THE 3IORXIXG OREGOXIAX, TIIUHSDAY. JUIA' 20. 1920 11 PORTLAND MILK TEST SHOWS HIGH QUALITY cl Supplying 95 to 100 Per Cent Rate Product. 56 RATE BETWEEN 90-95 Labor Situation Prevents Hnj Dairymen lYom Maintaining Past Record, Survey Reveals. Twenty-two milk producers ana distributors are supplying milK to Fortland which tests between 95 and 100 per cent. This was revealed in the announce ment of standings or dairymen anu distributors issued yesterday by Dr. It. W. Mack, in charge of the milk division of the Portland health bu reau, resulting from a milk test made on July 6. Fifty-six dairymen ana dealers, wno re supplying milk rate between u and 95 points. The high quality of rortland'a milk supply is shown by the fact that but 30 dairymen are supplying milk between 85 and su points and but 13 wltn mil rating below 85 points. The iudcres who handled the mint test were R. J. Cosson. milk special ist of the bureau of animal industry, V'nited States department of agricul ture and Professor V. B. Chappell or the dairy division of the Oregon Ag- rlcultural college. According to Dr. Mack, the laDor situation has made it difficult for some of the dairymen to continue past high records. Some dairymen who always registered above so points are now "rated about 90 points. A vigorous campaign is being waged by Dr. Mack to maintain the high record which has always markea the milk supplied to the rortlana district. Inspectors of the milk di vision are visiting dairying farms. suggesting improvements, and are keeping a careful survey on the milk reaching Portland for distribution. Passcng-ers Pay 8 Cents to Reach Destination and 7 Cents to Get Back. TACOMA. Wash.. July 2S. (Spe cial.) Fares on the municipal 'street railway will be reduced to 5 cents August 1. Transfers to the Tacoma Railway & Power company lines from the municipal railway will be sold at 3 cents each This action was taken by the city council today when a resolution intro duced by Commissioner Harrison was adopted unanimously. This action was taken by the coun cil following receipt of a letter from the traction company requesting that the present transfer agreement re main in force. Under the present agreement the company gets 3 cents from the city when the municipal line issues a transfer, and the city gets 2 cents from the company when a tranEfer issued on the Tacoma Rail way & Po iver line is accepted by the city. The commissioners thought this agreement absurd, because it would cost a patrjrt 8 cents to go to the Tideflats and 7 cents to return. Na definite steps had been taken today looking to the operation of jitney, in competition with the street cars. But little trouble was experienced In collecting another cent cash fares on the traction lines today, accoraing to George W. Rour ds, superintendent of the company. Scliorield Estate Appraised.
