Portland's fight to obtain a central
nnlon terminal station will go im
mediately to the interstate commerce
commission. The city of Portland
has been assured the co-operation of
the Oregon public service commission i
and the necessary papers will be filed I
Immediately in Washington.
City Attorney La Roc he, in compli
ance with instructions carried in a
resolution adopted yesterday by the
city council, appeared before the r't
lic service commission and requested
the co-operation of that body.
Fred G. Buchtel. chairman of the
commission, assured him that active
and Immediate co-operation of the
public service commission could be
depended upon.
"We etand ready to do the utmost
to give Portland what she is entitled
to," explained Mr. Buchtel. "Our en
gineers will be assigned at once to
confer with Mr. LaRocbe and gather
necessary data to present to the in
terstate commerce commission."
Attorney Gets Order.
Negotiations for the establishment .
of a nnion terminal station in Port
land, insofar as the Southern Pacific
company s concerned, must be taken
up with President Sproule of that
company, according to a message Mr.
J-A Roche received yesterday from
Julius Krnttschnitt, chairman of the
fcoard of directors of the Southern
Pacific.
The message was in reply to a re
quest sent by the terminal commis
sion that the ouster order served on
the Great Northern and the Spokane,
Portland & Seattle railways be tem
porarily rescinded, and was as fol
lows: "The business of the lines owning
the Portland union terminal increased
long ago to such an extent as to badly
crowd them. Director-general during
federal control diverted certain Spo
kane, Portland & Seattle and Great
Northern trains, as a temporary war
measure, and while both the South
ern Pacific and the Oregon-Washington
Railway & Navigation companies
have added to their train service, the
nee by the northern lines was allowed
to continue pending readjustment of

Road President Mast Decide.
The resolution adopted by the coun-

The resolution, introduced by Act- j
Ing Mayor Bigelow, was adopted by
unanimous vote of the council. The
action was taken as the result of the
ouster notice served upon the Great
j.orther7i and Spokane, Portland &
Seattle railways by the terminal com-
pany.
. The ouster notice was taken by
members of the city council as a di
rect affront to the city, in view of the
fact that a committee appointed by
the mayor to investigate the terminal
situation had hardly launched its in
vestigation .when the ouster notice
was servea.
City Attorney La Roche will lose
bo time in acting upon the direction
' ct the resolution.
An application will be made to the
Interstate commission X stay the
ouster proceedings until after a com
plete investigation can be made of
the terminal situation.
Action by Council Favored.
When Mayoj- Baker introduced the
resolution appointing the heads of all
civic clubs as a committee to investi
gate the terminal situation. City
Commissioner Barbur favored direct
action by the council." He withdrew
his opposition to a committee, when
it was explained that support of the
terminal project by the civic clubs,
gained through an Investigation con
ducted by their own heads, would
produce better results.
The city council. In Its present
mood, was said not to be inclined

delay. For that reason they adopted
the resolution instructing the city
attorney to proceed to lay the matUiEi:

commission.

agreed that their secretary ask the
public service commission for a defi
nition of its power in the present con
troversy. H. B. Van Duzer sponsored
the motion and they agreed that all
members join in the movement with
civic and business interests to unite
all efforts to gain the terminal.

played in Chicago against some of
the best golfers in the country for
the woman's championship of America.

$250,000 at Yakima,
TA KIM A, Wash, Dec 15. After
considering- bids for 1250,000 of road
and $38,000 of drainage bonds of
Yakima county, the board of county
'commissioners today accepted the bid
of the Lumbermen's Trust company
of Portland for the road bonds at
par, 6 per cent and 2 per cent han
dling charge, . and $7000 drainage
. bonds at 7 per cent. 93.35.
The Blythe. Withe Co., bidding with
Carstens A Earl, Seattle, got f 31,000
. drainage bonda at 9J.60 and 7 per
