BOSTON, Mass., Aug. 17. Interest
ing .play was brought out In the na
tional doubles lawn tennis champion
ship tournament on the Chestnut Hill
courtn of the Lonsjwood Cricket club
today, when the -first round 'and five
of the eight matches in the second
were completed.
The feature was a five-set match
in which Willis Davies and Roland i
Kcberts, Californians, won from W.
M. Washburn and Dean Ma they, of
New York.
The players were on the courts
nearly four hours. After the Cali
fornians, by brilliant play had run
out the first set, 6-3, Washburn and
Mathey rallied strongly. The second
set went to deuce six times before
the New Yorkers took it, 12-10.
Davis and Roberts captured the
thiid, 6-3, and their opponents took
the fourth by the same score. The
Californians won the final set, 6-3.
W. T. Hayes and R. H. Burdick, the
Chicago team, had considerable dif
ficulty in disposing of J. W. Foster
and J. Wheelwright, of Fort Worth,
Tex.
W. T. Tllden and Charles Garland
ot the Davis Cup team, had no trouble

Ihlllip Brain in straight sets.
William M. Johnstone, of San Fran
cisco, national ' lawn tennis singles
champion, today gainted possession of
the ilongwood singles bowl by de
feating Nathaniel W. Nlles of Boston,

Aquatic Event at Grants Pass.
GRANTS PASS. Or., Aug.' 17. (Spe
cial.) A programme of swimming
contests similar to those of last sea
son will be staged at the city bath
house in Riverside park, Friday even
ing. The programme will include
swimming, diving and .canoe competi
tions. The merchants of the city
have offered some valuable prizes for
the various events. The water Is in
the finest condition and the large
flood light illumination of the river
makes evening swimming very popu
lar. The usual concert by the city
band will precede the sports events.
Tacoma Plays Grays Harbor.
ABERDEEN'. Wash., Aug. 17. (Spe
cial.) Week-end golf matches be
tween the men of the Tacoma Country
club and the Grays Harbor Country
club resulted in a score of 35 to 20.
The Tacoma party numbered 21. A
blind bogey match was played Sun
day morning. ' Mrs. L. G. Humbarger
and Ernest W. Martin divided the
first and second prises. S. Jackson
and P. Johns, both of Tacoma. divided
the third prize.
