does not believe economic and other conditions are such as to tend, on the whole, to much further replacement of oil for coal, although he realizes, because of New Orleans' nearness to producing fields- domestic and foreign and ex tensive development of oil refineries, oil depots and oil-handling plants hre. that use of oil as fuel at New Orleans will be large for quite some time to come." . - Traffln In one of the principal FOR SALE I drove into Portland from Montana yesterday en route to California with almost new late model CADILLAC Suburban (Closed Type) Business calls me back im mediately, will sacrifice for a quick SPOT CASH sale.
