by Crop Expert.
The strong demand for Marquis wheat
resulted in the raising of bids on northern
spring irora 8 to S cents at the Merchants'
Exchange yesterday. This put northern
spring on a parity wltn bard white. Ac
cording to some of the dealers this should
have been done long ago. Bids on. other
grades of wheat were 1 to 2 cents higher
than Wednesday.
A good demand was reported In the
country and a fair amount of business
was done, though farmers were said not
to be free sellers at the advance.
The flurry In the eastern wheat market
was attributed largely to B. W. Soow's
report, which put the wheat yield at
considerably less than the government es
timate. Snow's report said: "Condition
of corn 83 per cent indicating crop of
3.143.000.000 bushels. Reports based on ac
tual physical examination, however, are
less optimistic and there Is evidence of
failure of ears to fill and of loss 'from
the ravages of the ear worm that will only
bet measurable when the crop Is husked.
Threshing returns for winter wheat show
a further drop, now averaging 4.1 bushels
per acre with Indicated crop of 54S,0O0,0O0
bushels. A further decline of spring wheat
when harvested Is reported, average 11.1
bushels pe.' acre, making the crop 11)5,000,
000 bushels. Threshing yield of oats per
acre is less than a month ago; indicated
crop 1,040.000.000 bushels."
A Chicago bulletin said: "The fact that
no corn was delivered on September con
tracts shows the keen demand and the
underlying strength of this cereal. It Is
reported Greece took 1,800.000 bushels of
wheat. Russell says exporters took 400,000
bushels of corn."

There was a light run of six loads of
stock at the yards yesterday and of these
two loads of hove containing 250 head
came from North Dakota direct to a local
packer. There were no new developments
in the market. Prices were unchanged and
the tone of the market on the whole was
steady.
Receipts were 23 cattle, 6 calves, 3S3
hogs and 03 sheep.

'With the Pacific coast cranberry crop
now about ready for market and a few
small shipments already coming in, grow
ers and the trade in general are Interested
In the eastern crop situation.
Present Indications are for a Massachu
setts cranberry crop of 203,000 barrels.
against a crop of 280,000 last year. The
smallest one since 1900 was that of 120,000
in 1917, when about half the crop was
destroyed by severe freezing during the
harvesting.
- The latest information from Wisconsin
forecasts 22,700 barrels, against 34,000 last
year and the five-year average " of 35,000.
New Jersey, 175,000, against 122,000 barrels
last year and the five-year average of
140,320. The total for these three states
Is 402,700, against 431.000 last year and
the five-year average of 434.060.
Various unfavorable conditions combined
to reduce the Massachusetts crop May
and June frosts, floods in July and worms
since then. The fruit worm Is generally
reported as more destructive than usual
and growers fear quite heavy further re
duction of the crop from this pest, which
la yet very active. Set of fruit Is very
uneven. Growers report the berries some'
what larger and further matured than
usual and expect picking to begin early In
September.
BUTTER MAT BE AT TOP
Eastern Markets Are Weak and San Fran
cisco Declines Again.
While the butter market was firm yes
terday because of the small supply of
cubes, the opinion was expressed in the
trade that prices would go no Richer for

oi 2 cents at San Francisco and eastern
advices were easy. The markets in the
east are top-heavy and there are pros
pects of an unusually large fall make. In
the meantime, full prices are being offered
by creamery men here for butter fat:
The egg market was dull and weak
with resales of current receipts generally
at 29 cents. Few of the larger dealers
have offers out in the country and their
limit seems to be 27 cents. Receipts Were
light and -the local demand was slow.
The poultry market had a weak under
tone. Hens sold at 16 cents to 27 cents
according to size and springs brought 25
cents to 28 cents. There was a fair de
mand for veal, but pork dragged.
WHOLESALE PEACHES UNSETTLED
Taklma Elbertaa Cut to Cost Price First
Tokays Received.
The Front street peach market was un
settled. Yakima Elbertas started out at
$1.25, but soon they were selling generally
at $1.15, a price that allowed no profit
for the handlers.
The first Tokay grapes of the season
arrived and sold at $3.23. Black Prince
grapes were also received and quoted at
$2.50. Malagas were listed at $2. 50 2. 73.
Among the arrivals was a car of sweet
potatoes which were quoted at 595c,
according to quantity.
Wormy Fruit Condemned.
Several tons of fruit that was offered
on the market in an infected condition
has been condemned by County Fruit In
spector Walker. The quantities seized
ranged from single boxes up to ton lots.
Inspector Walker has issued a warning
to fruit growers in this vicinity to sort
their fruit at the orchards. This will save
tiiem much loss, as all fruit coming on
this market will be rigidly inspected.

triple holiday exerted a pronounced In
fluence over today's stock market. Deal
Inga fell tar below recent averages and
consisted largely of the closing of short
contracts.
Continued firmness of money rates, with
call loans holding at 5 per cent and
comparatively few extensions ot beptem
ber maturities except for the shorter ma
turities, also figured In the irregular operations.
The August review of the federal re
serve board, especially in relation to re
tail business, was borne out by the re
turns of Sears. Roebuck & Co. These
showed a decrease of slightly over 85 per
cent for the first eight months of the year.
Declaration of rexular common and pre
ferred dividends by the American Car ft
Foundry and American Steel foundry com
pany was noteworthy, because it sug
gested that better conditions are expected
in the steel and equipment industries.
Rails were a source of disappointment.

CHICAGO, Sept. 1. Trading in wheat
broadened aonsiderabiy and with limited
offerings prices advancd sharply and at
the top showed 5 cents over the inside
figures made early on the board of trade
today. Houses with eastern and seaboard
connections were free buyers and the mar
ket's action was taken as confirming the
recent trade opinion that any Increase In
the outside Interest would result in a sharp
advance. A private crop report showing
40.000,000 bushels of all wheat for the
country, or 17,000.000 less than the gov
ernment August report, had considerable
influence on sentiment, as it Indicated -
surplus of under 200,000,000 bushels on the
basis of nominal consumption and carry
over. The close wis strong with wheat 4
to 4c higher; corn up to lc and oats
to 114 c nigner. -Corn
showed fair activity and averaged
hlerher. September showed more strength
than the deterred aeuveries, setting ai
over December, with buying or September
and selling of December by cash Interests
the feature.
Oats were active and hlgner with other
grains. September gainea sugntiy on v-eember.
Provisions were easier on scattered sell
ing with deliveries of 4.000.000 pounds of

fashion. Cash premiums in Minneapolis
and Winnipeg were again lower, but con
sidering the amount of cash pressure on
these markets, the tone in reality was
strong and tha demand Very good. Private
estimates cut the crop down to 740.000,000
bushels and the trade seemed to take -the
reduction very seriously, appreciating that
with approximately 90.000,000 bushels al
ready cleared from the seaboard or sold
for shipment abroad, an acute situation
is likely to develop after the initial move
ment of spring wheat Is out of the way.
At any rate, it is very evident that the
builish situation is going to assert itself

COAL SHIPMENTS RESUME
Washington Operators Have Little
Trouble With Strikers.
SEATTLE, Sept. l. Shipments of
coal from the mine at Franklin are to
begin about the end of this week, ac
cording to a statement issued
by the Washington Coal Operators'
association, and by the end of next
week, it is expected coal will be taken
out of the mines at Burnett, Carbon
ado and Wiiesoh.
No trouble aside from jeers and cat
calls hurled at non-strikers has been
reported from any of the mines by
Sheriff Starwich. Wednesday was the
expiration of the period given by the
operators for their former employes
to vacate company houses. The op
erators are not planning wholesale
evictions, it was stated. .

ments Promises to Furnish
Work for Many Men.

-Less unemployment In Tacoma !
assured, according- to Mayor Rlddell,
who has under way a comprehensive
plan for financing; local Improvements
which, in turn, will permit the city to
start work on small Jobs by day labor.
In addition to furnishing- employ
ment for many Tacoma citlxens, the
financing plan will put Tacoma'B local
improvement bonds at par and im
prove the city's credit on local Im
provement bonds, the mayor said.
Under provisions of a law passed In
1917 the city Is permitted to estab
lish a fund for the purpose of guar
anteeing; to the extent of such funds
bonds issued against local improve
ment districts of this city. An ordi
nance providing for the guarantee of
such bonds has been introduced In the
city council.
To provide the required funds, tax
levies will be made from time to time
as other levies are made. Warrants
drawing Interest at 6 per cent may
be Issued againBt this fund to mee
any f'nancial liabilities accruing
against it.
In the opinion of Mayor Rlddell
this is one of the most construotlve
pieces of work the city of Tacoma
has undertaken. Passage of the ordi
nance and he says it is assured-
means the lifting of 20 per cent of
the costs of local improvements from
the shoulders of tarpsvsrs.

Makes Dairying: Profitable.
CHEHALIS. Wash., Sept. (Spe
cial.) On account of the decline In
the price of alfalfa hay eastern
Washington and Yakima country
farmers are buying stock cattle and
milch cows locally for shipment to
oentral and eastern Washington.
At the auction sals held by R.
Felby yesterday, Ban Balmoral! of
Curtis was the heaviest purchaser,
the cattle he purchased all being for
Yakima buyers.
Alfalfa prices are so low that
growers figure it more profitable
again to engage in tha dairy business,
a line which they, were tempted to
foresake some years ago owing to
the fact that selling their hay to the
west side farmers was more profit
able.
