TOE MORNING OHEGOXIAN, FRIDAY, JULY 30, 1920 13 Y MAY BE LIVELY ONE Hot Congressional Fight Washington Possible. in REPUBLICANS ARE ACTIVE Senator Ioindex(cr Held Commit ted to Support of Senator Jones Seeking Re-clccUon. SEATTLE. Wash., July 29. (Spe cial.) A republican congressional fight may enliven the last month of the primary campaign in the state of Washington this year, but surface in dications are that the present mem bers of the delegation have the edga on the different contests. There Is no secret of the fact that Senator Miles Polndexter, chairman of the senate republican campaign committee, is committed to the sup port of Senator Wesley L.. Jones for re-election, and if he can aid the Jones candidacy by doing so Polndex ter purposes to spend some time in this state. Thus far neither Senator Jones nor his friends have felt that they needed the support of national leaders. .Sen ator Jones is completing his 22d year in congress, 12 of which have been spent in the upper house, and during his career the senior senator has come into personal contact with thousands of voters scattered throughout the entire state. Significant Knot JVutcd. A significant fact in the Jones cam paign, declare republican 'politicians, is the circumstance that at the confer ence of radical groups in Yakima last week no one except Forest L.. Hud son, a railroad man, was found who was willing to make the race against Jones, and Hudson offered to get out of the way if anybody else could be found to enter the fight. However, there is a strong under current of opposition to Jones among politicians, just as there has been for several years. Had there been a care ful grooming of some kind for a long period of time the Jones contest might have been made far more In teresting in the primaries.1 In po litical circles It is regarded as cer tain that the name of George F. Cot terill will be filed as the democratic ' candidate against Jones. The announcement that Tom Corkery of Spokane would contest Representative J. Stanley Webster's renomination in the fifth district is not surprising and It would not have been unexpected even if the non partisan league groups at Yakima had failed to indorse him. Corkery was a Bull Moose candidate for rep resentative in the same district, then later had the republican nomination against C. C. Dill, the democratic in cumbent in 1916. In 1918 republican leaders In the district induced Judge Webster to resign from the supreme . court bench and make a fight against Dill. Corkery thought at that time that he should have been given an other chance to defeat the democratic Incumbent and he had nursed a grudge against the republicans who brought out Webster. Webster Has Opposition. There is a bitter fight on against Webster in some Spokane and Hill yard labor circles, but in the other counties of the fifth district Webster is conceded to be very strong. Representative John W. Summers nf Walla Walla has faced a fight for re-election from the rourth district for a year or more. Captain E. K. Brown of Ellenshurg. former prose cuting attorney of Kittitas county and later a member of the legislature, has been an avowed candidate against Summers and has been campaigning in the district for several months. Politicians do not believe any seri ous fight will be waged against ether Representative Albert. Johnson of Hoquiam in the third district or Representative L. H. Hadley in the Bfcond. Representative John F. Miller is be ing opposed by Major K. S. Gill in the first district, which comprises Seattle and Kitsap counties. Miller got a good start in the Kitsap county fight, where an alliance of active re publican workers organized for him a few weeks ago and would appear to have all the better of it in that cor ner of the district. . GIRL ROBBER, 17, JAILED THEFT OF MAXV AUTOMOBILES ADMITTED, SAY POLICE. 18-Year-Old Laborer Also Taken, Cliaufrcur Arrested on Tip Furnished by Pair. SEATTLE, Wash., July 29. (Spe clal.) With a li -year-old girl as one of their number, a youthful band, al le;red to be made up of automobile thieves, was discovered when Patrol- man W. K. Goodwin, of the West Se attle police station arrested the girl and a young man companion on Beach drive in V est Seattle. The pair had come to the place in a stolen auiomoone, tne police say, to get a cache of automobile tires, which had been taken from a stolen car and hidden In the brush. Patrolman Goodwin took the girl ana ner companion to the West Se attie station, wnere they were ques tioned. Captain C. U. Bannlck said the girl confessed that the band had stolen several automobiles and that she had been trying to, get them to stop. The girl arrested is Genevieve Hayes, and her companion gave the name ot Aivm a. j,ipsky, ig years ot ae, laborer. On information given by Lipsky and the girl the police later arrested Al bert J. Blackmore, 28 years of age, cnauiieur. TOURIST TRICK DETECTED "NO GAS" S1GX REPORTED AS DIVERTING STATE TRAVEL, Oregon Said lo Be Minus Gasoline and Machines) Urged to Take Sou Hi Route. Tourists making the transcontinen tal trip to the Pacific coast are being diverted from Oregon because of the Kasoline shortage, according to a let ter received by George Quayle, secre tary of the state chamber of com merce, from W. The only other writing found among his effects was in a time-book and consisted of the story of "The Spoilers" as set forth by the film made from that novel.
