A total of 16.03ft.(tt8 pounds of wool
produced in Oregon durmir th year

ment at commerce. Th is a decrease, a:
compared with the 18.fe4I.Mi- pounds pro
duced tn Orcein during thai year liHW, th
year of the preceding census.
The sa e of a quantity of central Oregon
wool to a Bo ion firm at current market
rates, several purchasers of mutton shep
-wool at low quotations and a few deals
.made by Or son mills make up the volume
f buhinis done Here in the pat week.
There are do signs of the market toon
regaining its old-time activity and, until
there ia a general resumption of mill oper
ations In the east, the market will not be
on a healthy basis. It la probable that
a considerable part of the wool held In
storage here will be moved to eastern
distributing centers.
According to trade advices from Chi
cago, there has been a larger volume of
bumes transacted there than In the last
c.ne or ten months. The Improvement is
attributed to the fact that while mills are
topping for values they ar4 coming Into
the markvt quite liberally and anticipating
tbeir requirements or else providing for
immediate needs. Medium wools appear
to be in greatest demand, and some of the
weaker points in the s-ale of wool prices
bav beca strengthened by the renewed
demand.
The wool pultoriea at the stockyards are
cow operating about normal, and In re
cent weeks have alo experienced a revival
of buines. Starting about three weeks
a to. several of the houses enjoyed the
best business in about stx months, so
that January showed the best record since
June. The propects are that this demand
will continue, according to one of the lead
ing executives, who points out that not
alone is U the prospect of a tariff that is
stimulating buying, but also the fact that
many buyers, including th American
Woolen company, have not been acti ely
In the market for a number of months.
In the Philadelphia market the volume
of business is still small, but wool dealers
report that Inquiry is Increasing and em
braces a wider range of wools than before ,
Buyers are visiting the market in larger
i. umbers and are inspecting stocks of the
gra es most likely to be in request for
l.uj.nea? which the mills expect to fle
veiop later on It appears, however, that
there is little tendency shown by buyer?
to anticipate their needs, and orders are
being placed for -uch wools only as are
necessary for current or nearby produc
tion. One feature of recent trading Is
that inquiry has to do principally with
either fine wools or low-grades, the latter
havinc heretofore been neglected for
months. It appears as if the medium
grades are attracting no attention at
present, although as far aa prices are
concerned, medium wools are proportion
ately aa cheap as- the other grades.

COLO WEATHER AFFECTS EGG TRADE
Freeh Cube Butter Very Scarce and Sellers
A.k Higher Price,.
Most of the old shipping orders for eggs
that were on the market have evidently
been filled, as buyers were less keen to
take bold yesterday, and some were In
clined to unload their stocks. The colder
turn of the weather, however, has given
a firmer tone to the market locally. In
dependently of conditions in the east. On
the street there were resales at around
is cents, though most of the large buyers
bid only 25 cents for shipments from the
country.
The butter market was In a healthy
condition so far as prices were concerned.
There were few sales of cubes, which were
very scarce, and actual values were diffi
cult to obtain. Holders of fresh extras
asked anywhere from 46 to 48 cents,
though few buyers seamed disposed to
consider these prices. There is no Indi
cation of early relief in the way of a
larger supply. Storage butter was also
firmer and more active.
There was no change In the poultry sit
uation. Receipts were moderate and prices
firm, with a good demand. Country dressed
meats were unchanged.

NEW YORK, Feb. 16. The market for

Hill Shares, Motors and Steels Are
Prominent In Advance Lib
erty Bonds Steady.
NEW YORK, Feb. 16. The uncertain
course of prices in today's sluggish stock
market expressed in greater measure the
conflicting views of professional opera
tors.. Public Interest or support was re
stricted to the better known investment
issues in the transportation division.
Heaviness of certain issues, notably
Baldwin Locomotive, General Motors, Al
lied Chemical, South Porto Rico Sugar and
several equipments was directly traceable
to poor earnings, pressing financial needs
and reduced dividends.
Some of the oil Issues recorded further
recossions on additional price cuts, while
food shares improved moderately as
schedules for refined products were re
vised upward.
Steels and kindred shares had their
periods of comparative strength, but the
weekly reviews again emphasized the de
tached attitude of consumers toward pre
vailing prices and referred to the likc'l
bcod of further curtailment of production.
Average prices were at highest levels
In the last hour, call money rates then
falling from 7 to 6 per cent and provoking
the usual short covering. Seasoned rails,
notably Northern Pacific and Great North
ern, as well aa motors and steels, were
most prominent, a firm tone ruling at the
close. Sales were 555,000 shares.
Dealers reported a fair degree or ac
tivity in foreign exchange, all leading
remittances enhancing recent gains. Ex
ceptions were provided by the Scandina
vian centers, which were heavy,, especially
Denmark and Norway.
Liberty issues were the only steady
features of the bond market, other do
mestic as well as international issues eas
ing variably. Total sales, par value, $12,-650,000.
