a telegram yesterday announcing the
result of the election of officers of the
-American Greeters. which organiza
tion closed its annual national con
vention in New Orleans yesterday.
Louis Lucas, of the Hotel New Rich
mond. Seattle, was elected national
nresident. Miss E. Newland of the
LaSelle. Chicago, was elected national
president of the greeters' auxiliary,
succeeding Mrs. Victor Brandt of Port
land. Mrs. R. Z. Duke, of the Rainier
LaSalle. Chicago, was elected national
vice-president, and Mrs. Funk, of the
New Richmond, t-cattle, was elected
secretary and treasurer. Delegates

Armory Being Altered. Tn order
to accommodate the various national
guard units provided by recent
changes in the tables of organization
the Multnomah county armory is
undergoing extensive alterations. A
large number of partitions have been
taken out and new ones put in so
that each of the local companies will
have suitable headquarters. Guard
companies now housed at the local
armory, include regimental head
quarters company, oiie battalion neaa-
quarters company, service company,
one company of engineers, battery A,
field artillery, a medical and a
quartermaster corps detachment and
companies B. E. F, G and H. It is ex
pected that the changes In the armory
will be completed in about two or
three weeks.
Piedmont Clean-up Started. A
general clean-up of the Piedmont
residential district has been instituted
by the Hayden Island Improvement
club to include improvements in the
sewer system. Piedmont park walks
and street railway and telephone com
pany holdings in that district. Comr
mittees were appointed to confer with
the park commissioner and the public
utility companies concerning the
work. At last Monday's meeting a
committee of 25 was appointed to
present Hayden island as the 1925 fair
site. The next regular meeting will
be held May 18 at the Peninsula "park
clubhouse.
Sewer Protest Report to Be Made.
City Commissioner Barbur will re
port to the city council next WedneS'
day morning on the result of the re-
monstrances filed with the city against
the Foster road trunk sewer The 30
day remonstrance period on this
project ends today and an immediate
check will be made to determine the
percentage of the opposition. One
month ago the council adopted
resolution of intention to Improve
Foster road and construct the sewer.
City Commissioners Mann and Bige
low voted against the resolution at
that time.
Relief Ship Scheduled J. J. Hand
saker, state director of near east
relief, started last night for eastern
Oregon, where he will visit Pendleton,
Baker and La Grande in the interest
of China-near east relief ar.d the food
and clothing collection now in prog
ress. A relief ship will leave the Pa
cific coast early in June, going direct
ly to the near east with a cargo of
western foodstuffs and used cloth
ing. Mr. Handsaker said that toys
would be included In the relief cargo.
Knights to Go to Arlington. Ab-
duhl-Atef templeof the Dramatic Order
Knights of Khorassan. the sunshine
rank of the Knights of Pythias, will
caravan to Arlington tomorrow with
its band, patrol and the divan, where
it will confer rank on 150 members of
the Pythian order attending the dis
trict convention in that city. Many
Pythians of rank from this state and
the state of Washington will attend
this meeting. The knights band of
Hood River also will make the trip.
Two Damage Suits Filed. Damage
suits were filed in the circuit court
yesterday by R. O. Naustdal, who
asked $5400 of A. Otte for injuries
received when hit by Otte's auto
mobile at Williams avenue and Stan
ton street, February 3, 1921, and by T.

with ideas that the Ideals of this
country could be overturned by force
should be sent back whence they
came and only those admitted -who
were ready to abide by the traditions
of this democracy. He further as
serted the employers and employes
of the country are getting closer
together on the big problems which
have made for unrest in the past
and declared this to be important in
the working out of the destiny of the
nation. ,
C. E. S pence Also Sneaks.
C. E. SDence. master of the state
grange, spoke briefly of the prob
lems of the farmers of the state. He
said that when the farmers and the
laboring men go down the line arm
in arm farming will pay.
R. F. Clark, president of Pacific
university, invited the members, of
the club to go to Forest Grove on
May 20 to attend a pageant by the
students.
Music was furnished by the Pacific
University auartet. consisting of
Francis E. Taylor, Arthur C. Jones,
Norman C. Mace and Willis L. Cady.
The quartet sang a number' of selec
tions and Arthur c. Jones sang
couple of solos. Miss Erma A. Tay
lor accompanied the quartet.

Two Women and Man Admit Their
Guilt Third Man Denies Com
plicity, fourth Fugitive.
Three members of the narcotic ring
that looted the Vancouver barracks
hospital of morphine, heroin and
opium worth a fortune at retail prices
pleaded guilty yesterday before
Federal Judge Bean and were sen
tenced. A third alleged member was
arraigned and entered a plea of not
guilty.
Estelle Clark pleaded guilty to
having had stolen government pro
perty in her possession and was sen
tenced to 30 days in the county jail.
She received the stolen narcotics and
kept them for a time for the other
members of the ring.
Joseph J. Boyle, a soldier, and
Coral R. Everett pleaded guilty to
the same charge and were sentenced
to serve six months in jail.
Phil Shipman, accused of compli
city, denied any part and was held
on $500 bail. He will be tried later,
although the date has not been set.
George H. Nelson, another alleged
member of the ring, is still a fugi
tive.
Howard Brown, who is held by the
army authorities at Vancouver, and
Boyle will both face court-martial by
the army.
