False Arrest Alleged in Suit.
Damages for alleged false imprison
ment are asked In the suit of Harry
Maizel against the Pacific American
Metal company and Max Albert, now
on trial be-fore Circuit Judge Belt.
The plaintiff asks $5750, part of which
is for attorney's fees, part for loss
of business and the remainder for
damage to his reputation. Maizel was
taken in custody last May on a war
rant charging larceny by bailee. This
is the first case to be heard during
this session by Judpro Belt, who is
here from Dallas to fill in on the
circuit bench for the remainder of
the week.
Portland Man Loses bt O.vb Vote.
According: to word received here
yesterday final count by the Harvard
student council of votes cast at the
senior elections gives the office of
class orator by a single vote to Will
iam S. Holbrook of Davenport, la..
Instead of to Thomas H. Mills, son
of A. L. Mills, well-known Portland
banker. It was previously reported
that Mr. Mills had been elected. The
recount was made because of the un
usual closeness of the contest.
Threb Soldiers Arrested. James
Vest, 20, Forest Cheney, 19, and Har
mon Jones, 19, stationed at Van
couver barracl'S, were arrested by
police yesterday on Portland heights
as they were driving an automobile
recently etolen from a Vancouver,
Wash., resident. The three youths
were taken over to Vancouver bar
racks where the case will be handled
by the army officials.
John Smith Is Sought. Mayme
Smith has written a letter to the
Portland police bureau for.assistanoe
in locating her brother, John Smith,
formerly of Buffalo, N. Y., who has
been missing 'for several months.
The young woman asks that her
brother write to her at once at her
home, 21S Myrtle avenue, Buffalo.
Smith is said to have been in Port
land several months ago.
Woman's Purse Looted. Mrs. J. D
Patterson, 1251 East Harrison street,
reported to the police yesterday that
her purse containing $15 and a gold
wrist watch was taken by a purse
snatcher at East Twenty-eighth and
. Belmont streets, Saturday night. She
was unable to give an accurate de
scription of the sneak thief. '
Engine Compant Accused. Com
plaint has been, made to the
county commissioners that a fire
engine last Thursday night ran the
full length of the green pavement on
Montgomery drive. The roadmaster
has been instructed to investigate and
if the road was damaged a bill will
be put in to the city.

Steel Plant Emplote Hurt. Eho
Morton, 23, of 12l'2 Mall street, sus
tained a 'deep scalp wound at the
'orthwest Steel company plant yes
terday when he slipped on a plank
and fell to the ground. His injuries
were treated at St. Vincent's hospital.
His condition is not serious.

Woodstock to Honor Pilgrims.
Appropriate exercises celebrating the
Pilgrim tercentenary will be held in
the assembly ball of Wood-stock school
this afternoon at 2 o'clock. Pupil? of
the school will present a programme
consisting of songs and recitations.
Damage to Cattle Charged. W. T.
Cross yesterday began a damage suit
ngainst the Southern Pacific for $2500.
The plaintiff says he shipped 78 head
of cattle from Merced. Cal., to Port
land and they were damaged to this
extent.

Embezzlement Is Charged. Cam
eron Geddcs was arrested in a local
hotel by deputy sheriffs yesterday.
He is wanted in Mackintosh, S. D., on
embezzlement charges.

Suit -Blames Jotriders. Joyrides
and liquor parties were said by Walter
Carlton in a divorce complaint filed
yesterday against. Katherine E. Carl
ton to have been responsible for
breaking up his home. He asked
custody of his child. James L. Lom
bard sued Rena Ethel Lombard for
separation on the grounds of deser
tion. A divorce was granted yester
day by Circuit . Judge Tazwell to
Harvey M. Lytle from Georgia Taylor
Lytle. The plaintiff charged cruelty.
The. decree in the case of Joseph R.
Gresham . against Evelyn Gresham
placed on file hows that Mrs.
Gresham received the divorce upon
failure of the plaintiff to appear last
week. She got sole custody of the
minor child. "
Morphine Sale Charged. Three
days of unceasing watch on the part
of Alvln Willis, deputy United States
marshal, was rewarded late yesterday
afternoon when he caught Charles
Hampton Pitts, negro, just as he was
entering the Golden West hotel at
Broadway and Flanders streets. Pitts
was wanted by the United States
authorities for alleged violation of
the Harrison drug act, the govern
ment charging that he sold a quantity
of morphine about December 16. Pitts
was not held long, as friends placed
$1400 bonds to insure bis appearance
when wanted.
Soldier Trio Held. Where will a
soldier get $1500? If they cannot
raise this sum James Vest, 21, Foster
C. Cheney. 19, and Harmon Jones, 18,
members of the army medical corps
detachment stationed at Vancouver
barracks, Washington, must remain in
the Multnomah county Jail. The trio
were arrested early yesterday morn
ing while driving along Terwilliger
boulevard, for the reason that they
were in a car that belonged to H. H.
Ciaassen of Vancouver. They Were
taken before Kenneth Fraser, United
States commissioner, and held to the
federal grand jury under $1500 bonds.
Fraud Charged to Jeweler. Upon
complaint of the better business
bureau a warrant has been issued by
Deputy District Attorney Magulre for
the arrest of Joseph Sevan, manager
of the Keystone Jewelry company.

items are cited in the complaint, al-
though Charles W. English of the i
better business bureau says that
other discrepancies have been found
in the advertising. He says mucn
misrepresentation has taken place in
jewelry sales conducted in the last
few weeks.
"Poor" Max (Monet Lender. Rejec
tion of the claim of the county for
600.68 said to have been paid the
late Joseph Stremel -when it was not
known he was in a position to lend
money was communicated to the com
missioners yesterday by Hazel Bernlce
Gilbert, administratrix of the estate.
District Attorney Evans has been
notified to take action in the matter.
While Stremel was receiving county
aid to purchase fuel and pay rent, it
has been learned he lent money to a
church.
Alleged Moonshiners Freed. Jo
seph Waldkirch and Theodore Turel,
alleged moonshiners who drove to the
police station and gave themselves up
after their home near St. Johns was
destroyed by fire about ten days ago,
were released yesterday from the
county jail by the United States mar
shal's office after they had deposited
$1000 bonds each to insure their ap
pearance before the grand jury. The
young men were severely burned at
the time of the fire which was thought
to have started from a still.
Hibernians Call Meeting. The
mass meeting scheduled for Wednes
day evening in Hibernia hall, 340 Rus
sell street, is designed for the two
fold purpose of sending Christmas
greetings to the suffering people of
Iceland from Oregon and to start a
campaign to materially assist inose
who are hungry and com, according
to Dr. Andrew C. Smith, wno will
preside. The meeting is called by the
Ancient Order of Hibernians and
ladies' auxiliary.
Bridge Board Changes Todat.
Personnel of the interstate bridge
commission will be changed after the
final 1920 meeting to be held today
in the courthouse at Vancouver. John
P. Kiggins of Clarke county, Wash
ington, and A. A. Muck of Multnomah
county give up their positions on this
bodjNthrough retirement from office
as county commissioners. Charles
Rudeen will take the place of the
latter. -
Lang Stne Society to Meet. The
Lang Syne society will hold a Christ
mas luncheon at noon tomorrow at
the Benson hotel. Rev. Ward W. Mac
Henry, pastor of Mount Tabor Pres
byterian church, will be the prin
cipal speaker. ' Christmas singing,
led by Walter Jenkins, and a Christ
mas tree are features of the pro
gramme. Everyone attending the
luncheon will receive a Christmas
gift.
Pilgrims to Be Topic. Dr. W. T.
McElveen, pastor of the First Con
gregational church of this city, will
be one of the principal speakers at
the Pilgrim tercentenary celebration
tonight at Salem. He will make an
address on "Pilgrims, Ancient and
Modern." in the auditorium of First
Congregational church of Salem. His
speech will follow a banquet In the
church parlors.
Engineers' Societt to Meet. The
American Society of Engineers, Ore
gon chapter, will meet tomorrow
night at 8 o'clock Iti the clubrooms,
Tiiford building, at which time W. C.
Ruegnitz will talk on "How, When
and Where?". None but the committee
on entertainment Know, what it is all
about. There will be music and lunch

Clerk Caught in Elevator. A. E.
Mitchell, 23, an employe of the Metro
politan store on Broadway, sustained
a .badly wrenched back yesterday
when he became caught In a sidewalk
elevator from in front of the store.
He was taken to St. Vincent's hospital
where It was said his injuries are not
critical. The young man is a clerk
and lives at the Carmelita apartments,

street yesterday by Lieutenant West
and Patrolman Wright and is being
held athe city jail on a bad check
charge. It is alleged he issued checks
on a Falouse, Wash., bank without
having sufficient funds to meet pay

GOLDEN AGAIN IN COURT
Man Twice Indicted Charged With
Forging $30 Check. ,
Thomas M. Golden, twice Indicted
on charges of obtaining money under
false pretenses, was again before the
circuit court yesterday, accused of
forging a $50 check. This time he
is said to have cashed a check pur
porting to be for the benefit of the
inter-church world movement by
signing the name of Bishop Sumner.
Golden was before Circuit Judge
Stapleton earlier in the year after
he had been in trouble over alleged
collection of funds for the Salvation
Army drive, when he is said falsely
to have represented himself as a so
licitor. Sentence was continued until
September, but Golden went to Seat
tle in the meantime.
