SALEM. Or., Aug. U.-(Special.) The Ankeny hill detour on the route of the Pacific highway, a few miles south of Salem, which for several months past has been the cause of many complaints by auto mobile tourists, has been eliminated, according to announcement made to day at the office of the state highway department. Tourists en route south are now advised to proceed out Commercial street from Salem for a distance of approximately five miles, thence fol lowing the signs to Sunnyside school, and from there over the newly com pleted concrete pavement to Albany. Th.s route is practically all paved, and was said to be in first-class con dition. Travelers are advised to ob serve the ei&ns on the detour south of Salem (Uosedale road), especially in passing cars or after showers. The road between Salem and Al bany, via I ndtpendence and Buena Vista is in good condition. To gravel this route autoists should cross the Willamette river bridge at Salem, fol lowing the pavement west for a dis tance of six miles and turning south at Brunk's corners, through Indepen dence. Then follow the sigrns through Buena Vista to Albany. The follow ing summary, released by the state highway department today, indicates the condition of all the main traveled highways in the state: Pacific Highway. Portland-Oregon City Regular route of Parifio highway, via weet aide, paved and opfn to Oswego ; under construction and clofd from OBwefca to Oregon City. Traf fic should take Milwaukee street or Eifthty necund street, on the east side, out of 1'ortJand; paved from Portland entire dis tance to Oregon City ; no detours. Oregon City-Canby Paved. Can by -Aurora Under construction and clos'(t; detour over old road between these points; detour jjood condition. Aurora-Salem Vaved entire distance. Salem-Albany The Ankeny htll detour south of Salem has been eliminated. Traf f io should now go south on Commercial street out of 8alem and following' pave ment for about three miles and graveled road for two miles, turn to left at point 5.1 miles south, thence following signs tu Sunnyside scnool, and from there the newly completed concrete pavement to Albany. Paved except one mile in city of Jefferson and .one-half mile between Jefferson and Albany. Traffic is cau tioned to read and observe signs on the dutour south of K-ilsm (Rosedale road), especially in passing cars or after any pass! hie shower. The road between Salem and Albany via Independence and Huena Vista is in tfuod condition; crossing the Willamette river at Salem, following pavement wet for about six miles and turning south at Iirunke Corners, going through Indepen dence, turn at first Iff t-h.tnd road, about one mile south of Independence ani fal low sitfns through Buena Vista to Alb.Lny. Traffic to CoraIlis and points south on the west side highway can travel sautn out of Independence, following the main hiKhway for about 10 miles to a point oa.it of Wells, turning west and following the cross-road to a connection with the pavement north of Corvailis. This route Ls fair, with some rough places south of Independence, and Is a more direct route to Corvailis than through Buena Vista and Albany ; about eight miles of pavement north of Corvailis. Albany-Junction City Either the west or east side routes can be traveled. The east side route is considered the most desirable for through traffic, as it Is sev eral miles shorter, with no dusty detours. East side route Detour around grading operations between Shedd and Halsey, starting at south city limit of Aloany, to the right, following signs via the east aide Albany-Corvallia road through Peoria to Harris-burg, crossing the Willamette river at Harrisburg by a power furry. Good graveled road entire distance. West side route Good from Albany to Corvailis, detouring out of Corvailis as follows: West on Jefferson street, follow ing the Philomath road to Mount Union cemetery; thence south across Browns bridge over Marys river; thence south through Oakridge to Beaver creek and turning east four miles and rejoining the highway about seven miles sout'i of Cor vailis; follow the main highway from that point south through Monroe to Junction city; new pavement completed and nptn for traffic from Monroe to Junction City. Junction City-Cottage Grove, through Eugene fayed from Junction City ti Eugene and from there paved to Goshon highway closed at Goshen, detouring east across the Willamette river through Clo verdale and coming back across the river about one mile south of Creswell; thence to the old Pacific highway about two miles south of Creswell ; graveled road from here to Walker; paved from Walker to Suglnaw; due to paving operations be tween aginaw and Cottage Grove, all travel will be detoured through Delight valley, turning left at Saginaw and cross ing bridge, following signs and returning on Main street at Cottage Grove. Cottage Grove-Divide Pavement begins one mile south of Cottage Grove; no de tours. Divide-Oakland At a point about two miles south of Divide and also at a point ' approximately five miles north of Drain, 1 owing to pavement being under construc tion and no detour available, :t Is neces- ' aary that the road be closed except be tween the hours of 5 P. M. and 7:30 A. M., a few minutes at 10 A M., between 12 noon and 1 P. M., and for about 10 min utes at S P. M. ; pavement Is. being laid south from Divide and south from Anlauf. Excellent macadam -from Divide to a point 8.7 miles south of Yoncalla, and from there it is paved to Oakland. Oakland-Sutherlin At south city limits of Oakland, travel Is being detour j-1 over the old road, crossing the Southern Pacific tracks and under the Southern Pacific tracks about one mile south, rejolnln? the highway 1 miles south of Oakland ; paved from there to Sutherlin. Sutherlin-Rcsabur? Travel now being routod south from Sutherlin by the new pavement to Deady, opposite the Clark & Henery paving plants with good macadam from there for three-quarters of a mile. Hera detour over the Southern Pacific tracks to the east sidej and follow old road, returning over the Southern Pacific tracks at the grade crossing north of Wilbur. Rcst burg-Myrtle Creek Paving In prog ress immediately south of Roseburg; de tours used when available, sad when not available traffic is allowed to pass at .ll hiuri. The bridge over th; Umpqua Is being repaired and traffic may be held up for some time, but never for more than two hours at any one time. Myrtle Creek-Canyon ville Take detour via Riddle, which Is rough and slow. Canyonville-Oalesvllle Good macadam Galesvllle - Wolf Creek Paving under way at both ends; traffic passed at all hours. Wolf Creek-Grave Creek Paved. Grave Creek-Pieasant Valley (over Smith lull Macadam completed Pleasant Valley -Grants Pass Grading completed; being macadamized; open at all hours. Grants Pass, through Med ford and Ash land to California line, paved. Columbia River Highway. Astona-rortiana faved, except one mile through Rainier, which Is rough, but graveled. Portland-Hood River Paved. Hood River-Mosier 5.8 miles paved, re mainder good macaaam; open at all hours, Mosier-The Dalles Paving operations under way; road closed to travel from H A. Tualatin Highway. Portland-Forest Grove Paved. Forest Grove-Gaston Under construc tion; detour during working hours from Dilley to Gaston. Gaston-Yamhill Closed, account con struction to Cove Orchard; pavement from there to Yamhill. Yamhill-McMinnvUle Paved. McMinnviUe-TUIamook Highway. McMinnville-Sheridan Paved. Sheridan-Butler's store Under construc tion and rough : passable. Butler's store-Hebo Macadamized and In good condition. - Hebo-THlamook Under construction and rough to Beaver; paved Beaver to Hem lock ; under construction from Hemlock to Pleasant Valley, requiring use of old read, which is graveled and in fair condition; paved from Pleasant Valley to Tillamook. Corvailis-Newport Highway. ' Corvailis, through Philomath to Wren Good. Wren-Blodgett Traffic being detoured over Gellatly hill. Blodgett-Newport Under construction, but open at all hours; fair. Willamette Valley-Flore nee Highway. From Junction of Willamette valley Florence highway, with the Pacific high way at Horlon, over the high pasa road Fair. Horton-Blaehly Rocked and in fair condition ; low pass road closed due to construction work. Koteburg-Coo Bay Highway. Coos Bay Wagon Road County is doing; some work on this road and It is believed to be somewhat better than the route via Drain and Allegany; both are rough and slow. Medford-Crater Lake Highway. Both routes are now being used, via Central Point. Bybee bridge, Trail and McLcod to Prospect and via Eagle Point, Reese Creek, school house, Derby road to McLeod and Prospect. The. accommoda tions at the lake this year are ample. In addition to the lodge 74 tent houses are being erected, or.e-half of them being ready for use at this time. 1 Alsea Highway. Corvallls-Waldport Road good from Corvailis to Philomath and from there to Alsea; gravel macadam for the most part. Beyond Alsea the better road is around the point of Digger mountain Instead of over-the-hill road. Construction under way east and west of Tidewater; fair to Waldport. Care should be observed be tween Alsea and Waldport, as this Is gen erally a one-way road and unsurfaced. Stage lines are operating daily fron Cor vailis to Waldport. The Dalles-California Highway. The Dalles-Madras Road in fair shape through Dufur, Maupln, Bakeoven or Cri terion, Antelope to Madras. Madras-Crooked River New crushed rock road. Crooked River-Bend Newly graveled road in good condition. Bend-Allen's Ranch (20 miles) Cin dered and in fair condition. Allen's Ranch-Crescent (through La pine) Fair. Crescent-Lamm's Mill Via Fort Klam ath is the best route ; rough and dusty through the Jack Pines country to Sand creek ; fairly smooth from Sand creek, to Lamm's mill. Lamm's Mill-Barclay Springs Ferry discontinued; road rough and full of rocks and travel la advised to take west side of lake for balance of season. Barclay Springs-Algoma New macadam, Algoma-Klamath Falls Detour in fair condition over old Fort Klamath road. Klamath Falls-California State Line Macadamized to Merrill; balance Is splendid dirt road. John Pay Highway. Arlington-Condon Road by Shutler and Olex badly rutted by wheat hauling and very dusty; better road via Rock creek. Mikalo and Clem. Condon-Fossil Fair except miles be tween Thirty-mile and Mayville; still nec essary to use old road, new road being under construction. Fossil-Butte Creek summit Fair, mac adam under way, but road open. Summit-Ttlleys (mouth of Sarvice creek) Rough and slow. Tilleyi-Spray New road In fair condi tlon. Spray-Dayvllle Highway not yet open, as bridges are not yet under construction to get to Dayville, John Day, Canyon City or Prairie City, it is necessary to go by way of Spray, Monument, Long Creek and Mount Vernon or via Mitchell and Dayville from TiHeys. The latter road Is much better and travel is advised to take that route ; new road open about September 15. Dayville-Prairie City Road In good condition; last 20 miles good graveled road. Prairie City-Baker Road over mountain is open and In unusual summer condition Prairie City-Ironside Good county road, Ironside-Vale Main road In fair con dltion. but necessitating slow traveling tnrougn loose gravel at Jamieson; traffic can detour through apple orchards be tween Jamieson and Lancaster to avoid loose gravel; macadam from Brogan to Vale; very dusty in general and Quite rough. Old Oregon Trail. Pen diet on -La Grande Macadamized to top of Cabbage hill; rough county road to Hilpard; under construction from Hllgard to La Grande requiring careful driving. La Grande-Telocaset Paved or macad amised to Hot Lake; detour between Hot Lake and Union along foothills road or turn east across valley at point 2.1 miles east of the Sanitarium (valley road closed from 6 A. M. to 11 A. M. and from 12 A. M. to 5 P. M.) ; macadam under con struction between Union and Telocaset and no detour is available except through Ladd canyon, turning weet at end of pavement out of La Grande; detour fair. Telocaset-Baker Good. Baker-Huntington Fair county road to Nelson ; under construction between Nel son and Huntington and it Is suggested that travel use the detours until work Is finished, both for convenience or them selves and the contractors. Two detours are provided one via Sisley creek and the other Rye valley; Sisley creek is con sidered the better of the two. Huntington-Ontario Take ferry at Olds, keeping on Idaho side; rough for first seven miles, remainder good. La Grande-Joseph Highway. La Grande-Enterprise Paved to Island City; county road from Island City to El gin; under construction and fair from El gin to Minsm; under construction through Wallowa canyon; take hillside road at left at head of canyon and do not eross small wooden bridge at head of canyon; drive slowly near new construction and from one-half mile west of "Wallowa river bridge near Wallowa to ' the railroad crossing; from Wallowa to Enterprise the best road is via Evans, Alexander bridges, and the valley road to Enterprise: road over Lewis hill east of Lostlne closed. Enterprise-Josepti Fair; detours well marked. Central Oregon Highway. Bend-Burns Fair; take new road out of Bvnd for about 16 miles. Burns-Vale Rough and dusty ; best road through Crane, but fair through Drewsy; fair to Crane ; remainder rough and full of chuck holes. Vale-Ontario and Nyssa Getting ful of chuck holes and very dusty. Either the Hopsy grade and Ager or the Green Springs mountain road can be traveled; both are rough and dusty and in many places the traffic has caused rocks to become exposed. Klamath Falls-Lakeriew Highway. Klamath Falls-5 miles east of Olene Newly macadamized. Five miles east of Olene-Dairy Being graded and macadamised and rough in places with no detours. Dairy-Lakevlew Good. Takevirw-Laplna Highway. From Bend Good to Milllcan or Lsptne. Via Lake Abert Some construction work under way between Lakeview and Chan dler's station; Chandler's Station to head of Lake Abert, smooth ; for about 2a miles alo'ng the shore of Lake Abert the road is rough and" rocky; after leaving Lake Abert it is fair to Alkali; between Alkali and Butte the road is alternately rough and smooth; road from Butte to Gap ranch and beyond to Sage Hen hill is in- good condition for this season of the year; un der construction from Sage Hen hill to Burns and consequently rough in apots, but no detours. Recently the stage driver lost eight and one-half pounds of tacks approximately 24.000 between the Gap ranch and Burns, and tack inspection is therefore the chief sport in Burns at this time. One man found 32 tacks in his tires after making this trip. It is almost impossible for a car to go over this road without getting a puncture. Klamath Falls-Crater Lake Highway. Now open and in good condition with exception ef the last four miles before reaching the lake, which is a little muddy. Take the west side of upper Klamath lake. Klamath Falls-Weed, California. Very good for this time of year; county has maintenance crew at work and conse quently the road has a much smoother sur face than in previous years. Reduction in the city budget for 1922 as compared with expendi tures for 1921 total approximately Jl, 123.000. This means that the city tax rate for 1922 will be reduced ap proximately 4.6 mills. These figures were unofficially given out at the city hall today after results of the city councils budget hearings were totaled up by officials. The figures are nearly complete as far as the tax-supported departments are concerned, as only a few miscel laneous Items remain to ba consid ered. The reductions made by department heads in submitting their estimates totaled 1494, M0. The council then agreed ts cut the levy for the park system and the public library $49,000. The pay decrease will net a reduction of about $300,000 and other reduc tions made by the council in the hear ings have totaled, according to offi cials, $302,837. The total ot these de creases Is 11,146,377. From this sum, $19,895 is to be de ducted by items which were increased or added by toe council, leaving $1,- 126.482. Based on the assessed valuation of 1921, $244,832,956, this reduction would net a decrease in the tax levy of 4.6 mills. BIG BLAZE CONTROLLED Forest Fire in Montana .Reported Practically Checked. MISHOULA, Mont., Aug. Jl. Fire fighters today succeeded in establish ing patrol lines around the huge fire on Wolf creek, in the Flathead na tional forest of northwestern Mon tana. Reports to federal forest service headquarters here today said it had spread little in the last 24 hours. It burned over 2500 acres before It halted. HOUSE PASSES DYE BILL Democrats Solidly Oppose Measure Extending Embargo, WASHIXQTON, D. C, Aug. 11. The Longworth bill, to extend to Novem ber 27 the emergency dye embargo, which expires August 27, was passed today by the house and sent to the senate. The vote, 186 to 91, was along party lines, democrats opposing the bill al most solidly. Justice Parker to Go East. OLTMPIA, Wash., Aug. 11. (Spe cial.) Chief Justice ParKer, with Mrs. Parker, will leave this week for Cin cinnati to attend the meeting; of the American Bar association, to which he is a delegate. W. J. CAR HITS AUTO; 3 HURT MOTHER AXO OHILimEX ARE SHAKEN ASD BRUISED. Machine Hurled to Curb and De molished; Woman. Driver Suf fers Fracture of Skull.. Mrs. Frank Giaeehero, R. F". D. No. 2, Vancouver, and two children, Felix, aged 3, and Frances, aged 5, were thrown from the family automobile and the mother was severely injured when the machine was struck by a street car yesterday afternoon at Union avenue and Weidler street. The automobile was demolished. Mrs. Giaeehero was driving south on Union avenue, following closely behind a street car. When she reached Weidler street she turned to go east and was struck by a pass ins northbound car. The automobile was hurled to the curb and the oc cupants were severely shaken, bruised and cut. At St. "Vincent's hospital Mrs. Giaeehero was said to be suffering from a fractured skull and minor cuts and bruises on the face and head. Her condition was consiHered serious. The children were suffering from lacerations on head and face and ap parently were not badly hurt. The street car crew consisted of Edward Sch wenister, 1508 Albina ave nue, motorman, and C.
