THE MORNING OREGOXIAN, FRIDAY, JULY 22, 1921 13 V MURPHY IS BOOKED FOR G000 BATTLES Simonich and Dave Shade to Meet Denver Fighter. GOOD BOUTS EXPECTED Welterweight to Break Into Top Ranks of Boxing "Within xt Four Weeks. BY DICK SHARP. Frankie Murphy, the rugged Den ver welterweight, will have the op portunity of fighting his way into the topmost ranks of battlers in his divi sion on the Pacific coast within four weeks. His first opportunity to grab off the calcium will be his ten-round me lee with Joe Simonich at ililwaukie Wednesday night. Figuring that he should polish off Simonich, he will have the chance to cop the coast wel--tor crown when he battles Dave Shade in the ten-round main event of an all-starcard at Marshfield, Or., August 19, in the course of the state convention of the Elks. Murphy has begun to train in earn est for his coming scraps and is de termined to trim both of his oppo nents. If he gets over both Simon'ch and Shade the one remaining obstacle to a clear claim on the Pacific coast welterweight championship would, be Travis Davis of Everett, Wash. Although Davis has beaten a lot of classy performers, he failed to get better than a draw with Shade, Simonich or Claire Bromeo. Shade beat Bromeo and Simonich within a span of two weeks. Then again Murphy anJ Davis are not strangers, having fought a draw in Seattle about a year ago. The Denver boxer is the toughest proposition around 148 pounds that has ever fought here. His great fights with Johnny McCarthy, Alex Trambitas. Johnny Tillman, Stanley Willie, Dave Shade and Jack Edmund eon convinced the boxing fans that they were always in for a fight with Murphy on the card, and they have never yet been disappointed. Abe Mishkind. the stocky little Salt Lake 130-pounder, is training with Murphy. Mishkind will also swing in action on Wednesday night's card, meeting young Sam Langford of Seattle. If Abe gets over Lang ford he will be pitted against Joe Gorman on one of the forthcoming cards at Milwaukee. Langford has always given Gorman a hard fight and if Mishkind can hand him any thing he can be set down as a worthy performer. Bouts between Eddie Gorman and Kiel Zimmerman and Eddie Richards nd Johnny Bosoivitch are fn the making for the bill, but have not yet been clinchfed Matchmaker Ken dall. Gorman and Zimmerman have put up( two slashing battles, both ending 'in draws. Gorman had the better of the first engagement, while Zimmerman had a clear shade in the last meeting between the two. Dave Shade's broken left hand is well on the mend and he will take it out of the splints today. Light work outs in the gymnasium will be in or der this week and he expects to set tle down to some hard training for his coming fight with Frankie Mur phy at Marshfifeld by next week. Shade has three or four fights com ing up in August and September, every one a tough one. Mickey Dempsey, the popular young foatherweight, will lay off of all boxing until next fall, according to the lad's father, who does not want his youngster to overdo things at this stage of the game. Dempsey is Just a kid, and a rest will do him a world of good. He fought almost every week for a stretch and too much battling for a boy his age will not help the future any. Mickey is taking on weight all the time, and by next year should be a full-fledged lightweight. Johnny Flske. who fought here a number of times last winter, is now in Manila and will make his first start this week against one of the Filipino champs around his weight. Evidently Freddie Welsh, ex-lightweight champion, is not looking for anything tough, as he has picked on Bert Forbes of Seattle as his oppo nent for a fight in Calgary, Can., next month. Forbes has been sub jected to a lot of lacing the past year and Hud Ridley knocked him out in Vancouver not so long ago. ISLAND SWIMMER HONORED lxs Anjrcles Athletic Club Picks Miss Vernon for Team.
