The French steamer Mont Cervin.
of the line operated by Norton, Lilly
& Co. to the Mediterranean ports, ar
rived in the Columbia river at 9
o'clock yesterday morning; from Vic
toria, B. C. Though her outward
cargo had not been fixed last night,
negotiations were sufficiently ad
vanced to warrant C. D. Kennedy.
Portland agent for Norton, Lilly &
Co.. to issue instructions last night
for the vessel to come up to the
Eastern & Western Lumber company's
mill to take aboard -dunnage. The
natural Inference is that she will take
a cargo of wheat or flour from Port
land to the Mediterranean.
Vessels operating in this French
line the Societe Uenerale de Trans
ports Marltimes a Vapeur include
California, Puget sound and British
Columbia ports in their calling list,
but Portland has in the past furnished
the bulk of the out-bound cargo,
which has consisted principally of
wheat and flour.
Other steamers of the line, accord-'
!ng to the latest available reports,
are disposed as follows: Mont Cenis,
arrived at Buenos Aires February 5
(mm Marseilles: Mont Peivoux, ar
rived at Marseilles January 16 from
Montevideo; Mount Berwyn (British
steamer), arrived at Barcelona reD
ruarv 1 from Marseilles.
The next of the fleet to come here,
fMirm-ino- the Mont Cervin. will be
the Mont Pelvoux. which will go from
Varsplilps to Cuba to load sugar for
British Columbia, and come here after
discharging at Vancouver or Victor!

Steamer C. II. Livingstone on Way
to Inaugurate Service.
The 9400-ton steamer C. H. Living
stone which will inaugurate the
coast-to-coast service of the Congress
line between Portland and other Pa
cific ports and Baltimore and Mobile,
will reach this port early in April and
depart from Portland on April 9 on
the return voyage, accordling to a
corrected sailing schedule issued yes
terday by 'O. It- Theiring, Portland
manager for A. M. Gillespie, Inc.,
agents for the Congress line.
The C. H. Livingstone departed
from Baltimore on March 3 for Los
Angeles, San Francisco, Portland and
Seattle, via Mobile. Ala., and Is sched
uled to leave Mobile next Saturday.
She will be followed to this coast by
the steamer Anna E. Morse, which
was scheduled to leave New York
yesterday and to depart from Phila
delphia on March 23, after calling at
Baltimore. Ports of call in the east
bound service will be Savannah.
Charleston. Boston and other gulf
and Atlantic coast ports as induce
ment offers.
A M. Gillespie, Inc., recently
opejied an office here at 1113 Board
of Trade building, in charge of G. R.
Theiring, who is-assisted by W. P.
Bowling as freight agent.
Japanese Inspect Terminals.
T. Konno, a representative of the
Mitsubishi bank. Ltd.. of New York,
inspected Portland's terminal facili
ties yesterday in company with K.
Gotto, a young Japanese nobleman,
who has been studying in this coun
try, and is now returning to his home.
The visitors were conducted through
the various terminals by Harry Cope
land of the port traffic bureau. The
Japanese left last night for Seattle,
where they will make a similar in

with a party of Seattle friends, made a

(Special.) The Blue Funnel liner Protest

The Japanese steamer TaJIma Mara,
coming from Hongkong, will arrive tomor

Captain Wright of the ateamer 8teel
Maker has devised an electrical appliance
for launching life boats. It waa said that
the device will launch a boat with more
accuracy and speed than any other method
in use. The (jnlted States steamboat In
erectors stationed on Puget sound were
favorably impressed with the invention
and an official test will be made at Seattle
in a few days before the Hteel Maker pro'
eef-ds to Portland to complete her cargo
with wheat.

Vessela of the North Atlantic and West
ern Steamship company In the future will
link Seattle and Portland. Me., with
fast intercoastal service, according to rep
resentatives of the Pacific Steamship
company. Pacific coast agent for the com
pony. Portland Me., was recently made
a regular port of call on the Atlantic for
vessels of the fleet.
On her annual visit to Seattle, the light
house tender Cedar. Captain J. W. Lead-
better, which serves as a supply ship for
lighthouses along the Alaska coast and
guards the aids to navigation from Dixon
entrance to the Prlbilof islands of the
Bering sea. arrived In Seattle yesterday
from Ketchikan, her station in the north.
For the first time in years. Captain
Louis Knafllch, old-time Seattle ship
owner, will devote the summer to work
ins his claims In the Goodnews bay dis
trict, Bering sea, Alaska. Almost invari
ably he passes the summer season as com
rounder of one of his o.wn vessels in the
St-bttle-Bering sea routes.
SAN FRANCISCO, March 8. (Special.)
On her maiden voyage across the Pacific
to the Hawaiian islands and carrying pas
sengers hailing from 16 different states
in the union, the Hawkeye State sailed
this afternoon at 4 o'clock. She had only
3"j0 tons of freight in her holds and was
sitting high in the water. The passenger
list numbered 1UB. which is only lair, con
sidering the accommodations.
The Hawkeve State inaugurated new
triangular service in the passenger-carry-ins
line from this coast. She will go to
the Islands, return here and go east to
Baltimore.
Twelve hundred and fifty-four cases of
e.T.r8. ao dozen to the case, arrived here
today on the steamer Rose City from Port
land. There were ai.fJ-'O dozon eggs, in
hi it shinment was swallowed into Sa
Franch-co's ravenous maw without a rlppl
on the market.
The offices of the International Mer
chant Marine association have refused to
deny the report that the Panama-Pacific
line is to be revived, according to informa
tion received here today. The report was
circulated here that the Finland and the
Kroonland would be taken off the Atlantic
run from Now York to Antwerp ana wouia

business.
To be repaired here following her
grounding on an island off San Pedro re
cently, the General Petroleum company

On account of fog this morning, the
West Katan did not sail as soon as had
been expected. The vessel was scheduled
to depart at H A. M. but was held up
until 10 o'clock before she got away for
Kurope via ports. The Henry T. Scott was
looked for today from San Francisco and
the San Diego will be due Thursday from
Kun Perlt-rt.
The Scott wll! load a full cargo of bulk
wheat here and the San Diego will take
lumber.
The F. S. Loon was expected to sail to
nlcht for San Francisco via ports and the
Rydr Hanify was due to shift down sound
to complete her cargo lor lamorma.
The West Togus of the Nawseo line will
be due here tomorrow morning to load
a part cargo of lumber for Atlantic coast
ports.
PAN" PEDRO, Cal., March 8. (Special.)
With a cargo valued at more than $.'to,
OOrt, loaded here and consisting of citrus
fruits, the steamer Liberator sailed tonight
for New York. The fruit was shipped by
the California Fruit Growers' exchange. It
was transported to the docks of the steam
er in the outer harbor by trucks from th
interior. The net saving on the cargo from
here in freight charges over the method
of shipping by rail waa estimated today
to he STOoft. Five carloads will be dis
charged in Philadelphia and the remainder
in New York, where the fruit will be sold
at auction.

A busy day is In store for the Ore-pron-Pacific
company next Tuesday,
when steamers of three different
lines represented by this company
will arrive at once. Those expected
here on that day are the Kinderdyk
of the Holland-American line, the
Seiyo Maru of the Toyo Kisen Kalsha
and the steam schooner Tiverton o(
the Charles Nelson line.
The Dutch steamer Kinderdyk Is
coming; from ports of continental
Europe and the United Kingdom via
San Pedro, San Francisco, Puet
sound and British Columbia, with
some inward freight to discharge
here. She will also load out 6000 tons
of wheat or flour, 3000 each for Kerr,
Gifford & Co. and the Houser Inter
ests. The Seiyo Is one of the trans-Pacific
passenger and freight liners in
the Toyo Kisen Kaisha traiangrular
service. She is coming: to Portland
from ports on the west coast of South
America and California, and will load
about 5000 measurement tons of
freight here for Yokohama, Kobe,
Moji and Shanghai.
The Tiverton is bringing; general
freight from San Francisco in the
coastwise service of the Charles Nel
son line. She will take lumber from
the Columbia river back to San Fran
cisco.
