Indian Government Estimates Crop st
4,100,000 Bales.
Ths rndlan government recently made a
final estimate of the yield of Jute from
the crop now under way, setting it down
as 4.100,000 bales. .In ths past 25 years
ths smallest Jute crop was 4. 800.000 bales,
end the average crop In tbs pant three
or four yeers haa been about 8,000,000
bale. Earlier In ths season the govern
ment had forecast a reduction In the crop
of 87 per cent, and the final forecast, con
firming the worst fears, had the effect of
starting a great speculation in the raw
material and Its products.
The large burlap Importers have been
warning Chetr clients that there Is a highly
speculative condition In the trade, both
here and In Calcutta, but they also stats
that much higher prices on Jute products
may bs expected until a larger raw ma
terial yield becomes possible.
Calcutta Jute mills hsve been operating
en a four-day-week schedule, and will
continue to do eo by sgreement for some
little time. There Is a substantial carry
ovsr from the last crop, and two weeks
ago there were burlaps enough in hand
at Calcutta to supply ths United Btates
market for three months. This surplus Is
disappearing ver rapidly. There has been
a very sharp Improvement in Jute founda
tion cloths for linoleums. In Jute yarns fur
carpets and upholsteries, and In other
Juts products. In many respects ths Im
provement resulting from a smalt crop
parallels the condition in cotton.
HIGHER BVTTKB TRICE NOT WANTED
Creamery Men Opposed to Any Change, but
May Have to Advance.
Cube butter sold at ths former price of
K43 cents for extras. Creamery men say the
only reason for a gnaeral advance In prices
at this time would be an advance at Se
attle and they do not look for this, as
ths Seattle trade Is apart on the question of
raising the market. No material increaae
In the make Is expected for about three
weeks yet and the butter makers hope to
hold prices where they are during that
period, although they assert there Is no
profit In ths creamery builness now with
butterfat prices where they are. Two
cars of eastern butter have been received,
but they were sent on to ths south.
Fresh sggs were very srce and firm.
Candled ranch sold on the street up to 43
cents.
Poultry was in moderate supply and
heavy bens and small springs sold well.
Country dreaed meats were slow.

cided upward swing today chiefly aa a re
sult of speculative buying, baaed on opin
ions that a rally waa ovardua. The mar
ket closed strong;. 1 to 2Hc net higher,
with December $1.23 to $1.23 snd May
I1.97V4 to 11.27. Corn finished e lower
to $c up; oats at c decline to c
advance, and provisions unchanged to 6oc
lower.
At first, wheat con tinned Its decline
with most traders rlvina much attention
to the lack of any Important European de
mand for shipments from tbe United
States. In the last half of the day, how
ever, persistent buying of wheat by pro
fessional operators, who have been con
spicuous on the selling side of late, forced
values into a rapid ascent. The market
Closed at the topmost level.
Corn and oats fluctuated with wheat. On
the downturn, &eptember corn touched the
lowest price on record since l&otf for that
month.
Lower quotations on hogs wee-kened pro
visions, especially lard. In which liquidat
ing sales were heavy.
The Chicago grain letter, received yes
terday by the Overbeck & Cooke company
of Portland, follows:
Wheat Sentiment was quite bearish
early in the day; In fact, so much so that
an over-sold condition developed and
prices recovered 4 to 4 cents from the
ow point In face of bearish news. Some
export business was reported worked on
the break, although the volume was not
large, and this feature waa completely off
set by advices from abroad telling1 of of
frrs to resell In London at five cents be
low replacement cost for Manltobas. Aus
tralia was also reported as offering wheat
to the United Kingdom for deferrd ship
ment at lower prices than either American
or Canadian wheat. Tbe United Kingdom
Is understood to have canceled a consid
erable quantity of Manltobas and would be
willing to concel more but for the inabil
ity of shippers to dispose of ocesn tonnaae.
The cash market was firm, especially for
the -better grades. Today's advance was
at the expense of the short Interests and
unless there Is a marked improvement in
the general character of news we do not
think prices will be maintained.
Corn All deliveries again sold at new
prices, but recovered most of the loss In
sympathy with wheat and on genersl short
covering. Large receipts met an indiffer
ent demand and spot premiums were fur
ther reduced. The country continues to
offer freely, even at the decline, and a bet
ter cash demand .will be necessary to give
permanent strength.
Oats declined early with other grains,
but met buying by commission houses, fol
lowed later by shorts. Cash prices were
steady to 14 lower. The Immediate sup
ply and demand situation Is quite well
balanced In the sense that country selling
is at a minimum and the demand like
wise. Rye Futures were wesk earry on con
tinued hedging by northwestern Interest a

coffee futures was higher today. Ths open
ing waa 2 to 8 points higher and activs
