800 Tons of Food for 80-0 Satires
Aboard; Fierce Storms ilaj Keep
Boat From Landing Cargo,
i
FT" ATTT. K, Wash.. Oct. 14. (Spe
cial.) Bound to the Prlbilof islands
in Berlne sea in an llth-hour effort
to land 800 tons of food supplies nec
essary to save the 600 natives of the
island from passing the winter In a
condition of semi-starvation, the
Vnited States naval radio repair vessel
Saturn steamed from Seattle yesterday
afternoon and after taking fuel oil at
l oiul Wells headed out of the sound
this morning. This afternoon she is
racing into the open ocean off Cape
Klatiery.
While the Saturn will not be trou
bled w ith ice conditions in Bering sea,
ac.'oi cling to the latest reports she
will probably encounter- a succession
of fierce storms when she makes the
I'ribilofs. Karlier in the season she
went to the islands with the food
fcupp'.ies needed to tide the natives
over the winter, but storm after storm
prevented her from landing the food.
She succeeded in landing mall, a cow
and a calf ashore in one brief lull, but
all the rest of the time she was held
back by the elements.
Normal insurance in Bering sea ex
pires October 81, but by paying an
extra premium it can be extended to
November 15. Beyond that date no
insurance is granted by the marine in
surance companies. This gives a hint
of hat is ahead of the Saturn. She
is under orders to land the food sup
plies if it is within the range of hu
man possibilities.
