A reception in honor of Estes Snede cor, Portland attorney who was re cently elected international president of Rotary, will be given by the Port land Rotary club at the Chamber of fnmmc-mt Tnesdav noon. July 20. All members of civic clubs and the gen eral public are invited to the re ception. Mayor George L. Baker will be chairman of the day. In the evening at 6:30 a dinner meeting will be held at the crystal room of the Benson hotel in order that the wives, sisters and mothers of Ro tarians may meet the international president. Delegates who attended the Atlantic City convention will make reports at this meeting. Portland Moose Picnic. The eighth annual picnic of Portland lodge No. 291. Loyal Order of Moose, held yes terday at Crystal Lake park, was one of the biggest affairs ever staged tinder the auspices of the local or ganization. Nearly 400 members of the order and many of the general public turned out with their fam ilies and enjoyed the day. In the morning a baseball game was played and many athletic events on the pro gramme were given in scheduled or der. The band gave a concert in the oftornoon and dancing was featured. Dancing was also enjoyed in the evening and by trolley and automo bile the picnickers returned, to me city last night. Reckless Driving Charge Filed. M. W. Welchmetcalf, clerk, 26, was arrested on a charge of reckless driv ing early yesterday morning by Pa trolman Brooks at Twenty-third and Washington streets. The man is said to have collided with a Portland Da mascus creamery truck in front of the Keystone confectionery store while trying to turn from Twenty third etreet onto Washington street. Welchmetcalf put up $50 bail to in sure his appearance in the municipal court today. Portland W eather Warms r. Hopes for the continued cool weather of Saturday over the weeK-ena were dashed yesterday when the official weather bureau's report showed an advance of eight degress over the previous day's maximum reading. Seaside, dur ing the month of July. Mrs. George Rae of 189A Sixteenth street North, had a delightful visit last week from her sister-in-law and her niece, Mrs. John Rae and Miss Margaret Rae. The visitors left late in the week for a trip through south ern Oregon and will return to spend a fortnight with Mrs. Rae before re turning to New Tork City, where Miss Margaret is the youngest principal in the New Tork public schools. LOGGERS STAGE PICNIC Loyal Lesion Entertains Big Crowd "With Contests and Dancing. The annual picnic of the Loyal Le gion of Loggers, held yesterday at Rock Island, furnished a summer di version somewhat out of the ordinary, according to reports from those who enjoyed the festivities. While a larger crowd than was ex pected attended, there was room for all and every one reported a good time. Timber cutting contests and log rolling contests were the features of the day, and felling trees as done in the forests came in for its share of the thrills. The sawing contest proved the most interesting feat of the day. . Those who failed to bring basket lunches were well provided for by the refreshment stands. Friends here have Just received news that Earl M. Shank, young Hood River grocer, and Miss Lila Chase, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. G. B. Chase of Corvallis were married at Corvallis Thursday. Miss Chase taught at the Odelr school here last year. Mr. Shank was formerly a student of spite of the westerly winds that blew I Oregon Agricultural college. He is most of the day, and the fact that the sky was obscured by clouds, the ther mometer rose steadily until a maxi mum of 82 degress was reached at 4 o'clock, as compared to a maximum of 74 for Saturday. Electric Iron Causes Sire. Fire caused by an electric iron did about $100 damage to the residence of O. V. Badley, 614 East Main street, yes terday about noon. The family had gone away for the day, leaving the electric iron burning. E. W. Wolf, East Sixteenth and Main streets, saw the smoke pouring from the residence and, breaking into the back door, had the fire partially extinguished with a garden hose when engine 9 arrived on the scene.
