OREGON CITT. Or., July 22. (Spe
cial.) The Welsh singers gave an entertaining-
programme at the Chau
tauqua here this afternoon and eve
ning:, offering a variety of musical
numbers and dramatic readings. The
eight young women showed careful
training and much ability. Judge
George 15. Alden delivered a stirring
talk. "The Powder and the Match."
treating with a number of phases of
American life in a practical and hu
morous way.
"Kindling," the powerful drama
that had a phenomenal two-year run
on Broadway, and which has met with
success throughout the east, will be
presented Friday night by the Mau
rice Browne players, a group of able
actors. The play will be the out
standing dramatic event of the ses
sion and as one of the headline fea
tures it is expected to draw a large
crowd.
Oregon Girl In Cast.
Maurice Browne aid his wife. Ellen
Van Volkenburg, were leaders of the
little theater movement and have met
with much success. One of the cast
of the company is Janet Young, an
Oregon girl, who has been playing in
New York this past winter. Miss
Young played on the Chautaqua cir
cuit here several years ago under the
direction of Fergus Reddie of the Uni
versity of Oregon.
Major A. FT Palmer, who was in
active service ' overseas, will appear
on the afternoon programme Friday,
talking on "The Spirit of France."
The Olson duet will give a prelude
programme of musical numbers. "The
Government Thrift Campaign" will be
the topic of a talk by E. J. Stack, who
Is in charge of the thrift work in this
district. Mr. Stack will also talk on
labor questions.
Poultry SeNNion Held Today.
Assisted by Professor H. K. Cosby
of the Oregon Agricultural college,
the young people's poultry clubs of
the county and Miss Romney Sned
ecker will demonstrate methods that
have proved successful in the poul
try Industry. The demonstration pro
gramme will be as follows: Culling
the poultry flock, Clarkes club mem
bers; packing eggs for shipment,
Clarkes club . members; eggs not to
pick for incubation. Fernwood club;
pairing birds for production, Kelso
club. The young members of the
clubs have been carrying on their
poultry work for some time and have
made the industry progress and pay.

Attorney-General Brown today ad
vised O. P. HofI, state treasurer, that
tho proceedings attendant to the is
suance of $100,000 bonds by the city
of Heppner for a municipal water
plant were incomplete and that he
would not pass on the legality of the
issue until the omissions were sup
plied. Mr. Hoff recently agreed to
purchase these bonds from the city of
Heppner in case they were found to
be regular.
