The most Important wool sale of the
season was held at Shaniko yesterday. The
clip of that section of the state was of
fered for sealed bids and the sale attracted
all the buyers and representatives of for
eign "and eastern mills. Five hundred
thousand pounds were sold. Prices on
good ool ranged from 13 to 20 's cents at

wool at yesteraay s sale. seven ouyers
purchased 22 lots of fine wool, amounting
to 260.000 pounds, at prices ranging from
18 to 20 ; cents. Among those selling their
clips were Ronald MacDonald of Antelope,
who disposed of 21,000 pounds at the top
price of 201 cents. This lot was bought
by Mr. Sharp, representing the Boston

Three lots of coarse wool, amounting to
about 123,000 pounds, were sold for 13
cents, and the remainder of 123,000 pounds
averaged 16 cents.
There has been no material change In
the general wood, situation this week. The
eastern trade is closely watching opera
tions in the west, where most of the busi
ness Is now being done. Prices are on
steady basis and apparently the unettit
ment of the securities market has not
affected wool as it has some other com
module.
The eastern mills continue generally well
occupied on old contracts and duplicate
orders and prices are fully maintained.
Spinners and combers report little change
In the situation. Some of the handlers of
foreign tops report continued demand for
English fine tops at up to about (1 for

Under the market for domestic descrip
tions. Nevertheless, the combers are able
to do some business and have been in the
market for fine and fine medium wools of
the territory types at about 70 cents, clean
basis. The latest figures of the govern
ment on wool consumption for the month
of April at 46.000,000 pounds bring the
industry back to normal consumption,
which has undoubtedly been maintained
fully during May and June.
In noting the effect of the tariff law on
the industry, the Merchants' National bank
of Boston says:
'The importance of the emergency tariff
act Just passed, and of the permanent act
to supersede It later, is Indicated by the
rapid increase in imports of manufactures
of wool during the first four months of
this year. Imports in April eompard with
those in January were, respectively, as fol

It is expected that the pressure of this for
eign competition will be reduced to some
extent by the emergency tariff act, and
more particularly by the permanent tariff
act which is now pending in congress.
"Exports of manufactures of wool have
continued to decline in recent months,
reaching new low levels in April."
Berries Cheaper on Early Market,
Strawberries sold lower on the early
farmers' market at $1.10 1.40 a crate, but
on the street good shipping stock held
steady at $1.75 a crate.
Several cars of cantaloupes and water
melons came in. The demand for them
was only fair and prices were unchanged.
Honey-dew melons were quoted at $3

BCTTER IMPORTS TO BE RESTRICTED
Good Demand for Product for Storage
and Current Vse.
The week showed some increase In the
quantity of cream delivered, says the
weekly produce review of Swift & Co. of
Chicago. Prices remained generally un
changed. There is a good demand for
butter, both for storage and current use.
It is thought that the duty of 6 cents a
pound on butter will restrict importations
to some extent. Market quotations do not.
in all cases, represent the selling price of
butter, because only a small percentage of
the arrivals from centralized creameries
will grade standards, and under-scoring
butter is sold at a discount
Quality of butter manufactured could be
improved if more attention were given to
the care and handling of the cream on the
part of the producers and if the cream
produced was marketed more frequently.
It is important. If cream is to bring top
prices, that it be clean warm cream
ahculd never be mixed with cold cream.
The higher temperature throughout the
producing sections is affecting the qual
ity of eggs marketed, although there has
been little change in the market quota
tions. To secure the highest prices, eggs
should be gathered daily, kept in a cool
place and marketed frequently. It should
be remembered that roosters are not nec
essary for egg production, that infertile
eggs, produced during the summer months,
have better keeping quualities and result
in better prices.
A larger volume of poultry was mar
keted during the week, resulting in slightly
lower prices. The supply of young chick
aa is increasing and bringing good prices.
LOCAL BrTTER PRICES MAINTAINED
California) Shipping Demand for Cnbes
Continues Active.
The cube butter market ruled firm
with further buying for shipment to Cali
fornia. The bulk of the sales were made
at 80 cents. The local movement in prints
was rather slow and but for the shipping
demand for cubes, present prices might
not hold.
There was not much change In the egg
situation. The market now Is purely a
local one and on the average the supply
qusls the demand. Current receipts gen
erally sold at 23624 cents.
