for ungraded wools.
This association, composed of ISO Ore
gon wool (rowers, will this year for the
first time market through Portland some

materially changed yesterdsy. The tone
of the market was firm and all bids at
ths Merchants Exchange were tb same
as Monday.
Offers for coarse grains wers also un
changed, except September and October

of operations by bull pools and activities
of the shorts became more aggressive.
For the first time since the August re
covery, reports from commission houses
sounded a note of caution. Their attitude
s-emed to be based on the belief that pre
vailing conditions still left much to be de
sired. Market fluctuation In the main dupli
cated yesterday movements. Price tend
ed moderately upward at th opening, but
yielded before noon and became rssctlon
sry In the final hour, when leaders showed
extreme declines of 1 to SVi point. Sale
were 323.0OO shares.
United mates steel and Baldwin, the
foremost features, closed at fractional re
cessions, but Mexican Petroleum, the two
issues of Pan-Americsn, also Genersl Elec
tric. Studebaker. Northern Pacific and Fa
mous Players comprised th weakest
stocks.
Apart from the faot that call loans
opened and held at 41 per cent, the money
market was unaltered, although Interior
banks were said to have strengthened their
local reserves.

London rate showing comparative ateadl
ness, with variable reactions In most con
tinental bills. Central Iluropean rates
weakened, but far eastern bills continued
to Improve on continued purchase of sil
ver In London.

CHICAiOO. Sept. 20. Wheat display
new strength today, largely aa a result of
wet weather northwest.' The close was un
settled at the earn, as yesterday to c

changed to o lower, oats a ahade off
to o advance and provisions varying
from 10c decline, to a gain of 7 c
Excessive moisture in the spring wheat
territory waa reported to be hindering the
rree movement of the crop and to be
damaging grain la shock. Profit-taking
by pit trader who had been on tha buy
ing tde counted as a weight on the mar
ket toward the last and over-balanced
messagea from the southwest indicating
that the winter wheat movement would be
reduced materially after October 1.
Corn was governed almost entirely by
the action of wheat. Oats were strength
ened a little by export inquiry from Bel
glum and Italy.
Provision reflected at first th bullish
Influence of cotton and grain, but later
more effected more by declines la th value
of hogs.

terday by the Overbeck A Cook company
of Portland, follow:
Wheat Th unsettled weather In th
northwest, together with official confir
mation of August export figure as given out
yesterday, mad sentiment bullish early in
the day. Had It not been for the utter ab
sence of outside buying power. It 1 proba
ble that th market would have closed
higher. Aa It was, the advance waa not
maintained and at the close the tone waa
weak, with support lacking. Aside from a
small export inquiry for flour there waa
little activity in the export trade and the
seaboard bids were out of line. All cash
markets were strong and higher, Chicago
leading with an advance of S to 5 cents in
spring wheat premiums, while wlntera sold
at yesterday's basis.
The weakness in foreign exchange late
In the day was a depressing factor, as It la
feared that any further decline in exchange
might completely shut off export buying In
this country for the time being. We fully
appreciate the bullish atatiatlcal position
of wheat, but It takes a preponderance of
buying to advance -pricea. Thta is lacking
at present and we believe the market will
decline temporarily to a Point where poten
tial ouyers will Become more Interested.
Corn showed strength early, but turned
eauy with wheat, due to the same lack of
buying to counteract the effect of hedging
sale. There was practically no feature to
the news. Country offerings were again
reported light, while the cash market (saa
ateauy to a shade higher, with demand
good. An extended decline from this level
can hardly be expected, aa there la no s.gn
of buyers being overwhelmed by country
selling.
Oats Trade in this market was fairly
aotlve, with offerings taken better than In
any otner pit. bupply and demand condi
tions st the moment are on aa approximate
equilibrium, but It is plainly evident that
any Improvement In either the domesuo or
export Inquiry will make Inroads on the
visible supply, and right now there Is in
creasing evidence of interest on th part of
foreign buyers.
Kya Hedging pressure from the north-
weet was less conspicuous and price re
sponded readily to the advance in wheat
and to scattered buying by eastern Inler
sst. Cash ry was strong.
