Baptists Hear Good Roads Talk
J. 'C. Tibbits of the purchasing de
partment of the state highway com
mission, was the speaker last evening
at a meeting at the Highland Baptist
church In the interest of good roads.
The meeting was under the auspices
of the Highland church young men's
class. The bonding measure which
will be voted on at the coming elec
tion was thoroughly explained by
Mr. Tibbits, who showed that, if
passed, it will not increase taxation,
but will only make- available money
which is being paid in anyway Under
the automobile tax law. Road work,
without the passage of the measure,
he said, will practically have to
cease. Stereopticon views were shown
of Oregon's highway system by maps
and giving scenes along the various
state highways.

Reed Raises Standards. A depar
ture in educational requirements for
undergraduates at Reed college this
year is qualification examinations for
all juniors before they are allowed to
take up work as sen'ors. . Instead of
the usual "orals" given to seniors at
graduation the juniors received ques
tions yesterday which required three
hours of grind to answer. Confer
ences with instructors will be the
next step before a junior is allowed
to become a full-fledged senior. The
step is indicative of a tightening-up
of requirements which the war had
been instrumental in lowering.
Reed Gets Honor Place. Reed col
lege is one of seven colleges ia the
northwest to receive an accredited
place among the colleges of this
country from the American council
of education, whose purpose it is to
classify the standards and resources
of American colleges in order to
make recommendations to foreign in
stitutions accepting American stu
dents. Other accredited colleges in
the northwest are University of Ore
gon, University of Washington, Pa
cific college. Willamette, Washing'
ton State college and Whitman college.
Mayor Returns Todat. Mayor
Baker will return to Portland this
morning, according to information
received by his secretary, Hal M.
White, yesterday. The mayor has
been in San Francisco, first attend
ing the foreign trade congress and
later checking on numerous munic
ipal probliems and ' the manner in
which they are handled in San Fran
Cisco and the bay cities. Most fm
portant of these problems is garbage
disposal.
Scaler's Cabin Burned. Fire ue
stroyed the scaler's cabin on the
Oregon Lumber company timber tract
on the west fork of Hood River Mon
day and damaged about $650 worth of
property. Forest Supervisor Carl Neal
had been working with the scaler
burning brush. The flames, fanned by
a strong breeze, got from under con
trol and it was necessary for the
lumber company to send men to ex
tingutsh them.
Countt to But Crrr Bonds. In
vestment of surplus county funds in
municipal improvement bonds of the
city of Portland, paying 5 per cent,
was recommended by County Treas
urer Lewis to the county commis
sioners yesterday: He declared that
they were about tl.e best investment
presented and would be of mutual
benefit to city and county. The argu
ment won the entire approval of the
commissioners. .
Idaho Man Auto Victim. Joseph
Sorrow of Grangeville, Idaho, was
knocked down and injured by an auto
mobile driven by A. L Anderson, 660
South avenue, at the intersection of
Sixth and Washington streets yester
day morning. Sorrow suffered a
bruised left foot and a skinned hand.
He was treated at the Police Emerg
ency hospital.

RECTOR OPPOSES DELAY
MALICE IS CHARGE IX COURT

Extension Granted Until Jane 1 for
Filing Amended Complaint In
Morrison Case.
That the board of school trustees
of the Episcopal diocese of Oregon is
actuated, by malice In pressing
charges of fraud against Dr. A. A.
Morrison, rector of the Trinity Epis
copal church, and that the trial will
develop a complete exoneration of the
minister, was the declaration of Dan
J. Malarkey and E. B. Seabrook, at
torneys, in - contesting a requested
postponement of trial date before Pre
siding Circuit Judge McCourt yeeter
day.
The charges are serious, the honor
of Dr. Morrison is at stake, and the
plaintifs should not be permitted to
carry over their case to the fall term
of court, the attorneys argued. They
insisted that the only reason behind
the postponement asked by the plain
tiffs was the lack of a case.
W. T. Slater, the attorney who
appears for the plaintiffs since tne
withdrawal of Attorneys Piatt &
Piatt, counselors of record, made the
motion for continuance. The law
yers for Dr. Morrison declared that
the reason Attorneys Piatt & Piatt
withdrew was the discovery that their
side lacked all merit and that the
motive for demanding continuance
was to harass Dr. Morrison and to
give the plaintiffs time to prepare
other charges.
Attorney Slater said that his en
trance into the case at a late date
made him unwilling to go to trial
on the complaint drawn up by Piatt
& Piatt and that he needed more time
to prepare. He was given until June
to file the final amended com
plaint.

Portland Police Asked to Assist In
Search for Thieves.
The Portland police yesterday were
asked to assist in the search for the
thief or thieves who broke into three
business establishments in Gresham
Monday and made their getaway with
a large quantity of jewelry, money
and other articles of value.
The Gresham Drug- company - was
looted of four bottles of morphine
tablets, 100 tablets to the bottle; 65
fountain pens, 30 rings and various
other articles, including between $3
and $4 in change.
The Hessel's Farm Machinery & Sup
ply company and the F. W. Howard
pool hall were also broken Into and
a quantity of small change taken
from each.
A man eeen in the vicinity was
described as 30 years old, 5- feet 9
Inches tall, weighing 175 pounds, dark
complexioned and well dressed.

There are resources ready for 'further development
in Oregon as soon as better roads are constructed.
The dairy products in outlying districts require better
transportation facilities.
The tourist interest is based on good roads, as most
travelers visit the scenic attractions by auto.
Better roads stimulate farmers . to the production of
larger crops, since they are brought closer to the
markets.
The proposed constitutional amendment, raising the bonding limit from
two to four per cent, to be voted on May 21, will bring about a good high
way system now, instead of an indefinite delay until roads can be built
from the prp11 annual receipts of automobile license fees and gasoline tax.
The measure means on increase in taxation, the present funds collected
from fees and tax being sufficient to pay interest and retire all bonds that
may be issued under the proposed amendment to the law; this would make
$20,000,000 available, whereas now all the funds authorized under the
present law are exhausted, as they have been paid out, or are contracted
to be paicL
