CONSTABLE FIGHT El !FJ GLOSS BURIES HATCHET AXD WILL KEEP PLACE. Commissioners Explain. That They Always Wanted to Select Nominee but Could Not. The hatchet is burled. Ed Gloss did the deed yesterday when he in formed the county commissioners he would be willing . to remain in the constable's office providing he could hold his former position and not be forced to become chief deputy. Gloss, who has the republican nomination for constable, was not recommended by Mark W. Petersen to fill the va cancy created by the latter's resigna tion. Instead, Charles J. Honeyman was appointed to fill out the term, expiring on the first of the year. 'Our choice was you, Mr. Oloss, said Commissioner Hoyt yesterday. "We didn't want it any other way. Commissioner Holman amended, "but Mr. Petersen's resignation was con tingent upon our placing Mr. Honey man in his office and we could hardly do other than follow his recom mendation "I'll admit I was hasty In refusing to accept a place as chief deputy under Honeyman," said Gloss. "I'm willing to bury the hatchet." The commissioners advised the sheriff to employ more deputies dur ing the Shrine convention. Condemnation proceedings were begun by the board of commissioners for widening Kellogg street, which the city proposes to make the main outlet for municipal terminal No. 4 at St. Johns. Street cars will be oper ated on this street. An audit of the constable's office was authorized, in order that the business may be checked up before the new administration begins. BARBERS TO ARBITRATE Employers and Workers Unable to Reach Agreement Unaided. Inability of union barbers and em ployers to agree on the new barbers wage scale to go into effect -next tnonth has resulted in the question of the new scale being submitted to the jitate board of conciliation, according to announcement made yesterday. Definite date for the taking up of the matter before the state board has not been set, although it will be as soon as the representatives of the two factions and the board can get to gether, it was said. The union barbers asked for a guar anty of $-5 a week with 65 per cent of all over J36. The master barbers offered them a guaranty of $26 with 60 per cent of all over $40. Both sides had agreed to abide by the decision of the board of concilia !Uon, it was declared yesterday. The board of conciliation is com posed of W. F. Woodward, J. K. Flynn (and. Otto It. Hartwig. The three men, living in the vicin ity of Lance avenue and Tenino street, who were arrested were Riejhard ands-trom, S. W. Watson and M. J. IMltcn. Charges against them were pre ferred by Mrs. J. K. Now they know differently. Portland mothers, as expressed by the members of phalanxes of wom en's clubs, do not mind if thejr darling (laughters ko out to swim, but they have absolutely no intention of said daughters hanging their clothes on a bickory limb for the purpose, not of bathing, but of parading. The bathing-girl parade has not yet been abandoned. Not yet. but eoon. A committee of the women, consisting of Mrs. A. K. Flegel and Hra. Harriet Hendee. Is to wait on the entertainment committee of the Shrine and assure them just exactly why and wherefore they oppose' the parade of youthful charms, arrayed in knitted, silken or other bathing or supposed-to-be bathing garments. Charles F. Berg, chairman of the j entertainment committee, is authority , for the statement that if the women present valid arguments why the pa rade should not be held, said parade will be tossed into the discard. Three Members of Realty Board to Represent City; North west Has Delegates. Northwest delegates to the conven tidn of the National Association of Realty Boards, which will be held at Kansas City June 2 to 5, left Portland in two special cars yesterday morn ing over the Union Pacific system. Twenty-three members of the Port land Realty board will represent this city at the convention, while Vancou ver and Victoria, B C, Seattle, Ta coma, Spokane. Salem and other cities of the Pacific coast and northwest have sent representatives. To advertise the commercial possi bilities of the northwest country in general and Oregon in particular, delegates from Portland have pre pared several exhibits which they be lieve will attract the attention of the convention to Oregon lumber, flour and other products. In addition, the Phez company of Salem has arranged a booth at the meeting, where dele gates from all communities in the United States and Canada will have an opportunity to taste blackberry and loganberry Juice manufactured in Oregon. In charge of the delegation from Portland is F. O. Brockman, secretary of the local board. Competing in the five-minute ora torical contest, which is open to speakers of every individual delega tion, will be W. H. Ross of Portland, winner of the cup which was recently donated by the real estate dealers of the city. Frank L. McGuire will ad dress the convention on the "McGuire House-Selling Plan," which has re ceived national attention. a Many of the Portland delegates later will attend the republican na tional convention at Chicago. Schulderman, state corporation commissioner, who yesterday was asked to resign by Governor Olcott, refused to make any statement today. other than he would sever his con nection with the state as soon as his successor was ready to take over the department. Friends of the deposed' commis sioner, however, ventured the infor mation today that Mr. Schulderman had told them that he was not re sponsible for the campaign advertise ments of which Governor Olcott com plained, but that they were inserted in the press by persons interested in his success and he would not humili ate them by making a public state ment of the facts. Mr. Schulderman resided in Portland prior to his ap pointment. - T. B. Handley of Tillamook, ap pointed state corporation commis sioner, is eligible to fill the office, de spite the fact that he was a member of the legislature that created the corporation department, according to an opinion given by Attorney-General Brown today. The attorney-general held in his opinion, however, that Mr. Handley's tenure as state senator would terminate with his acceptance of the office.of corporation commis sioner.
