I HORSE
BRILLIANT SUCCESS
Riding and Horses Exceed
Hopes of Directors.
ALL CLASSES DO WELL
Pendleton Representatives Late Tjut
- Capture Audience Ty "IVild
AVcst Exhibition .
From the standpoint of quality and
number of entries the nisht horse
show this week at the Multnomah
Amateur Athletic club field is a bril
liant success. The riding: and horses
have exceeded tho highest hopes of
the directors as well as of the spec
tators, who give vent to frequent
bursts of enthusiasm as the different
classes perform in their best and
snappiest style. Each night's pro
gramme is featured by something new
and spectacular.
Yesterdays matinee was featured
by the Grafton long jump, a ring
event new to the equine fanciers of
I'ortland. In this class the horses
were ridden ovw a two-foot Jump
with pasteboard boxes on ths far side.
Content I'rovcs Spirited.
It was finally won alter some spir
ited competition, in which more than
25 thoroughbred steeds were entered,
by Flying Fox, with W. U. Sanderson
up. Bounder, one of Revel L. Knc
lish's mounts, with Miss Hilda Mc
PnrmH rk nn. came out with second
honors, while Victoria, belonging to
James McClcave and ridden by Miss
Doris OxIy McCleave, took third
prize. Moderation, another of the Mc
Cleave stable, was fourth. The Graf
ton long- Jump was for the Imperial
hotel stake of $100.
An unusual thrill was afforded in
the Grafton jump when Claude r.
Starr, astride Majestic, was thrown in
attempting to negotiate the barrier.
Outside of being slightly shaken up
Mr. Starr was uninjured.
Marquisa. a thoroughbred purs
Arabian steed owned by Miss Sara
Jane Talbot of Portland, carried off
two blue ribbons, winning the ponies
class and the pony jump. In the first
event. Marquisa was ridden by Miss
Talbot and was piloted to a first place
in the second by Jack McDougall.
Some real western riding was ex
hibited by cowboy riders hn the stock
saddle horse class, which was won by
James H. Lemons' Sir Donald. This
was for the North Portland Stock
vards' stake of $200 with 100 ad
ditional to North Portland stockyard
riders. It was planned to have 12
Pendleton cowboys ride, but as they
were late in arriving the class was
run off without them. The Pendleton
riders later put in an appearance and
captured the audience by staging a
miniature wild west show.
The musical chairs, put on by niem
hers of the artillery from the Oregon
Agricultural college, made a decided
hit and proved to be very amusing.
Highland Laddie, owned and ridden
by Miss Clementine Lewis, a youthful
horsewoman of Portland, captured
the pony high jump.
A drill participated in by 16 mlssss
of the Junior Hunt club closed the
programme.
Prominent Shrtner Arrives.
Noble F. "W. Wilson, prominent
member of Kerck temple, Reno, Nev..
arrived in Portland not only to at
tend the Shrine convention but also
to assist at the night horse show as
ringmaster, alternating with Captain
C. Hartwell. Mr. Wilson not only has
been a judge of numerous horse
shows but he also is professor of ani
mal husbandry at the State Univer
sity of Nevada. He is also a well
known authority on horseflesh and
his timely arrival is adding interest
to the horse show. He was ringmas
ter yesterday at the matinee, offi
ciating in Kerek costume, which
added a splash of color to the scene.
He will act in a similar capacity this
evening, assisting Judge C. W. Green.
The musical chairs will be repeated
tonight, as will also the special exhi

bottle found on Faciric Deach by
Carl Haujre, an Aberdeen boy. The
name of the ship was given as the

know of no such ship, and believe
the message is a hoax. The chip's lo

Fourth to Die From Accident. .
AEET1DEEX Wash., Juno 23. (Spe
cial.) Mrs. Hattio Olmstead. who
died at the Aberdeen sreneral hospital
today, after lingering since Saturday,
when ehf waa struck by, a, Northern
NIGH
SHOW
Tacific train near IMontesano, was the
fourth of her immediate family to die
from accidents. Her motjier, Mrs.
Katon, wag killed in an automobile
collision here a year ago, a nephew
was killed in an accident near Bel
lingham and fiix weeks ao a brother
was killed in a lumber mill accident
near Bellingham. It was to attend
his funeral that Mrs. Olmstead came
to Washington. Following the fu
neral she visited her father and sis
ter and other relatives here, and was
on her way to her home at Prince
ton, Idaho, when the accident occurred.
Teachers Marrying Rapidly.
MARSHFIELD, Or., June 23. (Spe
cial.) The possibility of school
teachers marrying has been pretty
well presented through the press in
various parts of the state, but there
is a district in Curry county that
should have the banner, if there is
any prize offered for ill luck in keep
ing teachers on the job. Euchre
Creek, according to report, has fur
nished in the past eight years, as
many brides, and consequently a new
teacher had to be secured for the en
suing school year. ." But the last
straw broke when four teachers in a
row married before their terms were
completed. If any district in Oregon
has a record for unwillingly conduct
ing a marriage bureau that will beat
this one, Curry county people want
to know of it.
