THE 310ILM.NG OREGOXIAS, WJiDMlSDAY, SEPTEMBER 29, 1920 BIRD BILL IOC BY BOSKS Willamette Valley Committee Visits Malheur Lake. ree OPPOSED r CAUTION URGED ON VOTERS land IT Once Ceded to the Govern uient Will lie Lost to State for Good, It Is Declared. BURNS. Or.. Sept. 2S. (Special.) When a committee of Willamette val ley business men was in Burns re cently for the purpose of investigat ing the transportation problem of cen tral Oregon, a trip was made to Mal heur lake to obtain information per taining to the proposed bird refuge bill which is to come before the voters at the general election in November. After an examination of conditions the members of the committee pledged themselves to oppose the bill. They declared they felt, as the residents of Harney and adjoining counties do. that the land, once ceded to the gov ernment, will lose to the state thou sands of dollars for the school fund. Although the land is classified as ewamp land, it was found to be large ly agricultural, and not as the gen eral conception is said to be that it Is all covered by water. Hitch (ironing Olfl Seen. The committeemen saw oats grow ing from five to six feet high, two and a half miles Inside of the meander lino. County Agent McDaniels left Satur day morning for Salem to confer with county agents and took with him a sample of grain from that grown within the meander line of the lakes, and also samples of soil to be tested. B. C. Ausmus expects to attend the ate fair and take with him some of the oats and barley grown within the meander line. While here recently Senator Cham tierlain had his attention called to the bill, and when apprised of conditions he Issued a statement cautioning the voters of the state to think well be fore voting for the bill, for the land once ceded to the government is lost to the state. Railroad Is Favored. According to contour maps of this eection, Malheur lake is only 40 feet lower than the highest point of Har ney county. It would be an easy matter, it is said, to pump water onto the higher ground and get the same lesults as have been obtained in Vir ginia valley, where 130 bushels of oats have been grown to the acre. This is tne type of land the refuge bill, if passed, would keep in a primitive state and feed the birds and let the residents of Harney county keep on Importing grain instead of exporting It, it is declared. As to the transportation problem of this district, the committee will make a report to the Oregon state chamber of commerce. It Is said the report will take the attitude that a railroad is necessary for the development of central Oregon. A feasible route is declared to be that of the Natron cut-off. The committeemen, who were guests cf William Hanley while here, were Ij. K. Bean. George H. "McMorran. J. B. Bell. Wallace Griffin and Frank Jenkins. Central Oregon Visited. EUGENE, Or.. Sept 28. (Special.) A party of Eugene business men that left here a week ago to make an automobile trip through central and eastern Oregon to arouse interest in better railway connections between those parts of the state and the Willamette valley, have returned, en thusiastic over the vast latent re sources of the sections through which they traveled. The party drove to Bend, thence to Redmond and Prine viile, to Burns. Malheur lake, Vale and Herraiston. thence across the Idaho line to Payette and Weiser. returning- by way of La Grande and Pendleton. This new way to beautiful teeth All statements approved by authorities Your druggist today has a new way of teeth cleaning. And a ten-day tube is free. Millions of people now employ it. Leading dentists everywhere advise it. You would never go without it if you knew. Go ask for that free tube. There are few things more important than well protected teeth. Remove the film-coat You brush teeth now, but you leave much of the film. A viscous film clings to the teeth, enters crevices and stays. The ordinary tooth paste does not end it. So teeth too often discolor and de cay. Dentists now know that the reason lies in film. That causes most tooth troubles. And, until one ends it, brush ing fails to save the teeth. It fs the film-coat that discolors, not the teeth. Film is the basis of tartar. It holds food substance which ferments and forms acid. It holds the acid in contact with the teeth to cause decay. Millions of germs breed in it. They, with tartar, are the chief cause of pyor rhea. And pyorrhea wrecks countless lives today. An alarming situation Tooth troubles have been constantly increasing. Very few people escape them. So dental science has in late years studied to combat that film. Now we know how. The methods have been proved by careful clinical tests, made under able authorities. Now millions of people employ them, largely by dental advice. A new era in teeth cleaning is fast spreading the world over. ' These new methods are combined in a dentifrice called Pepsodent. A 10 Day Tube is given to everyone who asks. Now all who will may quickly know that film can be combated. What you will see A test of Pepsodent brings quick and unique effects. One sees and feels them clearly. And a book which comes with the 10-Day Tube tells the reasons for them. One ingredient is pepsin. Another multiplies the starch digestant in the saliva to digest starch deposits that cling. Each application also multiplies the alkalinity of the saliva to neutral ize the acids which cause tooth decay. Two factors directly attack the film. One keeps the teeth so highly polished that film cannot easily adhere. Day by day we fight the film and all its ill effects. You see the results in whiter teeth. You feel them in cleaner teeth. But the great results are such protection as teeth never had before. You owe yourself a knowledge of these facts. Old ways of brushing have proved sadly inadequate. Nearly everybody at some time suffers troubles caused by film. Now science knows how to combat film, and in ten days you can know. Never again will you trust the old ways when you know the new. jfj) raw huaw urn : -t, t gaa pat.OFF. REG. U.S. The New -Day Dentifrice Present this Free Tube Coupon this week to " Meier & Frank Co.
