TAXCOCVER. Wash., Dec. 7. (Spe
cial.) J. P. Kiggina was elected
mayor of Vancouver at the election
today in which only a medium sized
vote was cast.
Ralph G. Perclval, son. of the late
mayor of Vancouver who committed
suicide as the result of despondency
over 111 health, was eLected to the
office of city treasurer.
Another noticeable feature of the
voting: was the defeat of William
Kerr, candidate indorsed by the Van
couver Trades and Labor Council, by
Robert E. Brady la the race for city
clerk.
The only woman who sought office
at the hands of the people was de
feated when Chris Engleman was
elected? to the city council over Mrs.
Nellie Eozorth to represent the city
at large.
William C. Bates was chosen for
city attorney practically without op
position. The filling- of the three other va
cancies in the council resulted in the
choice of the following: G. H. Wilde,
A. G. Enright and E. V. Coats.

Ben I. Hill, Elected Mayor, Prom
ises Police Department Change.
WALLA WALLA, Wash.. Dec. 7.
(Special.) Ben F. Hill, elected mayor
yesterday over Mayor D. F. Powell,
will take office with the new com
mission December 20. He has an
nounced there will be numerous
changes in the police department, but
none in the fire department unless
Fire Chief Metz requests it.
Mr. Hill said he is attempting: to
sret some new men for the police de
partment, "capable and competent,
who, if they accept the positions of
fered them, will do so at personal
sacrifice In the way of salary.
"I will do the very best I can to In
crease the efficiency of the men in
the department considering the finan
cial phase of the situation," he de
clared, "and I believe I am In a fair
way to succeed."
The police department has been
the cause of defeat of every man who
lias held the office of mayor in Walla
Walla under the commission form of
government. No mayor has ever been
re-elected.
Mr. Hill is being swamped with ap
plications for jobs at his disposal.
IIOQCIAM WOMAN ELECTED
Board of Education Place Won for
I'irst Time in History.
HOQUIAM. Wash., Dec. 7. (Spe
cial.) For the first time in the his
tory of Hoquiam schools, the board
of education will ha, as one of its
members a woman, Mrs. F. A. Peter
son, having won that honor at the
election today. B.alph D. Emerson,
local banker, was the other winner.
W. E. Campbell and James Slack,
who were candidates for re-election,
were left far behind in the 557 votes
cast.
The city registration was 1600. The
new board w'll begin functioning in
January. Mrs. Peterson is an ex
teacher and has raised a large family.

Sclvool Election.
SEATTLE, AVash., Dec. 7. Early
returns from the school election here
today showed Carl E. Croson and E.
Shorrock leading' Judge Richard Win
sor and E. J. Brown for the two
vacancies on the school board.
Only a relatively light vote was
cast and little interest was shown
in the election in any of the precincts.

Ross Edwards of Tacoma and Alpha
Pierson of Winlock. Wash., procured
a marriage license here today.
Tillamook Cheese in Demand.
TILLAMOOOK, Or., Dec. 7.(Spe
cial.) Word from Los Anseles today
reported all available stocks of Til
lamook cheese sold and, despite the
fact that Wisconsin cheese had
dropped 3 cents, Tillamook cheese was
still in demand at its present price,
which is 9 cents higher than the Wis
consin product. Wisconsin today quot
ed daisies at 21 cents, with Tilla
mook triplets, which correspond, at
30 cents. Wisconsin horns were sell
ing at 22 cents and Tillamook horns
at 31 cents.

Chehalis Elects T. J. Long Mayor.
CHEHALIS, Wash., Dec. 7. (Spe
cial.) Thomas J. Long, city commis
sioner the last three years, was
elected mayor of Chehalis for the
coming three years at the city elec
tion held yesterday, receiving 4S6
votes to 413 for Edward Deggeller.
There were three candidates for city
commissioner, John Denhof receiving
735 votes, and John L. Magoon 611,
these being elected. Thomas Verner.
the third candidate, received a total
of 403 votes.
L.Lght Vote in Tillamook.
TILLAMOOK. Or., Dec. 7. (Spe
cial.) With less than 70 votes cast
out of a total registered vote of 4000
in the county, indications tonight
were that the question of the county
purchasing fair grounds and making
improvements had carried by 120
votes. The question was submitted
to the voters at a special election yes
terday. Stormy weather is declared
to account for the small vote.
LIQUOR VIOLATION CHARGE
Four La Grande Residents on Trial
in Eederal Court Here.
Trial of four La Grande citizens
actrused of illegal possession and
transportation of liquor opened yes
terday before Federal Judge Bean.
The accused men are J. F. McDonald,
Bert Hughes, Guy Buffington and
Frank Heins.
It in asserted by the prosecution
in the case, as outlined by Deputy
Federal Attorney Flegel, that Buf
fington was the intellectual force be
hind the alleged conspiracy, though
it is not claimed that he handled any
of the Illicit liquor.
Among witnesses who testified yes
terday were Roy Flexner, chief of
police of La Grande, and Lee War
nick, sheriff.
