17 TIIE MOIiXIXG OltEGOXIAN, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 27, 1921 P REVIVES E AFTER M Will Ruling on Medicinal Beer Strengthens Market. :3SEri?!LIBEBTy BONDS FIRMER PRICES UP 1 TO 2 CENTS JIany Inquiries From Kaslcrn Wuycrs Indicate Early Rcsump tion of IJu.slnesa Here. Th hop market hit gained in strength In no imall decree In the past day or two. The chance In sentlmtnt can be credited entirely to the medicinal beer riling. Efforta to depress the market have not ceased, but In spite of them prices are sl.owlns; a tendency to advance. Qrowers who last week were trying to ftnd buyers and were wllllnc to make concessions are now asking mora fur their hops or have taken them off the market entirely. As hlfch as -l cents has been paid In the last two days, as against 25 cents, the price ruling last week. At the Utter figure there was a rather trading movement between dealers, and some lots even snld at !4 cents. Now the policy of sellers Is to hold for more money. Whereas there was practically no de pand from the east up to a day or two ago, dealers are now receiving many in quiries. These are nut urttera. but they show a revival of Interest In the market, which la expected to lead to actual busi ness In ths nenr future. The export situation has undergone no change and thereels nothing to Indicate when foreign buying will open up. but men In the hop ' trade believe that If American prices show a substantial ad vance the English buyers will begin to look with mora favor on Paoiflo coast hops. Spot cotton quiet, kUddllng, 18.20c, Prices at Chicago Close Heavy and Lower Corn and Oats Also Decline. CHICAGO, Oct. 26. Assertions that ex porters were selling red winter wheat back to primary markets at a profit gave a Jolt today to bulls In wheat. Prices closed heavy, lc to 2c net lower, with December $1.00 to $1.07. and May $1.11 to $1.11. Corn lost Vic to c. and oats cto c. Provisions varied from 5c de cline to an advance ot 2c. Initial upturns appeared to be baaed chiefly on opinions that receipts of grain would be amall for some time, at least un til the roaiiroad strike problem waa set tled. Complaints of dry weather, too, continued from parts of the winter crop belt. Corn and oats were governed almost en tirely by the action of wheat. Support from packers counter-balanced In the provision market the effect of weakness in grain and bogs. The Chicago grain letter, received yes terday by the Overbeck eV Cooke company of Portland, follows: Wheat There waa too much bear news in circulation tor the market to atand up today. The seaboard reported stagnation in the export trade, while Interior mar kets quoted cash prices weak, due to the withdrawal of domestic millers from the market.1 It was also reported that a cargo of red wheat had been shipped back from Montreal to Toledo. A great deal of talk has been heard recently of European re selling, according to an eastern news agency. Throe of the largest exporters say that such reports, with a' few excep tions, have been without foundation all season. The Canadian bugaboo la still being emphasised by the trade, but has spent Its force aa an Influential factor. The Indlcatlona are that from now on we will be eating Into the visible supply and this, in our opinion, spells a higher market. Corn Declined with wheat, but met good support on the way down, although the seaboard reported fresh cables 2 cents out of line. The shipping demand In the local market both for foreign and domestlo account waa quite good. Cash was strong and the basis again advanced e to c over yesterday. Attention Is now being called to the tremendous con sumption of corn, such as Is certain to take place at present low prices. Oats Considerable liquidation made ita appearance In the market today, but of ferings were well taken on the decline. The buying by cash houses was particu larly impressive. The period of accumu lation is behind us and we look for the market to gradually gather strength. Rye Futures were insctlve and followed fluctuations In wheat.
