THE UTOIITXG OTCEGOHTXK, SATTJTXDAY, MAY 15. 1020 1 I PROOF OF CHARGES ASKED OF MICKLE S Produce Men Address Open Letter to Commissioner. ABUSE DECLARED BORNE Merchants Demand Retraction of Allegation of Dishonesty Said to UaTC Been Made Publicly. . An open letter has been addressed to 3. IX Mickle, Oregon dairy and food commissioner, by O. H. Lehman, sec retary of the Portland Produce Credit association, calling on the commis sioner to confirm or repudiate cer tain remarks ho mad at a recent meeting- of the State Taxpayers' league, to which the produce men take exception. Mr. Mickle Is asked to give the names of all Front-street firms that he is said to have declared were dis honest. The members of the Credit association are Page & Son. Bell & Co.. Mark Levy & Co., Levy & Spiegl. Ryan Fruit company. Pacific Fruit Produce company. Bo Ham & Co., W. B. Glafke company, Ben Levy & Co., A. Lima. Sheridan-Beckley com pany, IS. V. Willey and Marvin & Co. The letter issued by Mr. Lehman follows: Merchants Alleged Dibonet. "You are quoted recently in the various newspapers of the city as making a statement at a conference of the State Taxpayers' league held In the Chamber of Commerce Satur day, May 8, to the effect that Front street merchants were dishonest and that it was time to drive them out of business. "As wholesale produce dealers and as independent business men of long standing in this city, we ask that you either affirm or deny such state ments. '"In the event that you do not deny such statements, we, as prominent business men of this city, taxpayers and in some instances pioneers of the state of Oregon, aak. desire and, in fact, demand that you give to the same newspapers of this city and state the names of all such firms that you class as dishonest, or false to their trust as handlers and dis tributors of the products of the farmer. "We demand not only that such firm names be made public with all dispatch to protect the farmers of Oregon and the northwest against fraudulent dealing, but we demand that the names be made public to pro tect also the wholesale produce deal ers who are trying to earn an honest living. Proof Is Demanded. "As distributors of perishable -food products we have patiently borne the abuse of many aspirants for public office by the farmers' vote, who by such scurrility hoped to be carried into office sought. Now, prove the charges or make retraction through the press. "We have no quarrel whatever with your office or any other, but are weary of aspersions flung at us that would rot be tolerated by any other business interests in the country. "The laws are ample for . the pro tection of any farmer who feel3 he is not cretting a square deal, and we would welcome the invocation of sach laws at any time. The laws of Ore gon make for partnership of pro ducer and distributor, but primarily for the protection of the farmer. "We feel that statements you are alleged to have made are detrimental to business in general unless proven. therefore await your reply in a like public manner." HOW TO VOTE" COMPILED Cily Club Prepares Recommenda tions for Members. impartial recommendations pre pared by the City club as to voting on the ballot for the coming pri Ti-.aries are to be compiled in a pamph let to be distributed among the mem bers of the organization. A synopsis of these -was given yesterday at the regular luncheon at the Benson by Albert Kidgway. Two new committees were appoint ed by President Rankin. Walter Stearns heads the one on public af fairs made up of M. M. Matthlesen. V. P. Tebbetts, C. L. Booth and George Kebec, and L D. Bosley is chairman of the membership group composed of Frederick S. Cook, Ralph K. Doty, Sidney E. Woodbury and Kills R. Hawkins. The principal speaker yesterday was Dr. John H. Boyd, formerly of the First Presbyterian church. nheDiikeof Chimneyfiutte G.W.06et WITH his old -fashioned safety bicycle a "long horn steer on wheels, they called it he looked like a ten derfoot for sure.
