This new clubhouse has been built
chiefly by the men of the parish, and
is attractively furnished for men. who
will use It exclusively -in the evenings
after the opening night. Its hos
pitality and comforts, not the least of
which is a large open fireplace, are
offered to all men. and especially the
young men in the community, the
chief function of the clubbeing to
promote fellowship anions; men.
While the project is more or less
in the nature of an experiment, the
committee hopes all men of the neigh
borhood will rally to the support of
an effort' that tends to widen the
vision of life and at the same time
draw them into closer companionship.

Announce Xew Evidence In
Ding Wing Safe Case.
Evidence which the police allege

The silver was found yesterday In
Culien's room, 289 First street. It
was wrapped in packages of 50-cent
Pieces and $1 pieces, just as was the
silver in Ding Wing's safe at th
time of the robbery. The same wrap
ping paper was about the Coin yester
day in Culien's room, say the police.
Cullen was first arrested and
charged with the crime Monday night.
When Inspectors Coleman and Collins
took him Into custody he had in his
possession 1400 In currency of the
same denomination as the currency
stolen from Ding Wing's safe. With
the discovery yesterday of the silver,
the police insist that Culien's guilt is
definitely established.
The safe robbery was one of the
most daring tn recent years. Early
Saturday night two robbers drove up
to the Ding Wing home, 267 Salmon
street, and took a SOO-pound safe
from the house and carried it away
on the running board of an automo
bile, after first placing it in a trunk
which they found at the home.
The following day the safe was
found near Oswego, Or., where the
robbers had cut it open and taken the
$1600 which it contained. Cullen sub
sequently was indicted for the rob
bery and the police are now looking
for his allrged accomplice.
- Bishop Shatler To Speak. Right

night. Bishop Shayler is well known
in the Pacific northwest, having
formerly been rector of St. Marks
Episcopal church In Seattle, Wash.,
and has been a frequent visitor to this
city, especially during the war period,
when he delivered a number of pa
triotic addresses. Grace Memorial
Episcopal church. East Seventeenth
ard Weidler streets, has arranged a
special St. Andrews service on Sunday
night at 8 o'clock and Bishop Shayler
will occupy the pulpit. The bishop
will be the guest of Mr. and Mrs. A. l.

William Whitney, Who Has Done
Time In .Four States, Resents
Severe Sentence.
William Whitney, ex-convict, who
was caught in the act of attempting
to break into a house in Rose City
park, Tuesday afternoon, and who
was sentenced to six months in the
county jail, by Municipal Judge Ross
man, threatened the life of the city
judge after sentence had been pro
nounced. It was learned yesterday.
Whitney, who has served time for
burglary In four different state
prisons, in four different states, told
Judge Rossman he would "get" him
as soon as he is given his freedom
from the county jail.
After Judge Rossman had pro
nounced the sentence of Bix months
in jail and a fine of $500, which was
the limit, Whitney turned to Judge
Rossman and muttered:
"I'll remember you for this and get
you as soon as I get out."
Judge Rossman said yesterday he
had no fear that the ex-convict would
carry out his threat. The judge has
been threatened repeatedly during the
last few years by Industrial Work

victed in municipal court and sen
tenced to jail.
Whitney has served time In state
prisons of Oregon, Washington, Cali
fornia and New York for burglary.
He is said by the police to be a pro
fessional yegg," with a long crim
inal record.

who is a janitress in one of the down
town office buildings. But that has
nothing to do with this story except
for the fact that Johnnie wanted tur
key for his Thanksgiving dinner, and
there wasn't a chance in the world
for him to get it at home.
So Johnnie, with high courage and
empty stomach, essayed to sell news
papers on downtown streets Thanks
giving morning. It was about the
time that scores of newsies were
lining up in front of the Multnomah
hotel for the big turkey dinner pro
vided by Eric V. Hauser. that John
nie, with a bundle of papers on his
arms, started down Second street cry
ing his wares.
Street sales yesterday noon along
Second street were far from produc
tive, so Johnnie, despairing of a" real
ieea, counted out his pennies at a
lowly lunch counter ant bought him
self a couple of doughnuts.
He was standing disconsolately
near the corner of Second and Stark
streets, just on the fringe of the Chi
nese section. He was munching hun
grily at one of the soggy doughnuts
when an aged Chinese, carrying a
chunky little almond-eyed youngster
in his arms, passed by. The shuffling
oriental looked at Johnnie and
stopped. Instinctively he "savvied."
Fishing in a pocket of his flowing
coat, he pulled forth a couple of dimes
and received a paper with its glaring
headlines. And then he shuffled
along up the street. Johnnie, of
course, didn't know that the old
Chinese couldn't read a word.
This street sale had just been made
when Chief of Police Jenkins left po
lice headquarters in his automobile,
homeward bound for his own turkey
dinner; He witnessed the brief pan-

during the past three nights. It was
reported to the police "detective bu
reau yesterday that the same burglar
had visited the home for three con
secutive nights, but on each occasion
had been frightened away.
At the request of Mf. Hanson the
police will keep a, close watch on
his house, and If the regular midnight
intruder puts in a. fourth appearance
he will be royally welcomed by an
operative from the detective bureau.
