It was a. family affair with G.St.
Standifer, Portland shipbuilder, and
Mrs. G. 51. Standifer when speeding
cases were taken up by Judge Rosa
man In the municipal court yesterday
morning. Kach was assessed a fine
of $20 on a charge of speeding.
The two were arrested by G. S.
Smith, Portland real estate man, who
carries a deputy constable's star. Mr.
Smith arrested Mr. Standifer last
Tuesday on East Sixteenth street. He
reported that the shipbuilder was
passing everybody on the street at
the time.
On the following day the real es
tate man arrested Mrs. Standifer on
Milwaukie avenue. Mr. Standifer
pleaded guilty to the charge of speed
ing, his attorney appearing for him.
Mrs. Standifer, who appeared in per
son, pleaded not guilty.
Speeder Goru to Jail.
"It seems that every time I step
R my motorcycle's tail there is an
officer there to arrest me," declared
V. R. King, who appeared in munic
ipal court following his arrest by
Motorcycle Patrolman Kelly. King,
who had been arrested two times
previous on speeding charge, was
driving 42 miles an hour down Union
venue.
He was fined $25 and sentenced to
one day in jail.
Casper Dahler, who was arrested

ing 41 miles an hour on Portland
boulevard, pleaded guilty to the
charge of speeding. He was fined $38.
H. Courtney chose to assume a

peared before Judge Rossman,
charged with speeding, and the result
was that the Judge took his motor

Streetcar Is Paused.
W. J. Pettit answered to two
charges, that of passing a streetcar
while taking on passengers and of
speeding, and was fined on both
charges. ' He was arrested by Motor
cycle Patrolman Anderson after he
is said to have passed a streetcar at
Twenty-third and Thurman streets.
He was fined $15 for speeding and an
additional $10 for passing the street
car. L. O. Haro, who was arrested by
Police Lieutenant Ervin driving 28
miles an hour on Union avenue, was
fined $25.
Other traffic fines levied follow:
John Groeger, speeding, $5; R. G.
Harris, speeding, $5; O. 13. Collins,
speeding. $15; and F. C. Bartholomew,
failing to give right of way, $5.

relation to certificates of health
would aid materially in cleansing
the coming . generations, was the
statement made by Bishop Walter
Taylor Sumner in an address before
the Salem Rotatory club here today.
Hia topic was "The Care of the Boy."
Bishop Sumner especially referred to
the need of an Intermediate institu
tion in Oregon in order that boys
convicted of crimes might not be com
celled to associate with vicious
criminals.
John W. Todd, superintendent of
the Salem schools, was elected presi
dent of the club. H. S. Gile wa named
vice-president. Other officers are W.
I. Staley, secretary; William Walton,
treasurer, and J. C. Perry, master-at
arms.
Sawmill Owner Had Liquor.
KELSO, Wash., May 6. (Special.)
Charles Ross, formerly superin
tendent of the Kalama Lumber &
Shingle company sawmill at Kalama
now owner of a sawmill at Dallas,
Or., pleaded guilty to a charge of hav
ing liquor in his possession and was
fined $122 and costs. Koss and four
others were arrested more than
year ago after having secured liquor
from a vessel at the Kalama mill
dock.
Water Enough for Irrigation.
YAKIMA, Wash., May 6. (Special.)
Officials of the reclamation serv
ice say there will be no shortage in
the supply of irrigation water in
the Takima valley this season if
carefully used. The recent cool
weather conserved the supply and
counteracted the fact that the snow
fall in the mountains last winter was
smaller than for many years.
Kelso Girl Rescued by Brother.
KELSO. Wash., May 6. (Special.)
-Myrtle, 6-year-old daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. C. A. Young, fell 15 feet
from a pile of lumber at the C. A
Taylor mill into a small pond of
water. Her 9-year-old brother Ever
ett, attracted by the screams of the
little girl's companions, saved his
ister from drowning.
