FOUL PLAY INDICATED Reliable Merchandise Reliable Methods THE MORNING OREGOXIAX, SATURDAY, JULY 3, 1920 CH MISS NG BANKER UNEARTHED Vermont .Man Disappears In San Francisco In 19 19 When Con templating Trip Here. Belief that Kred N. Braley, former banker of Barre, Vt., has met with foul play was strengthened Thursday when Ben Bechtel and Charles L. Miner, employes of the Skidmore Drug company, unearthed a hidden cache In the wild underbrush above Macleay park, which contained two glass fruit jars filled with personal papers and property. 1 Braley, who was 50 years old. has been missing since January, 1919, when he was last heard from at San Francisco. A nation-wide search, made by relatives and friends of the missing banker, has failed to disclose any possible clew to his whereabouts. The cache was accidentally discov ered late Sunday afternoon by Ben Bechtel when he fell into the brush covered pit while climbing the hills above Macleay park. His curiosity aroused by discovery of a deep hole in the dense underbrush, Mr. Bechtel started digging and soon found that a part of the hole was covered wicn boards. Darkness overtook him be fore he could conclude his investiga tion. Search Again Delayed. Returning the following day with Mr. Miner, he continued his . search and located another compartment to the pit, which was about four feet in length and two feet wide. They were again overtaken by darkness and compelled to discontinue the search. At an early hour Thursday morning they returned and at that time located the two glass fruit jars at one end of the pit and less than a foot beneath the ground. After taking out the Jars they dug farther and came upon a board covering. There was nothing beneath the boards, al though indications were that it had at one time been used as the prin cipal cache. In the two glass jars was found the will of Kred N. Braley dated July 24, 1908, at liar're, Vt. The will be queathed $5000 to a housekeeper and the remainder to a trust fund. Nu merous other personal papers were contained in the jars. These included several checks on the Montpelier Bank and Trust company. All were made out for $300 and were signed by the missing man, although the name of the payee had been left off all the checks. Two Friends Sought. There were also letters written to him by a new York attorney and by B. H. Hite, an oil operator of Salt Lake, who, from the tenor of the several letters, was a close personal friend and advisor of Braley. Ef forts are now being made to get in immediate communication with both these persons. According ' to information received here, the last heard from Braley was at San Francisco the latter part of January, 1919. At that time he was contemplating a trip to Portland, al though a letter dated January 29, 1919, from New York was among the effects in the glass jar, showing that he did not come north until after that date. Where Braley has met with foul play or whether he has used this cache to hide personal property and papers is a matter of conjecture. That he was the owner of the two glass jars in which all his effects were found is indicated from the fact that they were wrapped with a Vermont newspaper. The newspapers above the boards at the base of the pit were Portland newspapers. Mr. Bechtel was unable to distinguish the date, although they were papers printed during the recent war. One Pit Opened Recently. "It is certain in my mind that this cache, or pit, has been there for sev eral years from the appearance of one part of it," said Mr. Bechtel yester day. "The end of the pit where 1 first fell through showed every in dication of having been opened com paratively recently, while the other end beneath where the glass jars were found appeared not to have been touched for several years. Roots had been growing up between the cracks in the boards. "The pit is in such a secluded and wild spot of the hills it is not pos sible that two persons have Used it as a cache .without the knowledge of each other. Thus, the only theory that can possibly be advanced is that it has been used as a cache for sev eral years and that one end of it has been opened, possibly within the past year." According to information received by Mr. Bechtel, Mr. Braley left Ver mont more than two years ago, coming west to locate. During his residence in the west he apparently had invested heavily in oil and- mining stocks, much of the latter being of uncertain value. There was a con siderable quantity of oil and copper siocks in tne glass fruit jars, but in vestigation has not yet developed their probable value. Signatures Appear Korged. Mr. Bechtel said that one indication that Braley might have met with foul play was the discrepancy in his sig nature on the various checks, notes and papers found in the jans. Several sheets of letter paper which contained nothing but his signature at the bot tom of the pages appear to be for geries of his signature on other papers, he said. Two- gold watches and a bunch of keys were the other items of "personal property in the jars. All of the papers and property were turned over to a local attorney by .Mr. Bechtel and every effort is now being made to find some solution to the mystery. There are no police records, it is said, which indicate the discovery of any unknown body which might answer the description of the missing Vermont banker. Forest Trail Is Started. MORTON, Wash..
