WINTER WHEAT THRIVING
Conditions More Favorable Xow
for Orchard and Smalt Fruits.
Hop Cultivation Begins.
Grain crop prespecta in Oregon re on
the whole very food, according to the
weekly crop and weather report of the
local weather bureau. At the beginning of
the past week the weather waa moderately
cool, with scattered ahowera, and aome
frost. About the middle of the week the
weather became fair and warm, the tem
perature rising higher than at any prev
ious time this season. As the week closed
cool, cloudy, showery weather again pre
vailed. Farm work made satisfactory
advance, but la atlll backward in many
places. Vegetation made good growth.
but is still behind the average season over
considerable areas.
Winter wheat is showing poor color In
few western localities, but is generally
good, and Is particularly good in the prin
cipal wheat -growing counties. Some dam
age la being done by aphis In Douglas
county. Seeding of spring wheat Is Hear
ing completion. Early-sown spring wheat
and oata are making good growth, and
have been benefited by rain. Winter oats
re heading in Jackson county; rye is
beading In Douglas county, and is nearly
ready to head in Umatilla, county, nam
ing of corn is becoming general.
Conditions have been favorable for frul:
during the week, but owing to unfavorable
Weather earlier there la a heavy drop ot
pears, cherries snd prunes. Apples are
setting well. Strawberries are becoming
more plentiful In Douglas county and a
few have been marketed in Umatilla
connty. Aphlds are causing some Injury
to spples and prunes.
Alfalfa and clover showed quick re
sponse to the Increased warmth; some al
falfa has been cut in Jaekson and Jose
phine counties. Range feed is drying up
In some localities, but Is generally abund
ant, and has been freshened by recent
rains.
Shearing ot sheep is nearing completion
In western Counties and la, well sdvanced
elsewhere. All stock Is doing well.
Planting of potatoes continues; early po
tatoea are budding in Jackson county.
Some local damage waa done by frost.
Gardens are Improving, but still somewtfv

INCREASED BUTTER MAKE GENERAL

The volume of cream delivered to cream
ries Is larger than last week and is con
aiderably heavier than a year ago. says
the weekly produce review of Swift & Co.
of Chicago. Prices are generally unchanged
for butter and butterfat.
Bggs are showing the effect of warme

tendency In the market the last few daya
Announcement of the warehouse figures

4.802.000 cases, as compared with 2,135,000
cases last year, showing an excess of

Influence. April and May egg are of the

placed In. storage. As summer weather is
approached eggs have not the satisfactory
quality which they ahoweed In the cooler
spring months, and the demand for stor
age is therefore limited. It is of th ut
most Importance that eggs be gathered
daily, kept In a cool place and marketed
frequently.
Tbp poultry supply Is normal fot this
season of the ysar and prices show little
change throughout t. country. A few
broilers are beginning to show up on the
various markets, but due to the generally
lower value of other foods and the large
stock left in storage last year, prices ar?
considerably under a year ago. It la not
expected the demand for snall broilers will
be very active for some months.
VO CHANGE MADE IN WHEAT BIDS
Business Is Slow at All Points Coarse
Grains Higher.
There was not much business doing
yesterday In the wheat market here or in
the country. Bids were unchanged from
Tuesday.
The coarse grain market was steady to
firm and generally quiet. Offers for oats
were fiOcOfl higher and May brewing
barley was up SO centa Corn bids ranged
from 60 centa lower to 50 centa higher.
John lnglis reported on Kanaaa crop
conditions: "Okley to Wilson, crop un
certain, promises 10 bushels. Through
Russell, Ellis, Trego to Oakley. 70 per
cent may be cut If weather is favorable..
Doubtful If balance will pay for cutting.
Borne streaks of fair wheat; occasional
fields may run 11 to 20 bushels Blowing
and frost damaged the crop."
Crop- conditions in Missouri and Ne
braska are also unfavorable.
Terminal receipts, in ears, were re
ported by the Merchants Exchange as

Declines In Industrials Result
From Dividend Cats and Omis
sions; Money Market Firm.
NEW YORK, May 18. Stock trading to
day presented two divergent aspects. Rails
were active and strong at gross advances
of 1 to 3 points, while numerous industrials
and specialties irregularly extended recent
losses.
The movement In transportations had Its
inception in the announcement that the
United States railway labor board had de
cided on a downward revision of wages,
Junior or secondary issues benefited almost
as much as the more seasoned or dividend-
paying shares.
Heavineas of Industrials was due mainly
to doubt respecting the action of the
Republic Iron & Steel directors on the
quarterly dividend. Announcement of the
absolute omission came after the end of
the session, but Republic closed unchanged,
Similar Incidents included the passing
of the Pacific Mail semi-annual dividend
nd a 50 per cent cut in the quarterly
dividend of Cuban-American Sugar.
Oils, especially Mexicans, were heavily
traded in, but Mexican Petroleum finished
at a nominal gain. Sales were 675,000
shares. '
The money market followed Us undevlat
lng course of the last few days, all call
loans being made at 7 per cent, although
that figure waa shaded In the open market.
Leading foreign exchanges were strong,
but Dutch. Italian, Spanish and German
remittances eased.
There were few features to the bond
market, trading falling off somewhat from
yesterday. Changes in domestic and for
eign issues, including the liberty group,
were mostly toward moderately lower lev
els. Total sales, par value, $9,875,000.

EGG BUYING PRICE IS REDUCED
Butter Market Is Finn, but No Higher
en Extras.
The butter market was firm, but buyers
for storage stHl held their bid st 25 cents
for extras. There was Inquiry from the
north at -about the same basis. Another
car of sweet butter will bs shipped to Los
Angeles today.
The egg trade was slack. Most of the
storage operators have put away all they
want and with the subsidence of the de
mand the market weakened yesterday.
The general cash buying quotation was
18 cenlj.
Poultry of all kinds was scarce and the
market was firm. Hens sold at 19 to 27
cents, according to size. The demand
for country dressed meats was light and
prices were no mors than steady..
Weather Affects Strawberry Trade.
The weather again was against the
strawberry trade and the day's receipts
failed to clean up. Florins were quoted
t I3.25fr3.50. The best southern Oregon
berries sold at $5.255.50.
Kew potatoes were firmer because ot

Lambs Decline Quarter With Car
load Sales at $7.25 Hog
Market Is Steady.
The cattle market was a alow affair
yesterday. The supply was good, with
five, loads : held over from Tuesday and
more in -during the day, but demand was
lacking, particularly on good quality stock,
and buyers were trading fully a dollar
lower on gfass cattle, . The hog market
held steady at the old range of prices, but
sheep and lambs were weak. Carload
lots of prime lambs sold at $i,25, a de
cline of a quarter, and established the
market's top at that price.
Receipts were 431 cattle, 2 calves, 169
hogs and 1024 sheep. The day's sales
were as . f ol lows :

RAIN BENEFITS CROPS
.
Harvest - Prosiiects in Jackson
County Sever Better.
GOLD HILIi, Or, May. 18. (Spe
cial.) A copious fall of rain visited
the entire north portion of Jackson
county Tuesday, which is beneficial
to crops. Less alfalfa was caught
cut in the fields of this section than
further south in the valley.
Crops generally have never had a
better prospect in this district. A
large acreage of wheat and corn has
been planted and all new acreage
under the Gold Hill irrigation "district
canal is being sown to alfalfa.
A heavy crop of local strawberries
are crowding the California berries
out of the market and commanding

Wheat It was a strong; market through
out the session, with a greater disposition
to recognize the strong situation that would
surely develop should anything happen to
the crop. The reports today from Kan
sas and Nebraska were very unfavorable.
The cash demand was good at high prices
and country offerings to arrive reported as
moderate. From a supply and demand
standpoint, this can be analyzed as -any
thing but bearish. There is but one argu

ment: that is the possibility of legislative
Interference - with marketing conditions
which would result In tightening up of
loans against purchases in the country
without a hedging market and would un
doubtedly spell lower prices. Financial
