assisted by C. K. Warner and Trudel
Warner, spent last Saturday running
a line from the new x-arch mountain
trail from a point back of Angels
llest through brush and across the
Hast Fork of Bridal Veil creek to the
Northwest ridge, where the Trails
club has already done considerable
work in preparing the route for
travel. A satisfactory line was sur
veyed by .Mr. Cleator and the Trails
club will work on this section of the
trail as well as the upper slopes of
the mountain on its trip of -May 2i

Heed Veoplk Take Ovtinc. "No
body home" will bo a sign hung up
at the liccd coIIokc dormitories and
arts building this afternoon, when
the whole community takes a half
day's outing at Oswego lake, boat
ing, swimming and hiking. Stay-at-homes
will be confronted by a closed
commons at the Ueed dormitory, but
heaps of food will be carried to the
Oswego picnic grounds. The half
holiday takes the place of a spring
campus day, which had been post
poned because of rain. Kirk Prindle,
Tom Brock way and .Miss Harrington
of the Reed commons are making ar
rangements for the trip. ,
Big Clock Takes Tumble. "Time"
took a sudden spurt in the Reed col
lege office yesterday, when "Big
Ben," the electric clock, got loose
1 from its moorings and fell with a
crash to the desk below, narrowly
missing Miss Calista Kliot. office as
sistant. The timepiece was speedily
righted and was ready to give the
warning bell for the next period. This
is the second mishap in the Reed
office in two weeks. A few days ago
a chemistry student left a faucet
turned on and as a result the office
floor was under water the next morn
ing. I

Trails club luncheon today at the
Washington Hazelwood, special con
sideration will be given to the his
tory and the geographical import
ance of I.arch mountain. The speaker
of the day. C. K. Warner, will talk
for ten minutes a"nd general discus
sion will be invited on the import
ance of Larch mountain to the city of
Portland and the country between
here and Mount Mood. A brief report
will also be made concerning the
recent survey of the new trail from
Angels Rest to Larch Summit.
"Y" Announces Hioh Jinks. The
mcmbcrsMp committee of the Y. M.
C. A. is planning to hold a big
"jinks" in the association auditorium,
Saturday. May 15, to inaugurate the
launching of a "summer special"
membership campaign. The "Y" tri
angle orchestra of ten pieces will play
special selections beginning 7:30 P. M.
Wrestling bouts under the direction
1 of Ray Lesher, wrestling instructor,
boxing bouts and special stunts in the
swimming tank will be some of the
features. Refreshments will be served.
The meeting is public.
Contempt Hearino Postponed. The
hearing of John Saltalamachia, who
is accused of contempt of court be
cause, after being ordered by Judge
Tucker to stay away from his wife, he
is said to have attacked and badly cut
her with a knife, was postponed until
this morning as he wished to produce
witnesses in his behalf. He may be
bound over to the grand jury on an
assault charge also growing out of
the attack.
Damages of $300 Awarded. Dam
ages of $300 were awarded Mrs. Julia
A. Arndt of Milwaukie who asked
$0200, by a jury in the court of Cir
cuit Judge Tucker yesterday in her
suit against the Portland and Oregon
City railroad. She was injured when
a car ran off the track and ' over
turned near Rusk station last Octo
ber.

R. M. Pratt Lecture Tonight.
Kobert Murray Pratt will deliver hi
fourth lecture entitled "The Moral
Center of the Universe" in the Y. M
C. A. auditorium tonight at 8 o'clock.
The lecture is one of a series of sub
jects on "The Religion of Sensible
Men." Henry J. Dirkson, bass soloist,

Bribe Offer Charged. After Mike
Sirich was arrested by Lieutenant
Ervin on a charge of speeding on Mil
waukie avenue yesterday he offered
the arresting officer $5 to let him go.
according to a report made by the
lieutenant. An additional charge of
bribery was filed against him. His
I bail was placed at $100 on each charge
and he will have a hearing In the
municipal court today. Records at
the police station showed that Sirtch
had five automobile accidents since
September. 1, 1919. When arrested he
was said to have .tried to conceal his
identity by giving the name of Mike
Sich.
Autoist Is Arrested. E. E. Thomp
son, 799 Union aventfe, was arrested
on a charge of reckless driving by
Patrolman Freiberg of the traffic
bureau yesterday after he drove his
automobile into a horse ridden by
Russell Henry, 344 Front street,
knocking down the animal and break
ing its leg. The horse was later shot.
According to Patrolman Freiberg the
automobile driver tried to pass the
horse at the intersection at Fourth
and Taylor streets. The machine was
I said to have been driven 125 feet be
fore stopping, following the accident.
Break-Down Halts Traffic. Traf
fic at Twenty-third and Washington
streets was held up for about three
quarters of an hour esterday when
a rear wheel of a two-horse moving
truck driven by .lames Turpin. 472
West Emerson street, gave way and
spilled a heavy load of furniture into
the street. Household furniture, in
cluding a piano, cluttered up the
street-car track and the right of way
until they could be removed. Pa
trolman Fr.eiberg of the traffic bureau
reported that the truck wheel had
caught In the car track and had col
lapsed. Kennedt Hearing Postponed.
Hearing on the petition of Mrs. Laura
Kennedy for a writ of review of the
act of the city civil service commis
sion in discharging her from a posi
tion as chief clerk in the office of
the commission, was postponed by
Presiding Circuit Judge McCourt yes
terday owing to the failure of a city
attorney's official to appear. Deputy
City Attorney Toinlinson had notified
Attorney Wilson T. Hume, counsel for
the woman, that he would move to
quash the order, but was not in court.
Judge Ale-Court fixed a new hearing
for June 7.
Hoover Supportf.rs to Afpear.
Supporters of Herbert Hoover for
president will be on hand at the meet-
ng of the Roosevelt Republican club
Saturday noon. Delegations backing
the other leading republican candi
dates for the presidency have been
guests of the Roosevelt club and each
n turn has made attempt to outdo
he other in providing entertainment.
The address of the luncheon will be
made by Arthur C. Spencer, general
attorney for the O.-W. R. & N. rail
road, and I. Walter Glllard will pre
side as chairman.
Familt Quarrel Settled. To avoid
the appointment of a receiver for a
ittle grocery store at 326 East Six
tieth street as the result of a family
misunderstanding, a stipulation was
entered into yesterday between Mrs.
Jessie M. Caderette, daughter, and
Albert and Rosa Gee, parents, by the
terms of which the parents deed to
the daughter all claim to the real
estate and the daughter gives them
the use of the store premises and ad
joining living rooms for one year and
her interest in the grocery business.
Government Sues Lumber Compant.
Because a forest fire on the prop
erty of the Stanley-Smith Lumber
company destroyed government tim
ber. United States Attorney Hum
phreys will file suit against the lum
ber concern. Authority to start such
proceeding was received by him
yesterday from Attorney-General
Palmer. The government will seek
to recover $3016. This is said to be
the first suit of its kind ever filed
in Oregon.

Employes to Save Light. Employes
of the Portland Gas & Coke company,
through arrangement effected by the
company officials, are to get a half
hour of daylight saving every dav
this summer. Announcement was
made yesterday that, beginning next
Monday, May 17. the employes of all
departments will go to work at 8
A. M. and will end their day at 5 P. M.
The working hours at present are
8:30 to 5:30.
Liquor Seller Fined $400. John
Friede. 1391 Caruthers street, was
fined $400 yesterday by Federal Judge
Bean after he had pleaded guilty to
an indictment charging him with a
violation of the federal prohibition

Long Litigation Is Closed "With Sale
of Estate Parcels at Court
house by Referee.
After IS years of litigation over the
estate of H. D. Winters, in which 176
persons at one time claimed a share,
parcels of property remaining were
sold for $20,776 at the court house
yesterday by Bradley A Ewers, at
torney and referee of the estate,
which at first appraisal had been
worth around $60,000.
Attempts of Will E. Purdy to estab
lish a claim to the property through
the means of an instrument declared
by Circuit Judge McGinn to be a for
gery attracted much attention in the
litigation involving the property. The
contest of Purdy was carried to the
supreme court without avail, the
courts ruling that he had established
no legal claim.
The state of Oregon attempted,
without success to have the property
escheat to the state. There were
originally 128 contestants for the
property, of whom 60 were adjudged
possible heirs because of established
relationship. In actions begun by
these and other claimants there de
veloped finally 176 defendants with
cla!ms. The final order of the court
named 11 first cousins of Winter as
heirs-at-law. Three of these cousins
died during the litigation before their
rights were determined.
The chief property item in yester
day's sale was at Grand avenue near
East Davis street, sold to the Estates
company for $15,000.

tricts. Bond buyers and contractors
are filing bids with the district board
at tonight's meeting.
GRAIN EXPERT IS ASKED
Portland .Notified to Make Choice
to Sit on National Committee.
Portland has been asked to fur
nish a grain expert to sit upon a
national committee to consider pres
ent problems connected with the
country's grain market. Notification
vas received yesterday at the cham
ber of commerce in a telegram from
Frederick B. Wells, chairman of the
chamber of commerce at Minneapolis.
The message explains the situation,
as follows:
The conference of grain milling and al
lied Interests held in Chicago on May 7
provided for the formation of a general
committee to copsider all problems hav
ing bearing upon grain markets other
than those connected with future trad
ing. You are requested immediately to
designate a member of your exchange to
serve on the committee. Prompt action
in imperative, aa early organization of
the committee is urgent in view of con
sideration of transportation problems con
fronting us.
As men prominently connected with
the grain corporation were out of
the city yesterday, no-indication was
made as to the choice of a representa
tive.

Husband in Divorce Suit.
The "ordinary expressions'" of Mrs.
Grace L. Brewer about the home were
decidedly profane, according to the
divorce complaint of C. R. Brewer
filed in the circuit court yesterday.
"You little devils ran get along
the best way you can." was a remark
she would make to their children, said
the husband, who insisted that she
neglected their boys considerably. The
Brewers were married in In., 1 in 1902
and had one son. 15. and twj adopted
sons, 11 and 13 years old.
Xora Ridgway, who wa? married
to H. A. Ridgeway December 21. 1919.
has left her husband to keep house for
another man in Spokane, according to
a divorce suit instituted yesterday.
John David McCoy was only 23
when he married Florence May Mc
Coy, aged 16. on May 11, 1919, and
was unable to support her. she
averred in a cross-complaint filed yes
terday to his divorce suit. She de
clared they went to the home of her
mother to live and that her husband
was unable to pay rent or board.
A. J. IeCuyer filed suit for divorce
from Mabel M. LeCuyer yesterday, al
leging desertion.

municipal court yesterday with the
result that Judge Rossman declared
the salesman guilty. The judge an
nounced that he would impose penalty
on Richardson Thursday.
The judge said that he thought the
driver should have exercised more
care in driving past the standing
street car. especially when there
v. ere people in the street, but that
he was not yet ready to pass judg
ment. Miss Thibault. who suffered concus
sion of the brain, was reported to be
improved slightly at the St. Vincent's
hospital yesterday.

Raymond Robbins Says Nations of
Europe Thinking Socialism.
America was held up as the only
nation in the world whose institu
tions are on a sound enough basis
to minister to the wrongs of Russia
and save the world, in an address
by Raymond Robbins before the stu
dents of the Oregon institute of
technology at the Y. M. C. A. yes
terday morning.
Mr. Robbins declared that the great
nations of Europe are thinking so
clalistically today and that they are
trying to undermine and change the
present institutions of government.
"The only way that we can combat
the wrong ideas, the bolshevism and
sovietism of Russia is to combat it
with the right ideas," he declared.
OPENING CONTEST HELD

An old-fashioned "spelling bee" in
nearly every elementary schol in the
city of Portland, was the somewhat
unusual attraction which drew thou
sands of Portland residents to the
school houses of their districts last
night. Fathers, mothers, fond aunt
ies and interested friends crowded the
auditoriums of the various buildings
intent on witnessing the "spellin
down" of the pupils. The match for
good spellers was the main attrac
tion, hundreds of children competing.
The winners in the preliminaries
will meet Friday evening in the five
high schools. Lincoln, Jefferson,
Warhin-ton. franklin and St. Johns
for thv semi-finals. Wednesday even
ing rjY next week the final contest
will ho held at the auditorium, the
pupil-winners meeting representa
tives cr the Women of Woodcraft at

H. Whitney., assistant superintendent
of schools is in charge of the gigantic
spelling bee.
In addition to the spelling contest
last night at each school a pro
gramme of songs, dances and literary
numbers was presented to an appre
ciative audience. Arguments in favor
of the 2-mill tax measure for the sup
port and maintenance of the ele
mentary schools were presented 'by
well-known speakers at the various
schools.
PRIEST COMING TO CITY
Father J. A. Moran Transferred
From Eugene to Portland.
ECGEXE, Or.. May 11. (Special.)
Father J. A. Moran,. who has been
pastor of St. Mary's Catholic church
for the past eight years, announced
Sunday that he has been called to St.
Charles church in Portland. Sun
day's services were his last here as
regular pastor.
Father Moran came to the Eugene
church as his first pastorate after
entering the priesthood. He served
as chaplain for the Knights of Co
lumbus in France during the war.
Father Arthur Lane of Albany, it
is announced, will fill the local pulpit
temporarily at least.
