CCBE BUTTER 19 IN FAIR 8CPPLY
Egg Market Steady, With Gradual Increase
in Receipts.
Cube butter was offered at a wide range
of 42 ',4 844 cents, according to grade.
There was a fair supply on th market
and ths demand was not brisk.
The egg trade was also slow. Arrivals
from the country show a smsll but stesdy
gain and this with the free offerings of
storsgs eggs give the market a slightly
easier appearance, but prices have not
been changed.
Th. poultry market was weak with a
good supply on hand. Country dressed
meats, particularly veal, were hard to sell
and prices were weak.

Idaho Growers U Market Their Product
Under Trade Mark.
CALDWELL, Idaho. Oct. 81. (Special.)
Henceforth Idaho alfalfa and clover seed
will be marketed under a trade mark, ac
cording to plans by the Western Seed
Growers' Marketing company at a meet
ing here yesterday. The course was ne
cessitated, according to H. C. Grimm,
Idaho Falls, president, because of the
custom of eastern distributors in blending
the highly-colored Idaho seed with the
Inferior product of other sections.
The market price of the blended prod
uct has been the basis of the price re
ceived by the Idaho grower of high seed.
The value of the Idaho seed crop this year
Is estimated at more than a million dol
lars. Oregon Tokay Grapes Higher.
Receipts of southern Oregon grapes are
falling off and tha market is advancing.
Tokays were quoted yesterday at $2.50
to 13 a lug. Local Concords were In fair

Traders Believe Threatened Rail
waj Strike "Will Be Prevented
by the President, -
CHICAGO. Oct. 21, Wheat price took
a decided upward wlng today. Influenced
more or lea by belief in vaxloua quarter
that the president and hi cabinet would
find a solution tor th threatened railroad
trik. The market closed strong. 3H to
4feo net higher, with December $luS to
$1.084, end May S1.12 to S1.12fe. Corn
gained fee to fee and oata Wo to ,
In provisions, th outcome varied from
the same as yesterday's finish to. &c
higher.
Not withstanding the breakup of the
parley here between the railway union
representatives and the government labor
board, price for wheat bad an upward
Impetus. Speculator led the movement,
and offerings were so readily absorbed
that shorts hurried to cover and tbua
aided the advance. Word that Europe
had taken 1,000,000 bushel of durum and
Manitoba counted, too. aa a bullish factor
and so did genra.l recognition that for
several day the market had been acting
a if oversold. Improved demand for flour
tended further to help the advance of
wheat. Definite announcement of the call
ing of a new conference her to deal with
the railroad strike situation waa made
juat after the day trading had been
ended.
Corn and oats reflected the strength of
wheat Offerings were smalt
Provisions rose with hogs snd grain. Be
side packers were understood to be ac
cumulating stocks to meet any emergency
from th threatened strike.
The Chicago grain letter, received yes
terday by the Overbeck & Cooke company
ui Portland, follows:
Wheat It waa a strong market through
out the session, despite the faot that local
sentiment, was bearish. The conviction
that lower prices are to be established
has become so general that the trade com
pletely ignored- the importance of export
buying at a time when the market nai
been thoroughly liquidated. The seaboard
confirmed 1,000,000 bushels as having been
worked for export and from the looks of
things a much larger amount is likely to
be reported later in the day. The rail
road situation Is becoming more serioui
with both sides apparently anxious for a
final ahowdown. There i quite a diver
gene of opinion as to the possible effect
ot a railroad strike, but with a prolonged
tieup of trafUc we cannot see where
shorts would have any the best of it with
only about 600,000 bushels of contract
wheat in Chicago. A report that the
Italian government had bousht several
cargoes of wheat waa denied, but the
purchase no doubt was made by Individual
Italian importers, as th Italian govern
ment hai lately encouraged purchases.
Corn The buying of corn futures for
eeveral daya has been far more Impres
sive than the selling and the market to
day reflected a better feeling. Spot offer
ings were again in good demand at high
er prices and country offerings to arrive
were reported light. Disappointing husk
ing returns continue to come from Illi
nois and Indiana points and many re
ceivers are now beginning to doubt that
the new crop will be marketed as rapidly
aa previously expected.
Oats At no time during the day was
there any particular pressure on this mar
ket and consequently prices advanced
easily with other grains. Cash was half
a cent higher, with shipping demand
fairly good.
Rye Trad was light, but there wan
less hedging pressure from the northwest
and the strength in wheat induced short
covering.
Leading future ranged aa follow:

These losses were partly retrieved when
Mexican Petroleum became ths leader of

Early reversals extended to steels, rub

ever, and motors axreng-thened with util

Popular oils forged ahead almost from
ths outset, foreign Issues leading. Even
Royal Dutch, which recently lost ground
on selling attributed to Dutch Interests,
Ignored th. proposed senatorial Investiga

Call loan, opened at--4 per cent, but
th. demand for funds over the week-end
was large enough to force the rate to 5
per cent shortly after mid-day without
alteration, however, to Urn. quotations.

TRADE CONDITIONS NOT DISTURBED
Strike Cnsettlement Confined to Financial
Market.
NEW YORK.. Oct. 2L Dun's Review
tomorrow will eay:
Possibility of a widespread railroad
striks was not without Influence on busi
ness this week, but caused no conspicu
ous disturbance. Belief -that a walkout
would be averted was strengthened as
action toward that end was taken and
early unsettiement arising from the
threatened trouble was mainly confined
to speculative markets. While requests to
expedite shipments of goods under order
were mads in some Instances, there was
no general anxiety regarding supplies of
merchandise and forward demands were
not appreciably affected. Prospect of lower
freight rate Is entering Into calculations,
but th disposition to defer commitments
pending developments In this connection
is manifested In comparatively few
quarters. , .
Despite th existing uncertainties and
retarding factors, the commercial revival
Is making gradual progress, and the slowly
rising trend of production continues In
evidence. .
