23. STOCKS TURN UP1WABD SEW YORK MARKET REVERSES ITS RECEXT COCRSE.- lioudb Arc Also Stronger Larger - Offerings of Call Money For eign Exchange More Active. NEW TORK, May 25. For the first time la several weeks the stock market today manifested a disposition to shake off its. apathy and pessimism, many specu lative as well as standard share scoring substantial gains. Apart from the enlarged offerings of call money, which ruled at 6 per cent, surface conditions conveyed no definite intimations of any material change In the country wide stringent money situation. Far more than the usual activity was shown by foreign exchange, the Paris rate strengthening -considerably, while German remittances continued to advance, marks approximately 3 cents, tbeir high est quotation in many months. Sterling eased, however, in the absence of state ments concerning gold exports from Lon don. industrial and commercial conditions presented more stable aspects. Metal issues figured more than ordinari ly in the day's broad buying of stocks. Coppers made considerable headway on reports that extensive buying orders for loreign consumption are impending. Halls also contributed more than their usual quota at moderate gains. Sales 8011,000 shares. Foreign issues, notably .dominion of Canada (113, which fell 1 Vi per cent, were the only laggards in the bond mar ket, where a generally strong tone pre vailed. Total sales, par value, $16,650,000. Did United States 4s lost ja- on call, oth ers unchanged. CLOSING STOCK QUOTATIONS. of a demand from seaboard. The con- I solcuoua feature of the Pit tradinz was lack: of outside purchases. Much of the I buying was based on indications of con evstion in the Miv delivery and talk that industries and shippers are the" leading I lonsrs and anxious to secure delivery. Re- I ceipts were of fair proportions and met anj improve ! demand from shippers, wno com peted with Industries for spot offers. Sales were 1 cent to 5 cents higher here, while outside markets reported a better demand at 2 to cents advance. The ear situa tion is said to be growing steadily better 1 and it rs to be expected tnat trie move ment will be materially enlaiged within the next wdk or ten days. The order of I the interstate commerce commission went into effect and will continue tor au aaya. Crop advices are mixed with complaints of delayed planting due to wet weather somewhat more numerous. At the moment I the influential factors are such as to give the market an indefinite trend with the unfavorable weather temporarily offset ting the prospect to Increased supplies The latter situation seems of greater ir portunee. Kor this reason we favor position on the selling side on hard spots. Oats Outside buying, stimulated by : firmness in the cash market and reports I of some round lets having been sold foi ! export and the seaboard during the past few days, gave futures a strong tone, al- I though the 00-cent level for July at tracted considerable 'selling. Crop reports! remain optimistic end the situation sug gests better supplies in tne near future. July at the close tonight was 23c higher than a year ago, while July corn was only I cents higher, it Is true that the oats I crop was snort or the previous year, but th3 relative difference would seem to dis- I count much that is bullish. Then. too. here is an old adtige in the trade that It does not prove profitable to bull the tail 1 end of a short crop. Leading futures ranged as follows: Last Sales. I.VIMI 7..-.1M) Am Beet Sug.
