N The Waverly Baby home Is In sore need of more adequate quarters and more modern equipment, according to Mayor Baker, who has prepared a re port on conditions found at the home. upon personal investigation, made following the report that an epidemic was prevailing in the institution. Bronchial pneumonia, and not dysen tery was named as the cause of death, In the report of an autopsy on the in fant whose demise brought about the investigation. The autopsy was per formed by Dr. Frank N. Menne of the University of Oregon Medical school. who added that mild dysentery was a contributing cause. , Mayor Baker, according to his re port, found that conditions regarding sickness, as reported in the newspa pers, were true. At the time of his Investigation, made Wednesday, six babies were found to be extremely sick and about 14 others were more or less sick. The physicians, the mayor reports, including two of the leading baby specialists of the city, are doing and have been doing every thing possible to correct the trouble, although the cause for the illness, the mayor finds, still is uncertain. 'The only criticism that I could see in the matter of the existing epidemic is that it was not reported to the health bureau of the city as soon as' it should have been," the mayor reports. Whether anything more could have been done if it had been generally known sooner Is uncertain, but such report immediately would have headed off much of the criticism of the institution. 'I found the institution to be sani tary in every respect. Everything is clean. The only criticism that appears justified is that an institution such as this should have to operate without thoroughly modern quarters and the best of skilled help. This is only pos sible by public support. Conducting such an institution without-adequate funds is a serious handicap. So far s I am a.ble to determine the Institu tion has capable help. The medical part of the Institution is -cared for. apparently, in the very best manner by men thoroughly capable and conscientious. "My earnest desire, after having Investigated this home, is to see the public support it in such a. way that it can be continued and greatly . improved." AUTO REPAIR MEN ELECT C. Ti. Crowley, who Uvea at 1041 South Hill street, Los Angeles, the other day. "I was so weak and broken down that I was hardly able to get about at all. I suffered terribly after my meals on account of my food souring and gas f ormins; on my stomacn, anu I would feel so tight that I could hardly get a good breath. My appe tite left me and I was so nervous that I couldn't stand the least noise and 1 never knew what it was to get a good night'e sleep. "I tried dieting- for more than two years, but that didn't help me any. for I was continually getting worse all the time and actually lost 25 pounds in weight. "All the different treatments and medicines I took failed to do me the least bit of good. "I know from my personal expe rience with it that Tanlae is a good medicine, for as soon as I began tak ing it, I began to improve. Why, it is perfectly wonderful the way I have gained in strength, weight and every other way, and I now feel like a dif ferent woman entirely. "I have a fine appetite and my nerves are in such perfect condition that I sleep soundly every night. I never suffer from tour stomach and gas forming after meals and, in fact, all my troubles have just gradually disappeared since taking Tanlae.
