6250 ACRES Or GRASSHOPPKRS
KILLED IX. IDAHO.
More ' Than 4 0 Scliool Districts
Organize to Eight Pest
Which Ravages Crops.
GR.VN'OEVTLIK. Idaho, Sept. 5.
(Special.) Grasshoppers were meas
ured by the acre in Idaho county this
season, and the farm bureau cam
paign for their destruction is esti
mated to have saved the farmers
J205.379 on their crops. More than 40
school districts were organized to
fight the pest and 27 grasshopper
meetings were held in two months
with an attendance of 600 farmers.
Knougrh poisoned bran mash was
mixed to cover 6250 acres. There
were 2085 acres covered three times,
the grasshoppers being completely ex
terminated each time. As it was
known that an acre of grasshoppers
would destroy ten acres of grain, hay
or garden truck, the acreage of crops
naved from ruin was computed at
20.850.
Estimating the average value of
crops at only $10 an acre, the gross
saving was $208,500. The cost of get
ting the bran rtfash to the farmers.
wno co-peraieu wilii ine icliiii un
real!, was $3121. Expenditure of time
by farmers in mixing and distribut
ing the poison was not estimated.
The permanent snow fields of

lines of the highest mountain ranges,
as they do in the Swiss Alps, and are
less than 1 per cent of Alaska's total
area.
