Wheat Values React With Eastern
Change and Bujrers Send Lower
Offers Into Country.
Flour prices have been advanced be
cause of the recent sharp gains in wheat
values, although the wheat market
acted yesterday. Patent flour was raised
40 cents to the basis of 18 tW for the best
family grades, bakers are op 50 cents to
$7.25 7.73 and valley floura were lifted
75 cents.
With the seversal in the Chicago wheat
market, bids sent into the country were
reduced 5 cents from those prevailing at
the opening of the week. There was not
much selling by farmers when prices were
going up and the trade looks for a freer
movement now that the market has
started the other way. At the Merchants'
Bxchange session wheat bids were 2 to S
cents lower than Tuesday. . Coarse grain
offers were unchanged. t

Belgium, Bulgaria. Spain. France, Fin
land. Great Britain. Norway, Roumania
and North Africa, while in Poland and the
United States a slight decrease is indi

The prospects of both cereals may be con

already mentioned. While the outlook In

YtTXTEK WHEAT MAKES GOOD START
Seeding ot Spring Grain Retarded by Wet
Weather. ,
Crop conditions in Oregon for the week
are reported by the weather bureau as
follows:
Good growing weather prevailed In the
southwestern counties; elsewhere It was
lather too - cool, with deficient sunshine.
Precipitation occurred frequently in north
western counties and in some eastern lo
calities and at the close tot 'the week
general rains occurred over tne western
half of the state. Some snow fell In the
mountains. Freezing weather occurred In
eastern and central counties on April 30.
Farming operations made good progress
except in northwestern counties, where
they were delayed by rain. Irrigation has
been In progress in eastern counties for
acme time.
Winter wheat Is doing well. Seeding of
spring wheat, oats and barley continues,
but was somewhat retarded In northwest
ern counties by wet weather. Early sown
spring grain is making a good start. Little
corn has been planted, but early sweet
corn is coming up in Douglas county.
Considerable damage to peaches, apricots,
prunes and apples in southeastern counties
resulted, from .the frosts of the last two
weeks. In Marion county loganberries are
fbund to have suffered some winter-killing.
Prunes are dropping rather heavily In
western counties. The calyx spray is being
applied to apples. The weather has been
unfavorable for pollination of late fruits
In northwestern counties. Aphlds are caus
ing some damage to prunes.
Grass is making good to excellent
growth, though in some eastern countiel
there is complaint of Insufficient moisture.
Alfalfa Is doing well In southern counties
but elsewhere seeds warmer weather. I

SAN FRANCISCO PRODUCE MARKET
NEW YORK, May 4 The trend of
today's stock market was somewhat dis
appointing to those who expected deal
ings would be governed by the 20 per
cent wage reduction announced by the
United States Steel corporation yesterday.
Steels and kindred issues were quite active
and firm to strong at tne outset, but
yielded in prominence and strength later
to other stocks which derived . their chief
support from .profeaeional- sources.
The steel wage cut was popularly re
garded as a constructive measure. Its
significance,, it was argued, however, would
have carried greater weight if attended
by a downward revision of prices.
United States Steel common scored an
early advance of nearly one point, most
of which was cancelled at midday. It
made a new high quotation in the final
hour on short covering and closed at a
gain ot U points at 85 H. the top price
of the year to date. Independent steels
and some rubber specialties and shippings
were conspicuous at gains of one to four
nnlnts.
There were active dealings In rails
especially the. lower priced or reorganised
properties, at advances of one to three
points, but Investment rails mads less up
ward progress.
Sales were 800.000 shares.
Call money opened and heH at 6H per
cent, but loaned freely at o per cent 10
the outside market. '
British, French and most other ex
changes eased, Dutch and Italian rates
proving among the few exceptions.
The bond market was mixed, some rails
and foreign flotations strengthening, while
other issues. Including the liberty groups,
were lrregvflar. Total sales, par value,
$11,375,000. .
