City officials will no sooner emerge
from the political campaign than they
will be forced Into the arduous task
of preparing the 1921 budget of mun
ieiapl expenditures. This budget,
under the provisions of the city chart
er, most be filed with the city auditor
not later than the third Monday in
November, which this year is on
November 15.
It is impossible for the city offic
ials to work out the budget until the
results of the November election are
known. The council has referred a
measure to the voters reauthorizing
the three-mill tax levy which was
voted one year ago. Much depends
upon the success of this measure, ac
cording to the members of the city
council, for should it fail, they say,
the council will be faced with a task
of reducing the service in all de
partments by at least one-third.
The results of the election will not
"be known until November 3, and then
only unofficially. Should the vote
on the three-mill tax measure be
close, it may take until Nov-ember 4
to tabulate the unofficial count.
The council usually has from three
to four weeks in which to prepare the
budget. This year, however, the
council will be forced to complete the
job in less than 10 days.
The estimates prepared by the var
ious city departments are already too
high, and according to members of
the council, many will feel the sharp
edre of the pruning knife. -
The city commissioners are determ
ined to use as much money as can be
spared from other departments in
purchasing new equipment for the
fire bureau, and the apportionment of
funds for this purpose will take con
siderable time.

fcrisk yesterday, and a block of $138,
000 of 6 per cent improvement bonds
was three times overbid.' This is the
first time in many years that munic
ipal bonds have met such a demand.
All of the bonds disposed of in the
eale yesterday brought a premium.
Freeman. Smith & Camp entered a
bid for the entire block and were
awarded $115,000. This bidder paid
$100.03 for $88,000; $100.02 for $25,000
and $100.01 for $5000 of the bonds.
The Security Savings & Trust com
pany was awarded $10,000 of the bonds
at tl'OO.Eo; Abe Tichenor, $5000 at par
and $5 premium; George C. Flanders,
$4000 at par and $4 premium, and the
Meridian Land company, $500 at
(100.50.
School Tax Levy Voted.

the school board to levy an addi
